SHARE

Alaska is a land of breathtaking beauty and raw wilderness. It boasts towering peaks, vast glaciers, and immense untamed expanses. But beneath this stunning surface lies a chilling enigma: the Alaska Triangle. This region, stretching between Utqiagvik, Anchorage, and Juneau, has become notorious for an alarming number of unexplained disappearances, far exceeding those of the Bermuda Triangle. Experts remain puzzled by the thousands who have vanished without a trace, amidst tales of Bigfoot, phantom planes, and strange energies. Today, we delve into ten of the most perplexing cases that contribute to the dark legend of the Alaska Triangle.

10 Richard Lyman Griffiths

Richard Lyman Griffiths was an inventor with a passion for survival. He created a special wilderness cocoon and was eager to see if it worked. In the summer of 2006, he headed into the wilds of southeast Alaska, likely to test his invention. Surprisingly, it took more than a year before anyone realized he was missing.

Investigations found that Richard had taken a bus to a spot along the Alaska Highway. He stayed at a lodge near the White River, leaving some gear behind. He told people he planned to camp in McCarthy, a small town near the vast St. Elias National Park. But once Richard ventured into the hills, he was never seen again. Many believe he was testing his cocoon, yet no one checked on him for months. To this day, neither Richard nor his cocoon has been found, adding his name to the long list of those lost in the Alaska Triangle.

9 Alan Foster

Alan Foster may not be a household name, but his unexplained vanishing places him among the many lost in the Alaska Triangle. On September 9, 2013, Alan was piloting his Piper PA-32-260 aircraft. He was flying over the Alaska Triangle when his plane went missing.

According to the National Transport Safety Board, Alan was flying by sight, following his flight plan. He refueled in Yakutat and took off around 3:30 p.m. He even radioed flight services in Juneau, saying he might stop in Cordova if needed. But just 18 minutes after takeoff, as he flew between Malaspina Glacier and the Gulf of Alaska, radar showed his plane dropping to 1,100 feet. Then, it vanished. Alan Foster was never heard from again. No trace of him or his aircraft has been found. What makes this case so strange is Alan’s experience. He had over 9,700 flight hours and was careful about flight details. He reported no trouble before disappearing into the notorious Alaska Triangle.

8 Frank Minano

Frank Minano was respected as an educator and mentor. He taught traditional ways of life, including hunting and subsistence living. On August 17, 2020, he was reported missing from Nenana, a small community in Alaska. His disappearance adds another name to the unsettling list of those lost in the Alaska Triangle.

Details about Frank’s vanishing are scarce. Police only know that he sought shelter in a cabin nearby on the day he went missing. Years have passed, and there’s still no sign of him. This lack of information is sadly common for many who disappear in this mysterious region, leaving behind only questions.

7 Leonard Lane

Leonard Lane was a 73-year-old veteran of World War II. His baffling disappearance occurred on the evening of July 4, 1995. After attending a parade in Fairbanks, Leonard went for a walk and simply vanished into the area known as the Alaska Triangle.

Witnesses who saw him shortly before he went missing mentioned he was limping. This was possibly due to injuries from his time in the war. Like so many other cases in the Alaska Triangle, authorities have found no clues about what happened to Leonard. Two years after he disappeared, in 1997, he was legally declared dead. His case, however, remains unsolved.

6 Thomas Anthony Nuzzi

Thomas Anthony Nuzzi was a traveling nurse who worked in various locations across Alaska. He had a good job and reliable transportation but didn’t have a permanent home address. This made tracking his movements difficult, especially back in 2001.

Thomas was staying at a Super 8 motel in Anchorage when he was reported missing. He failed to show up for his nursing shift in Bethel, which was just a short flight away. Investigators found that on the night before he vanished, Thomas bought cigarettes, a lighter, chips, and a soda from a gas station. He was reportedly with a woman at the time. Motel staff also mentioned seeing a different man in Nuzzi’s room on the night he disappeared. Although his bicycle and Jeep were later found, Thomas Nuzzi himself has never been seen since.

5 Shanna Oman

Shanna Oman’s disappearance is another puzzling case from the Alaska Triangle. On June 3, 2019, she vanished after leaving a friend’s house in Fairbanks, Alaska, around noon. Her friend dropped her off near the Nico River, close to Shanna’s home.

Once Shanna was out of sight, her friend assumed she had made it home safely. However, hours later, Shanna’s roommate called the friend. Shanna had never arrived. Authorities launched a search, but despite their efforts, Shanna was never found. What happened to her after she walked away from her friend remains a complete mystery, adding her to the list of the Alaska Triangle’s vanished.

6 Unsolved Mysteries That Cannot Be Explained Part 9

4 Paul Michael Lemaitre

Paul Michael Lemaitre, an experienced 65-year-old marathon runner, vanished during his first Mount Marathon Race. This challenging race, in its 85th year, requires runners to go up a densely forested mountain and cross creeks for about three and a half miles.

While the Mount Marathon Race is known for its difficulties, sudden disappearances are not common. Yet, this is exactly what happened to Lemaitre. A race steward was the last person to see him. The steward recalled Lemaitre moving towards the turnaround point, just 200 feet from the finish line. The weather was foggy, but the steward didn’t see any immediate danger for the runner. When asked for his bib number, Lemaitre responded “548,” showing he was still alert. That was the last contact anyone had with him. Extensive searches by mountain rescue teams, state troopers, and search dogs found nothing. Did the fog play a part in his disappearance within the Alaska Triangle? No one can say for sure.

3 Jael Tiara Hamblen

Jael Tiara Hamblen was last seen in the Trailside Loop area of South Anchorage, Alaska. She was reported missing on October 11, 2014. Her case seems to be a grim mix of possible foul play and the unexplained phenomena of the Alaska Triangle.

On the night she disappeared, Jael had dinner with her roommate, Kendra Vincent Estrada. It was around 10 p.m., and Kendra decided to sleep, but Jael wanted to go out again. Reports say Jael was upset that night due to relationship problems with an unnamed man. She texted another man, asking if he wanted to go out, and he apparently agreed. Tragedy unfolded when Kendra could no longer reach Jael by phone. It’s unknown what happened after Jael left with the man. Given this is the Alaska Triangle, the possibilities are unsettling. Her purse and vehicle were found later, but Jael herself has never been located.

2 1950 Douglas C-54D

On the morning of January 26, 1950, U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant Robert Espe said goodbye to his wife. He didn’t know it would be their last farewell. Robert and 43 other passengers boarded a Douglas C-54D Skymaster military transport plane, ready for a flight to Montana.

Normally, aircraft maintain constant radio contact with airport operators. However, this Skymaster went silent just moments after takeoff from Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage. Friends and family waiting for their arrival in Great Falls, Montana, received devastating news: the plane never made it. At that time, few disappearances in the Alaska Triangle had been widely reported. A massive search involving over 75 U.S. and Canadian aircraft scoured the region, but found nothing. Neither the plane nor the remains of its 44 occupants have ever been recovered.

1 The Disappearance of U.S. Reps. Nick Begich and Hale Boggs

The Alaska Triangle doesn’t discriminate; it has claimed even prominent figures. One of the most high-profile cases involves two powerful U.S. congressmen: Hale Boggs, the House Majority Leader from Louisiana, and Nick Begich, a freshman congressman from Alaska.

On October 16, 1972, Boggs and Begich, along with Begich’s aide Russell Brown and pilot Don Jonz, boarded a twin-engine Cessna 310. They were flying from Anchorage to Juneau for a campaign event. Their small plane vanished without a trace somewhere over the Chugach National Forest, well within the Alaska Triangle. The disappearance triggered one of the largest search and rescue operations in U.S. history. For 39 days, military aircraft, Coast Guard cutters, and civilian volunteers scoured a vast area. Despite the massive effort, no sign of the plane or its occupants was ever found. The mission was eventually called off, leaving the fate of these influential men an enduring mystery, widely attributed to the sinister reputation of the Alaska Triangle.

The DISAPPEARANCE OF HALE BOGGS & The Chilling Theories

The vast, untamed wilderness of Alaska holds both stunning beauty and chilling secrets. The stories of these ten disappearances offer just a glimpse into the unsettling mystery of the Alaska Triangle. From experienced pilots and seasoned adventurers to everyday people and even powerful politicians, no one seems immune to its enigmatic pull. Despite investigations, searches, and the passage of time, these cases remain cold, leaving families heartbroken and experts searching for answers. The Alaska Triangle continues to be a place where the line between the known world and the unexplained blurs, reminding us that some mysteries may remain forever unsolved.
