Whether you’re planning a large donation or a smaller one, choosing your charity with care ensures your money supports a worthy cause and stretches as far as possible. This list isn’t in any specific order; these are all remarkable charities dedicated to benefiting others for years to come. Let’s dive in!

10 Acadia Center

Acadia National Park

Our first spotlight shines on an organization rooted in Maine, with additional offices in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Named after the famed national park, the Acadia Center dedicates itself to research, advocacy, and strategic planning to combat climate change.

According to their mission, this organization “Forms strategic alliances and engages all stakeholders—legislators, business and community leaders, advocacy and environmental justice groups—to press for next-generation solutions and ensure long-term results.”

The Acadia Center’s key objectives include:

  • Transitioning from gasoline-powered cars to electric vehicles.
  • Championing policies that protect our environment.
  • Advocating for a shift toward renewable energy sources.

They’ve also set a clear, ambitious target: for the Northeast United States to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least half by the year 2030.

9 Puppies Behind Bars

'Puppies Behind Bars' program gives inmates, dogs a new leash on life

Who can resist puppies? The Puppies Behind Bars charity offers help in multiple ways, but its adorable name perfectly captures its core mission. This unique program trains prison inmates to raise dogs for crucial roles:

  1. Service dogs for wounded veterans and first responders.
  2. Explosive detection dogs for law enforcement agencies.
  3. Therapy dogs for police departments, offering comfort and support.

Inmates receive an eight-week-old puppy to train in basic skills and commands. When the pup reaches 24 months, it returns to Puppies Behind Bars for more specialized training before being placed with its permanent handler.

This program offers inmates a chance to learn valuable skills, like providing love and care, and to contribute positively to their communities. The ultimate benefit, of course, lies in the incredible services these trained dogs provide to their handlers. If you’re passionate about dogs and their ability to help others, Puppies Behind Bars is a wonderful organization to support.

8 Charity: Water

The Spring - The charity: water story

Just as its name suggests, this charity is dedicated to bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. Its founder, Scott Harrison, transitioned from being a nightclub promoter to establishing this non-profit after a profound experience near Liberia, where he witnessed the devastating impact of contaminated water.

Since Charity: Water began its mission in 2006, they have funded over 90,000 water projects, benefiting more than 14 million people across 29 countries. What’s particularly refreshing is their transparency about how donations are used and the tangible achievements made possible through this generosity.

7 To Write Love on Her Arms

Mission - To Write Love on Her Arms

Our next charity addresses an issue that touches nearly everyone in some way: mental health. Over the past decade, mental health awareness has grown significantly, and many stigmas have thankfully diminished. To Write Love on Her Arms is a charity focused on these vital mental health goals.

Their website clearly states their aim: to find help and present hope to individuals struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and thoughts of suicide. Founded in 2007 by Jamie Tworkowski, the organization was named after a story he wrote on MySpace about a friend battling mental illness. From these humble beginnings, To Write Love on Her Arms has contributed over $2.5 million towards treatment and recovery for those facing mental illness, depression, addiction, and self-harm.

While their work is incredibly impressive, the need continues. Mental health challenges affect many people daily, and this outstanding organization is committed to continuing its crucial efforts.

6 FSHD Society

FSHD Together We Can

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, “Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is a rare genetic muscle disease that affects the muscles of your child’s face, shoulders, upper arms, and lower legs. These muscles weaken and shrink (atrophy).” Sadly, there is currently no cure for this condition.

However, the FSHD Society provides a beacon of hope for patients and their families. Founded in 1991 by two individuals with FSHD, Steve Jacobsen and Daniel Perez, this charity has grown substantially, investing over $10 million into research to understand the causes of FSHD.

The FSHD Society’s website outlines four primary goals:

  1. To understand and solve the biological disease process.
  2. To build infrastructure that accelerates research efforts.
  3. To improve patient care across the nation.
  4. To expedite the development of effective treatments.

The FSHD Society has achieved a great deal since 1991. Yet, with no cure currently available, this organization continues to need support and greater awareness for its vital work.

5 India Development and Relief Fund (IDRF)

Next on our list is a charity based in North Bethesda, Maryland, but its focus extends to India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. The India Development and Relief Fund (IDRF) champions national empowerment in these regions. As they state, “Our method puts power, not charity, in the hands of the poor.”

Charitable efforts often achieve greater impact when they are supported and managed locally, an idea that IDRF fully embraces. In Sri Lanka, Nepal, and India, IDRF tackles numerous issues, including poverty, lack of Westernized education, and inadequate infrastructure. This remarkable organization has earned several awards for its transparency and accountability.

4 Pencils of Promise

I PROMISE YOU Trailer

Pencils of Promise is an impactful organization with a truly inspiring origin story. Its founder, Adam Braun, once asked a young boy in India what he wanted most in the world. The boy’s answer was simple: a pencil. This heartfelt desire inspired Braun to dedicate his life to providing education and essential school supplies to those in need.

Since its inception, Pencils of Promise has supported teachers, training more than 3,000 educators globally. Moreover, they have helped build or improve schools in underprivileged areas, understanding that a clean and conducive learning environment is vital for students to thrive.

Across Laos, Ghana, Nicaragua, and Guatemala, over 100,000 students are currently enrolled in their programs. From a single pencil to supporting countless teachers and students, Pencils of Promise, despite its modest beginnings, has made an enormous impact.

3 Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW)

Many environmental charities exist today, often backed by significant funding. However, the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW) stands out due to its unique focus on law. With members spanning 80 countries, this organization is truly global in its reach.

Founded in 1989, ELAW is one of the longest-running organizations on our list. It pursues its goals by leveraging the expertise of advocates, including scientists and environmental lawyers. ELAW involves over 300 advocates, thirteen of whom have received the prestigious Goldman Prize for grassroots environmentalists, an award dating back to 1990.

2 Oxfam International

Another international powerhouse, Oxfam International, comprises a confederation of 17 organizations. These groups collaborate with local communities in over 90 countries around the globe. Oxfam has consistently demonstrated a commitment to grassroots organizations working to alleviate poverty.

Oxfam helps raise awareness, provides crucial support, and responds effectively to crises. Beyond poverty, Oxfam International aims to tackle a wide range of pressing global issues. With such a broad scope, it’s no surprise that Oxfam International has been helping people since World War II. As their website states, “We believe in equality. That’s it. Plain and simple.” This is a powerful message we can all support.

1 National Pediatric Cancer Foundation

About the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation

The National Pediatric Cancer Foundation was established in 1991 by two courageous mothers, Melissa Helms and Risa Tramel. They met in Florida under difficult circumstances: both their infant daughters were undergoing cancer treatment. Thankfully, both girls recovered, but their shared experience highlighted the urgent need to fight pediatric cancer. This led them to form the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation.

Years later, in 2005, they launched Project Sunshine, a program designed to identify leading doctors and researchers to expedite the discovery of a cure for pediatric cancer. Since Project Sunshine began, they have dedicated over $30 million to pediatric cancer research and have funded four clinical trials. This represents a monumental impact for a charity that started with two mothers facing a crisis together.

These ten charities, though perhaps not always in the global spotlight, demonstrate that dedication, focused missions, and passionate individuals can create waves of positive change across the world. Their work touches lives, protects our planet, and offers hope where it’s needed most.
