10 Viking Facts: Surprising Truths About Norse Warriors
SHARE

Vikings! The very name conjures images of fierce warriors, horned helmets (a myth, by the way!), and longships cutting through icy seas. But there’s so much more to these legendary Norse people than just raids and battles. While “Viking” indeed meant “pirate,” a label they weren’t too fond of, their culture was rich, complex, and surprisingly modern in some aspects.

Far from being a monolithic race, Vikings were a diverse group united by a way of life. They were meticulous groomers, with combs made from deer antlers a common find in archaeological digs. They even bleached their hair and bathed frequently! Their influence echoes through centuries, shaping languages, laws, and even technology. Ready to set sail on a voyage of discovery? Here are ten fascinating facts that paint a fuller picture of the incredible Vikings.

10 Surprising Influences on Common Words and Systems

OLD NORSE IN ENGLISH: The words the Vikings left behind

The legacy of the Vikings is deeply embedded in our everyday English. Ever wonder about the origin of “Thursday”? It’s named after Thor, the mighty Norse god of thunder. “Saturday” also has Scandinavian roots; in those lands, it roughly translates to “washing day,” a time for cleanliness and chores, much like many of us use it today.

Their impact isn’t just linguistic. The concept of a jury of peers, a cornerstone of many modern legal systems, is thought to have Viking origins. They used such groups to help resolve disputes. Even modern technology owes a nod to the Norse. The ubiquitous Bluetooth technology is named after King Harald Bluetooth, a Viking king famed for uniting Danish tribes. Just as he brought people together, Bluetooth technology was designed to unite various communication protocols.

9 Diverse Interactions with Many Religions

Viking Raid on Lindisfarne (AD793)

While Vikings frequently raided religious sites like churches and monasteries, their motives were primarily economic rather than a crusade against other faiths. These establishments were often poorly guarded and rich in treasures, making them easy targets. The Vikings themselves had a pantheon of gods and might have been surprisingly open to other beliefs, including Christianity, as they encountered various religions during their travels and trade.

Evidence of their interactions with the Islamic world is particularly fascinating. A silver alloy ring, styled with colored glass common in the Middle East, was discovered in a 9th-century Viking grave in Sweden. This ring bore the Kufic Arabic inscription “il la la,” meaning “for Allah” or “to Allah.” This artifact suggests direct or indirect contact and exchange between the Viking and Islamic worlds.

8 Vikings Knew How to Party and Play

What did Vikings do for fun?

Despite their fearsome reputation, Vikings definitely knew how to unwind and celebrate. Feasts were common, often thrown to commemorate achievements or significant events. The grandeur of these parties directly reflected the host’s wealth and social standing, turning celebrations into a way to display status. Given their robust physiques and active lifestyles, it’s no surprise Vikings could consume impressive amounts of food and drink. Hosting a successful Viking party was a significant feat, earning the host respect within the community.

But it wasn’t all feasting. Did you know Vikings enjoyed skiing? Archaeological finds include ancient wooden skis, suggesting they skied for recreation, hunting, and as a practical mode of transport in snowy landscapes. It’s quite a thought, imagining these hardy folk gliding through the snow, long before modern ski resorts existed!

7 Progressive Views on Gender Equality

Did Viking Warrior Women Exist? | History

The Vikings held some surprisingly progressive views on gender roles for their time. In 2017, a 9th-century jewelry workshop discovered in Denmark is believed to have been used by Valkyries – female warriors – to craft amulets, possibly as good luck charms. Further evidence from burial sites around the Viking world shows female warriors interred with the same honors as their male counterparts. They were often buried in boat-like coffins, alongside their weapons and possessions, essentials believed necessary for the afterlife.

While it’s true that Vikings sometimes took women as captives during raids, archaeological evidence also indicates they often brought their own women on expeditions. These women played crucial roles in establishing new settlements and making new territories home, suggesting a more complex and respected position for women in Viking society than often portrayed.

6 The Ingenious Use of Urine for Fire

Dave And Cody Use Their Own Urine To Make Fire And To Protect Them From Dehydration | Dual Survival

Here’s a rather unusual but clever Viking innovation: they used urine to help start fires. The process involved boiling a type of fungus called tinder fungus (Fomes fomentarius, also known as hoof fungus) in human urine for several days. After this treatment, the fungus was dried.

The key ingredient here was sodium nitrate, present in urine, which impregnated the fungus. This allowed the treated tinder to smolder slowly for extended periods, even days, making it incredibly effective for catching a spark and starting a fire. This resourceful technique demonstrates Viking ingenuity in utilizing available materials, especially in challenging environments.

5 Berserkers: Fuelled by More Than Fury?

VIKINGS ON DRUGS - What Drugs Did Vikings Use in Battle

Viking sagas and Norse literature speak of elite warriors known as “berserkers” (berserkir), who fought with a trance-like, uncontrollable fury. In this state, they were said to possess immense strength, feel no pain, and fight with a reckless disregard for their own lives or those of their enemies. It was the original “beast mode.”

But how did they achieve this terrifying state? One prominent theory suggests they ingested hallucinogenic mushrooms, specifically Amanita muscaria (fly agaric). This mushroom was known to grow in Scandinavia during the Viking Age. The reported behaviors of berserkers – the rage, twitching, and altered perception – align with the effects of consuming such psychoactive substances. It’s plausible that these mushrooms were used in pre-battle rituals, their effects kicking in as the warriors charged into the fray.

4 The Medicinal Power of Honey Wine (Mead)

Making Medieval Mead like a Viking

Wine and other fermented beverages have long been enjoyed, and the Vikings were no exception. They brewed a potent drink called mead, with honey as its primary ingredient. Beyond its intoxicating qualities, Viking mead appears to have had significant health benefits. Honey itself is known for its medicinal properties, largely due to lactic acid bacteria.

The fermentation process involved in making mead dramatically increased the concentration of these beneficial bacteria, potentially reaching levels of 100 million per gram. This supercharged honey wine likely acted as a natural antibiotic, helping to keep the Vikings healthy, treat bacterial infections, and maintain their strength for battle. So, their famed drink was not just for revelry but also for well-being!

3 Harsh Realities: Mercy Killings and Brutal Torture

What Punishment was like for Vikings

Life in the Viking Age was often harsh, and this was reflected in some brutal practices. Strength and resilience were highly valued. It’s documented that Vikings sometimes abandoned or killed sickly infants and, in some cases, firstborn girls, possibly in the hope of ensuring strong male heirs. From their perspective, this may have been considered an act of “mercy,” sparing the child a life of hardship.

A similarly grim pragmatism applied to wounded warriors. They would sometimes be fed a very strong onion soup. If the potent aroma of onions could be smelled emanating from a stomach wound, it indicated a mortal injury. Care for such a warrior would cease, and resources would be conserved for those with a better chance of survival. The Vikings also engaged in horrific forms of torture, such as the infamous “blood eagle,” where a victim’s back was cut open, ribs severed from the spine, and lungs pulled out to create wing-like shapes, ensuring a slow and agonizing death.

2 Unintentional Spreading of Mice and Rats

Viking Mice Invaded the North Atlantic Like Crazy, Too

As the Vikings sailed far and wide on their expeditions, they inadvertently became agents for the spread of rodents. It’s believed that mice and rats hitched rides on their longships, well-stocked with food supplies. When the ships docked in new lands, some of these unwelcome passengers would disembark and establish new colonies.

The ample provisions carried by Vikings for their long voyages would have made their ships attractive breeding grounds for rodents. Furthermore, the thick timber used to construct the ships provided plenty of nooks and crannies for rats and mice to burrow into, creating cozy nests. Research has shown a correlation between Viking voyages across Europe and significant increases in mouse and rat populations. Interestingly, Vikings were also known to be fond of cats, which might have been partly a practical measure to control these stowaways.

1 Romance, Reverence for Gods, and Superstitions

Why Love and Marriage of the Vikings was Weird

Even fearsome Viking warriors had a softer side, especially when it came to romance. A charming custom involved a warrior gifting his bride-to-be a kitten or kittens. Cats were highly valued in Viking households, not just for rodent control but also for their association with Freya, the Norse goddess of love, beauty, fertility, and war. This gesture, pairing fierce warriors with adorable kittens, offers a delightful contrast to their usual image.

The Vikings were deeply religious, worshipping a pantheon that included well-known deities like Thor (god of thunder) and Freya, but also gods and goddesses overseeing various aspects of life, including recreation. They were also quite superstitious and careful not to anger their gods. One such practice involved removing the menacing dragon figureheads from their longships when sailing into friendly waters or approaching their homeland. This was done to avoid scaring local spirits and to appease their own gods, hoping for favor in future endeavors, especially in times of war.

The Vikings were a people of fascinating contrasts—fierce yet well-groomed, pragmatic yet spiritual, brutal yet capable of tender gestures. Their impact on history is undeniable, and these facts offer just a glimpse into their complex and compelling world. From their linguistic contributions to their surprising social structures, the Norse continue to capture our imagination.
