Mountain of Skulls

Mountain of bison skulls

This disturbing photograph shows a mountain of bison skulls in the Midwest during the mid-1870s. Between 1800 and 1900, American settlers hunted bison with relentless fervor. Trains carried hunters who shot bison from the windows, leaving their carcasses to rot after taking only their skins and tongues.

From 1872 to 1874, one railroad company shipped half a million bison hides eastward. This slaughter decimated the bison population, reducing their numbers from an estimated 30–60 million to just a few hundred. This photo stands as a stark reminder of human greed and the brink of extinction that these majestic creatures faced.

Fortunately, thanks to the efforts of conservationists, indigenous tribes, and ranchers, the bison population has recovered to an estimated 500,000 in the US today.

Still Missing

Devonte Hart hugging a police officer

This poignant image captures Devonte Hart, one of six children adopted by Jennifer and Sarah Hart, hugging a white police officer during a 2014 protest against police violence in Portland. His anguished expression touched hearts across the internet, but the story took a dark turn.

In March 2018, the Hart family’s SUV plunged over a cliff in California. Authorities suspected Jennifer, the driver, intentionally drove off the cliff. Five bodies were recovered initially, with Ciera’s body found later and remains of Hannah Hart discovered on a beach in May 2018. Devonte’s body was never found.

Investigations revealed Jennifer was drunk while driving, and Sarah had researched ways to commit suicide. Horrifying details of child abuse emerged, with neighbors reporting the children were starved and forbidden from going outside. This image, once a symbol of hope and reconciliation, is now a haunting reminder of a tragic and abusive family dynamic.

Tree of Baby Graves

Torajan baby grave tree

In South Sulawesi, Indonesia, the Toraja people practice animism and have unique funeral rites. When a baby dies before teething, their remains are wrapped in cloth and placed inside a hollowed-out space in a tree trunk. The opening is then covered with palm fiber and sealed.

As the tree heals, it’s believed that the child is absorbed by the tree. This practice reflects the Toraja people’s deep connection to nature and their belief in the cyclical nature of life and death. The image of these trees, holding the remains of infants, is both beautiful and haunting.

Class Photo

Columbine High School class photo

At first glance, this appears to be a normal American class photo. However, a closer look reveals Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold in the upper left-hand corner, playfully pointing imaginary guns at the camera. Just weeks after this photo was taken at Columbine High School in 1999, Harris and Klebold enacted a horrific plan they’d been developing for over a year.

They planted bombs in the cafeteria and their cars, but when those failed to detonate, they proceeded to shoot and kill 12 students and one teacher. They injured 21 others, while three more were injured trying to escape. Harris and Klebold then committed suicide in the school library. The shooters hoped their planned massacre would claim more lives than the Oklahoma City bombing.

Ransom Photo

Samantha Koenig ransom photo

On February 1, 2012, 18-year-old Samantha Koenig was kidnapped from her workplace in Anchorage, Alaska, by Israel Keyes. Keyes stole Samantha’s debit card and valuables, raped, and murdered her the following day. After leaving her body in a shed, Keyes went to New Orleans for a two-week cruise with his family.

Upon returning, he applied makeup to Samantha’s face, sewed her eyelids open, placed a four-day-old newspaper next to her, and took a photo. He sent this photo with a ransom demand of $30,000 to Samantha’s parents. Afterward, he dismembered her body and dumped the parts in Matanuska Lake.

Samantha’s family paid the ransom while Keyes used her debit card for transactions. He was eventually tracked down and arrested due to his careless transactions. Keyes died by suicide on December 2, 2012, while in custody, suspected of murder. The coldness and depravity of this crime are deeply disturbing, making the ransom photo all the more haunting.

Picture of Home

Tereska drawing on a blackboard

In 1948, David ‘Chim’ Seymour captured a heartbreaking image at a school for disturbed children in Warsaw. The photo shows Tereska, an eight-year-old girl, with the caption: “Children’s wounds are not all outward. Those made in the mind by years of sorrow will take years to heal.”

Tereska was tasked with drawing ‘home,’ but instead, she drew a tangle of lines. With one hand still on the blackboard, she looked at the photographer with anguish in her eyes. At four, her father was seized by the Gestapo, and she fled with her older sister to their grandmother’s house. The house was attacked, and her grandmother was killed. Tereska was hit by shrapnel, resulting in brain damage.

Tereska and her sister walked through a war zone for three weeks before reaching a village. Her mental health declined, and she spent her life in an asylum until her death in 1978. Her drawing and expression encapsulate the deep scars of war and loss, making this photo incredibly poignant.

Sword Attack

Kronan school sword attack

On October 22, 2015, 21-year-old Anton Lundin Pettersson entered Kronan School in Trollhättan, Sweden, wearing a German WWII helmet and a Darth Vader-like mask, armed with a sword. He attacked 20-year-old Lavin Eskandar and 15-year-old Ahmed Hassan, who later died at a hospital.

Pettersson encountered two oblivious students who posed with him for a photograph, mistaking him for someone playing an early Halloween prank. Shortly after, 42-year-old teacher Nazir Amso asked Pettersson to remove his mask, and Pettersson responded by stabbing him. Amso died after six weeks in the hospital. Police arrived and shot Pettersson, who later died in the hospital. Investigations revealed Pettersson shouted “I am your father” before attacking his victims.

Shell-shocked

Shell-shocked soldier

While the first photographs emerged in the late 1820s, it wasn’t until a century later that smiles became common. Prior to that, grim expressions prevailed, possibly due to poor dental health or the long exposure times required. The Great War from 1914 to 1918 left little to smile about, with millions of soldiers and civilians losing their lives, and survivors grappling with PTSD, physical disabilities, and the loss of loved ones.

This photograph, taken during the Battle of Flers-Courcelette in September 1916, shows medical orderlies attending to the wounded inside a trench, but it also captures a soldier who appears to be smiling. However, a closer look reveals that the soldier is ‘shell-shocked,’ his psyche shattered by the death and destruction he has witnessed. The term ‘shell shock’ was coined by British psychologist Charles Samuel Myers during the war.

Trapped in Mud

Omayra Sánchez trapped in mud

In 1985, disaster struck Armero, Colombia, when the Nevado del Ruiz volcano erupted, causing a devastating mudslide. The volcano had been active since the 1840s, and by September 1985, it was causing tremors that frightened residents. On November 13, 1985, the eruption triggered a mudslide that covered 85% of Armero, destroying homes, roads, and trapping residents. Approximately 25,000 people died, leaving only a fifth of the population surviving.

Two days later, photojournalist Frank Fournier arrived to document the rescue efforts. A farmer led him to 13-year-old Omayra Sánchez Garzón, who had been trapped under her house for three days, buried neck-deep in water and debris. Rescue workers tried to free her, but her legs were pinned down. Fournier took a photo of Omayra, who asked him to take her to school because she didn’t want to be late.

Omayra asked the rescuers to let her rest and to tell her mother goodbye. She died three hours later. The photo of Omayra, trapped and terrified, became a symbol of the tragedy and the failure of rescue efforts.

Last Effort Before Disaster

Beirut port explosion firefighters

On August 4, 2020, a massive amount of ammonium nitrate improperly stored at the port of Beirut exploded, killing 181 people, injuring at least 6,000, leaving 300,000 homeless, and causing billions in property damage. The explosion was heard in Cyprus and felt in Turkey, Syria, and Israel, making it one of the most devastating non-nuclear explosions in history.

In the aftermath, a photograph was found on a photographer’s recovered phone. The photographer died in the blast. The photo shows heroic firefighters desperately trying to break into a Beirut warehouse (Warehouse 12) following reports of a fire. A unit of 10 firefighters was sent, with 7 following the three attempting to enter the warehouse.

Moments later, the warehouse exploded, engulfing all 10 firefighters. This image captures their last moments of bravery before the catastrophic event, serving as a haunting reminder of the disaster’s scale and the sacrifices made.

These photographs, with their haunting backstories, remind us of the complexities and tragedies of human existence. They serve as reminders of the past, lessons for the future, and a testament to the power of a single image to tell a profound story.
