In 2011, Frank Stronach, the visionary behind the Stronach Group, sketched a dream of a monumental horse statue. Five years later, that dream became a stunning reality. The 100-foot-tall Pegasus and Dragon statue now stands proudly at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. This magnificent bronze sculpture, the largest horse statue globally, honors the incredible impact horses have had on our world. It powerfully depicts the mythical Pegasus triumphing over a fallen dragon, a project that took two years of dedicated work to complete.
9 Cristo Rei (Christ the King)
During much of World War II, Portugal managed to remain neutral, a decision that spared it from the widespread destruction seen elsewhere. This peaceful stance continued until 1944 when an American military base was set up in Santa Maria.
As a profound expression of gratitude for being spared the horrors of the war, the Cristo Rei statue was inaugurated in May 1959. Standing an impressive 360 feet tall, it has watched over the city of Lisbon ever since. The inspiration came years earlier when the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon visited the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil. The monumental arches supporting the hand-sculpted figure of Christ face the four cardinal directions, casting an illuminated vigil over the city each night.
8 Confucius of Mount Ni
Confucius is celebrated as one of China’s most important thinkers, the founder of Confucianism. He taught that leaders should set a moral example, guiding their people with ethical behavior. It’s a philosophy that has shaped Chinese culture for centuries.
Tradition holds that Confucius was born in a humble cave on Mount Ni, a hill located about 19 miles from Qufu in Shandong Province. According to ancient legends, his mother left him there for a short time, and he was miraculously cared for by a tiger and an eagle. Today, Mount Ni is home to a majestic 236-foot brass statue of Confucius, unveiled in 2018. As the largest Confucius statue in the world, it’s hoped this monument will help share and promote the richness of traditional Chinese culture with visitors from around the globe.
7 The Motherland Calls
Dominating the skyline of Volgograd, Russia, The Motherland Calls is an awe-inspiring sight. It’s not just Europe’s tallest statue, but also the tallest statue of a woman anywhere in the world, and the sword she wields is the largest of its kind. The sculpture portrays a powerful woman, her left arm outstretched, her right arm raising a mighty sword. She embodies the spirit of the Motherland, urging her children to never give up in battle and to defend their land until the very last enemy is defeated.
This colossal 279-foot statue was completed in 1967 to mark 25 years since the Battle of Stalingrad (modern-day Volgograd). This battle was one of history’s most brutal conflicts, claiming nearly 2 million lives. The city was rebuilt from ruins, and mass graves are scattered throughout the area. Near the statue lie the remains of Vasily Zaytsev, a famed Soviet sniper, and Ivanovich Chuikov, a Marshal of the Soviet Union.
6 African Renaissance Monument
In 2010, Senegal unveiled Africa’s tallest statue, the African Renaissance Monument, under then-president Abdoulaye Wade. This 160-foot bronze giant was intended as a powerful symbol of African freedom and a beacon to draw tourists. It officially celebrates the 50th anniversary of Senegal’s independence from France. The sculpture shows a strong man holding a small, unclothed child, his other arm around a woman in minimal attire.
However, the statue sparked considerable controversy. In a largely Muslim country, the idea of idolatry and the nudity depicted were met with criticism. Furthermore, the $27 million price tag caused outrage, especially since nearly half the population lived in poverty. Unfinished homes and piles of rubbish near the monument’s base highlighted these tensions. President Wade defended the cost by revealing a deal: a North Korean company built the statue in exchange for about 40 acres of valuable Senegalese land.
5 Garuda Wisnu Kencana
Back in 1990, Indonesian sculptor Nyoman Nuarta found inspiration for a grand statue: the Hindu deity Vishnu riding the mythical bird, Garuda. Construction began in Bali in 1997, but numerous delays meant the project wasn’t finished until 2018, with a final cost of around $100 million.
The copper and steel statue is truly remarkable. It soars to 246 feet, making it Indonesia’s tallest. Vishnu wears an intricate crown adorned with gold-plated mosaics, weighing a staggering 3.5 tons. Special lighting was designed to highlight the exquisite details of this incredible artwork. The myth that inspired the statue tells of Garuda’s quest for Amrita, the elixir of life. Garuda agreed to become Lord Vishnu’s divine mount in exchange for using the elixir to free his enslaved mother, a tale of devotion and sacrifice.
4 Sendai Daikannon
The Sendai Daikannon is a gigantic statue that watches over the city of Sendai in Japan’s Tohoku region. For a time, it held the title of the world’s tallest statue, and today it still ranks as the fifth tallest. This 328-foot sculpture beautifully represents a goddess of mercy, Kannon, holding a wishing gem in one hand and a water flask in the other, symbolizing compassion and wish-fulfillment.
Inside, visitors discover a fascinating world. The ground floor entrance features 33 statues of Kannon, each showing a different form the goddess can take. Opposite them are striking statues of demonic creatures, each one representing a month in the Chinese astrological calendar. An elevator whisks visitors to the top, and they can descend via a stairwell. Along the way, they pass 108 Buddhist statues, each representing a human emotion or desire. If a visitor wishes to overcome a negative emotion, they can find the corresponding statue, make a wish, and leave a small offering.
3 The Kelpies
Scottish legends tell of Kelpies, mystical water spirits that can change their shape. They are said to haunt rivers and streams, often appearing as beautiful horses or ponies to lure unsuspecting humans. But beware, these creatures are malevolent! If a person, especially a child, climbs onto a Kelpie’s back, they become magically stuck. The Kelpie then drags its victim into the water to devour them.
Despite their fearsome reputation in folklore, The Kelpies statues are a modern marvel. Unveiled in 2013 between Falkirk and Grangemouth, Scotland, these two magnificent 100-foot-tall horse heads became a public attraction in 2014, fittingly the Lunar Year of the Horse. They are the largest equine sculptures in the world and Scotland’s tallest art installation. The Kelpies serve as a dramatic gateway to the eastern entrance of the Forth and Clyde canal and stand as a powerful monument to Scotland’s rich horse-powered industrial heritage.
2 Peter the Great Statue
In Moscow, a towering 322-foot statue of Peter the Great stands watch, with the Russian czar depicted grandly atop a column of ships. It was erected in 1997 as a tribute to the leader who founded the Russian Navy. However, this colossal monument hasn’t quite won the hearts of Muscovites. Many locals consider it one of the ugliest statues in the world, an unwelcome blemish on their city’s landscape.
Adding to the statue’s troubled reputation is a persistent rumor: that it wasn’t originally meant to honor Peter the Great at all. The story goes that it was first designed as a tribute to Christopher Columbus to mark the 500th anniversary of his first voyage. When no buyers could be found for the Columbus version, some say it was quickly reworked to represent Peter the Great and the 300th anniversary of the Russian Navy. This doesn’t sit well, especially since Peter the Great famously disliked Moscow, even moving Russia’s capital to Saint Petersburg. Ironically, despite suggestions to move the statue there, Saint Petersburg doesn’t seem keen on adopting it either.
1 Statue of Unity
Reaching an astounding 597 feet into the sky, the Statue of Unity in Gujarat, India, proudly holds the title of the world’s tallest statue. This colossal monument depicts Indian statesman Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of independent India. He is highly respected for his crucial role in uniting the many princely states into a single Union of India.
More than just its height, the statue is an engineering marvel. It’s built to withstand powerful winds up to 110 miles per hour and earthquakes up to 6.5 on the Richter scale. Constructed in an impressive 33 months, it was inaugurated in 2018. Four high-speed lifts within its legs can take visitors to the viewing gallery near the top in just 30 seconds. Interestingly, much like the Statue of Liberty (though about four times taller!), the Statue of Unity is expected to gradually turn green over the next 100 years due to weathering of its bronze surface. However, the project wasn’t without its challenges; 185 families, including farming communities, had to be relocated to make way for the statue. Despite compensation with new land, protests did occur.
