Father’s Day is a special time. Families around the world honor dads. It’s a day for joy and making happy memories. We look forward to showing appreciation for the fathers and father figures in our lives. Many plan barbecues, outings, or quiet family dinners. The idea is to celebrate and create lasting, positive moments.
But sometimes, this day of celebration takes a dark turn. Instead of happiness, some families face unimaginable sadness. What should be a day filled with laughter and love can become a day marked by tragedy. These are the stories that remind us how quickly things can change. Get ready to read about ten times Father’s Day became a day of deep sorrow, forever changing lives.
10. “Float Don’t Fight”
Father’s Day in 2018 turned into a nightmare for the Joy family. Austin and Ali Joy were enjoying a weekend getaway at Atlantic Beach with their twin daughters. While swimming, a dangerous rip current suddenly pulled the young girls farther out. Austin and Ali immediately swam after their daughters, but they too got caught in the powerful current.
Several Marines surfing nearby saw the family struggling. They couldn’t reach them quickly, so they shouted instructions to “float on their backs.” After what felt like an eternity, the Marines managed to bring Ali and the twins to shore. Tragically, Austin did not survive. He sacrificed his life to save his children. Since that terrible day, Ali has dedicated herself to preventing similar tragedies. She started the “Float Don’t Fight” campaign. Her goal is to teach others how to survive rip currents by conserving energy and floating, turning her family’s pain into a life-saving message.
9. Parking Spot Rage

A simple argument over a parking spot led to a Father’s Day murder in January 2018. William Fernandez, 33, had a dispute with David Hall about a parking space on a residential street. Hall was known in the neighborhood for getting angry about parking. Though they went their separate ways after the argument, Hall held onto his anger.
Five months later, on Father’s Day morning, June 17, their paths crossed again. Hall, 47, pulled out a gun and started shooting at Fernandez. Fernandez tried to run, but Hall chased him, continuing to fire. Even after being shot in the chest, Fernandez managed to run two blocks before he collapsed. He died just hours before he was supposed to celebrate Father’s Day with his four children, who had made him gifts. Hall was on the run for three weeks before being caught. In February 2020, he was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 20 years to life in prison.
8. Cheesecake Tragedy
In June 2019, a five-year-old boy’s life was tragically cut short over a piece of cheesecake. Milwaukee police were called to a home where they found the child unresponsive. His father, Travis Stackhouse, had just come home from a night out drinking. Stackhouse first told police his son had fallen down the stairs. However, the boy’s six-year-old brother told officers a different story. He said their father had hit his brother hours earlier.
The medical examiner found that the child had suffered severe internal injuries, including a torn adrenal gland and a ruptured stomach, due to blunt force trauma. Stackhouse eventually confessed to punching his son. He said he became angry after finding out the boy had eaten a slice of cheesecake he had received for Father’s Day. Stackhouse pleaded guilty to second-degree homicide, child abuse, and child neglect. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
7. A Final Father-Son Outing

For Father’s Day in 2006, Brian Calhoun wanted one thing: to spend the whole day with his dad, William. They had a wonderful afternoon, going to the movies and then out for dinner. After returning to their Long Island home, tragedy struck. As William, 59, was resting on the sofa watching TV, a car suddenly crashed into their living room.
Brian, 25, desperately searched through the debris and found his father pinned between the couch and the kitchen wall. Brian knew his father was dying. He knelt beside him, told him how much he loved him, and promised to take care of his younger brother. He kissed his father’s forehead, and then William was gone. The driver, 28-year-old Richard Mair, was fleeing from police at high speed after a drug deal. Mair was found guilty of DWI and causing a death while fleeing police. He was sentenced to 7 to 14 years in prison. William, a Vietnam veteran, had been planning to retire in just six months.
6. Savage Butchery
On Father’s Day 2018, a peaceful Utah neighborhood was shattered by unimaginable violence. Police responded to a 911 call and arrived to a horrific scene. Frantic neighbors stood helpless as screams came from a nearby home. Inside, 44-year-old Abe Martinez, recently paroled from federal prison, was holding his grandparents hostage with a knife.
Officers reported that Martinez seemed to have some kind of “score to settle” with his elderly grandparents. During the standoff, Martinez brutally attacked his grandmother, Rose, before turning on his grandfather. SWAT officers, able to see the attack through a window, opened fire on Martinez. He was killed at the scene. Police then stormed the house. They found the 71-year-old grandfather alive but critically injured. Sadly, Rose Martinez, 89, was pronounced dead. The motive for this horrific Father’s Day slaughter remains unknown to authorities.
5. June 17, 2001: A Dark Day for Heroes
Just three months before the devastating attacks of 9/11, New York City mourned the loss of three brave firefighters. On Father’s Day, June 17, 2001, John Downing, 40, Brian Fahey, 46, and Harry Ford, 50, lost their lives. Two youths accidentally started a fire in a hardware store. The fire spread to the cellar, causing a massive, chemically-fueled explosion.
The blast was so powerful it threw firefighters into the street. Fiery rubble rained down, burying Ford and Downing alive. At the same horrifying moment, Fahey was pulled down from the first floor into the inferno of the cellar; he was never seen alive again. In an instant, eight children became fatherless on a day meant for celebrating their dads. Years later, firefighter Richie Schmidt, who had rushed to the scene while off-duty, reflected on that terrible day with an “empty feeling,” noting how many who were there also didn’t survive the events of September 11th.
4. Robert Farquharson’s Cruel Revenge
On Father’s Day, September 4, 2005, in Winchelsea, Australia, a day meant for family turned into a calculated act of evil. Robert Farquharson, 37, was spending the day with his three sons: Jai, 10; Tyler, 7; and Bailey, 2. Suddenly, their car veered off the road, crossed oncoming lanes, crashed through a fence, and plunged into a pond.
A passerby found Farquharson wet by the roadside. Farquharson claimed he blacked out from a coughing fit. Astonishingly, he refused to go back to the pond to help his children or even call the police. Instead, he went to his estranged wife Cindy Gambino’s home and told her, “I’ve had an accident. I couldn’t get the kids. They’re in the water. It’s too late.” The next day, divers recovered the boys’ bodies. Investigators grew suspicious of Farquharson’s behavior. A friend later testified that Farquharson, bitter about his wife moving on, had planned a watery “accident” on Father’s Day to make her “suffer for the rest of her life.” This chilling testimony led to Farquharson’s conviction and a life sentence in prison.
3. The Milperra Massacre
Father’s Day, September 2, 1984, in Milperra, Australia, turned into a bloody battleground. Rival biker gangs, the Bandidos and the Comancheros, confronted each other in the parking lot of the Viking Tavern during a family barbecue and market day. The scene quickly escalated from arguments to all-out war. Gang members used baseball bats, chains, and then guns began firing wildly.
Terrified bystanders, including families with children, scrambled for cover behind cars and walls. Tragically, a 14-year-old girl selling raffle tickets was caught in the crossfire and fatally shot in the head. In another gruesome incident, a biker’s arm was severed with a machete. Over 100 police officers, including tactical teams, were called to end the chaos. When the violence subsided, seven people were dead, and dozens were injured. The Father’s Day barbecue had become a massacre, leading to numerous arrests and a lengthy investigation with over 500 witnesses.
2. The Flynn Family’s Devastating Loss
David Logan, 48, had a history of drunk driving and posing a “great danger to others,” yet he had avoided serious consequences for years. On Father’s Day, June 21, 2020, his reckless behavior led to an unimaginable tragedy. While heavily intoxicated, Logan was speeding through Abbey Road at about 50mph. He lost control, jumped the curb, and crashed head-on into Josh Flynn, 37, and his children, Coby-Jay, 15, and Skylar, 12, who were out for a walk with their dog.
Josh, Coby-Jay, Skylar, and their beloved dog were all killed instantly at the scene. Witnesses reported that Logan showed no remorse as the Flynn family lay lifeless nearby. His main concern seemed to be finding his phone, even telling bystanders to “F**k off.” Logan initially pleaded innocent, claiming a coughing fit caused him to black out. However, he later changed his plea to guilty when faced with the overwhelming evidence. He was sentenced to 10 years and 10 months in prison. Emma Flynn, wife and mother, bravely read a statement at his trial, expressing her unbearable pain: “My husband, my kids, my dog were brutally ripped away from me.”
1. Father’s Day Bank Massacre
On the morning of Father’s Day, June 16, 1991, a regular day at the United Bank in Denver turned into a scene of cold-blooded murder. Security guard William McCollum was ambushed by a gunman disguised with a hat and sunglasses. McCollum was forced into a service elevator and taken two floors down, where the unarmed guard was executed.
The gunman then moved to the guard room, surprising and killing three more guards: Todd Wilson, Philip Mankoff, and Scott McCarthy. After killing the four guards, the robber ransacked the bank vault, stealing $197,080 before vanishing. Investigators suspected an inside job and focused on James King, a former police officer who had also worked as a security guard at the bank. King had suspiciously shaved off his mustache after the robbery and admitted to getting rid of his .38-caliber service revolver. Five tellers identified King as the gunman. Despite this, King was acquitted the following year due to what was called “circumstantial” evidence. He lived as a recluse and died with dementia in June 2013. To this day, James King remains the only suspect in this unsolved Father’s Day bank massacre.
These stories serve as a stark reminder that life can change in an instant. Father’s Day is intended to be a time filled with love, laughter, and appreciation for the important role fathers play in our lives. However, for the families affected by these tragic events, it became a day of profound loss and painful remembrance. It’s a powerful reminder to cherish every moment we have with our loved ones and to hold them close.
