Lost & Found: 10 Rare Historical Discoveries

History is full of surprises, and nothing excites history buffs more than uncovering something that hasn’t been seen for centuries. Recent times have been full of amazing “lost and found” moments, with discoveries popping up in excavation sites, libraries, and even unexpected places like forests and apartment buildings. Let’s dive into some of the coolest hidden rarities that have been rediscovered!

10. Picasso’s Lapdog

Guggenheim spots hidden dog behind paint layers in Picasso painting

Back in 1900, Pablo Picasso painted Le Moulin de la Galette, depicting dancing couples in a dance hall. But a closer look reveals a surprise: a ghostly image of a dog in the bottom left corner.

Originally, Picasso had painted a Cavalier King Charles spaniel in detail but then hastily painted over it, turning it into a discarded coat. However, the dog’s outline remained visible. Using X-ray fluorescence technology, researchers rediscovered the pigments Picasso used, revealing details like the breed and a red ribbon around its neck.

While some believe the dog would have enhanced the painting, others argue that its cuteness didn’t fit the dark atmosphere of the dance hall.

9. A Geometric Miracle

Mysterious tunnel discovered that may lead to Cleopatra’s tomb

In Taposiris Magna, Egypt, archaeologists have been searching for Cleopatra’s tomb for 18 years. In 2022, they discovered a hidden tunnel 43 feet (13 meters) underground.

This 6.5-foot (2-meter) tall and 4,281-foot (1,305-meter) long tunnel, carved from sandstone bedrock, has been called a “geometric miracle.” It’s similar to the Tunnel of Eupalinos in Greece. Though its purpose is unknown, it might have been used to funnel water. Researchers hope it could lead to Cleopatra’s tomb, as the temple where it was found was dedicated to Osiris and Isis, and Cleopatra associated herself with Isis.

8. A Rare Synagogue Mural

Vermont historians and art conservators continue reviving 19th century mural

In 1910, Ben Zion Black painted a stunning triptych of the Tent of the Tabernacles on a wall in a Burlington synagogue, Chai Adam. The mural covered 155 square feet (14 square meters).

When the synagogue closed in 1939, the building became a carpet store, warehouse, and later, an apartment block. Residents convinced the new owners to wall up the mural for preservation. However, after 30 years, the wall was torn down in 2012, revealing damage to the painting.

In 2022, after careful restoration, the 112-year-old mural was displayed at the Ohavi Zedek Synagogue. This Vermont mural is one of the few Jewish folk art murals to survive the Holocaust’s destruction of synagogue wall paintings.

7. Pompeii Earthquake Victims

Italy: Skeletons of Pompeii victims crushed to death by earthquake found

Pompeii is one of the most excavated ancient cities, yet new discoveries keep emerging. Recently, two more bodies were found in a block of buildings called the “Chaste Lovers.”

The skeletons belonged to two men, both in their fifties, who sought shelter during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Earthquakes shook the city during the eruption, and researchers believe a wall collapsed on them, killing them instantly. One man’s upraised arm suggests he tried to defend himself.

6. A Chamber Inside the Giza Pyramid

New discovery inside Great Pyramid of Giza reveals hidden secrets

In 2023, a new feature was discovered inside the Great Pyramid of Giza: a 30-foot (9-meter) long tunnel above the main entrance on the north side. The tunnel is 6 feet (1.8 meters) wide and has a chevron-shaped ceiling, matching the entrance below.

The corridor doesn’t seem to lead anywhere, and its purpose is unknown. The prevailing theory is that the builders included the space to distribute the weight of the masonry more evenly, preventing the pyramid’s collapse. The unfinished walls suggest it was an engineering hack, never meant to be seen.

5. The Stone of Destiny Anomalies

UK’s ancient Coronation Stone of Destiny has ‘strange markings’ and could be a fake

Scottish kings have sat on the Stone of Destiny during their coronations since the 13th century. Researchers scanning the stone recently found hidden symbols and anomalies.

The 800-year-old slab had mysterious markings resembling Roman numerals or crude crosses, possibly etched after the stone left Scotland in 1296. Remnants of plaster and a copper alloy stain were also found, suggesting a metal object, like a religious bell, stood on the stone for years. There’s no record of a cast being made of the rock or what the metal object might have been.

4. The Roots of British Comedy

In medieval England during the Wars of the Roses, one minstrel was making people laugh near the Derbyshire-Nottinghamshire border. Though his name is lost, researchers know he existed, which is rare. Actual accounts of medieval bards are extremely scarce.

In the 15th century, a fan named Richard Heege created a book based on the bard’s performance notes, known as the Heege Manuscript. Its comedic value was overlooked until Dr. James Wade rediscovered it at the National Library of Scotland.

The manuscript is a unique record of live comedy shows in medieval England, preserving the work of a brilliant minstrel. It echoes the slapstick, self-irony, and audience-poking humor characteristic of British stand-up comedy today.

3. Never Before Seen Bible Chapter

Historian Grigory Kessel discovered a hidden chapter of the Bible in an old Vatican manuscript. The book was a palimpsest, meaning it had been scrubbed and reused. Using ultraviolet light, Kessel found a chapter of the Bible unseen for over 1,500 years beneath three layers of text.

Written in Syriac, the text described Chapter 12 in the Book of Matthew and provided insight into the Bible’s textual evolution. The earliest phases of the Bible were slightly different from modern versions.

For example, the Syriac passage reads, “…began to pick the heads of grain, rub them in their hands, and eat them,” differing slightly from the common Greek version.

2. A Masterpiece in the Forest

Sotheby’s Spotlight: Simon Shaw on Edvard Munch’s Dance on the Beach

“Dance on the Beach,” painted in 1906 by Edvard Munch, was hidden to ensure its survival. In 1940, the Olson family of Norway, neighbors of Munch, hid the 13-foot (4-meter) long artwork in a barn in a Norwegian forest to protect it from the Nazis, who deemed Munch a “degenerate artist.”

The painting remained hidden throughout World War II. In March 2023, the 115-year-old masterpiece resurfaced and was sold for over $20 million at Sotheby’s auction.

1. A Legendary Lost City

Unearthed: Atlantis of the North Sea - The Lost City of Rungholt

According to German legend, Rungholt was a great city destroyed by a deadly storm after its sinful inhabitants mistreated a priest. Many doubted its existence, but in 2023, researchers found the submerged city in the Wadden Sea.

A geological survey revealed medieval mounds around the island of Südfall. Under the mudflats were the remains of a large church, drainage systems, a harbor, and a 700-year-old skull of a Rungholt resident.

Rediscovering these lost treasures reminds us of history’s depth and the stories waiting to be unearthed. From hidden paintings to lost cities, each find offers a unique glimpse into our past. What discovery excites you the most?
