10. A Suffering Soul

Woman screaming in a dark hallway, representing a suffering soul

A few years back, Zenny Suarez went to visit her mother at the National Hospital of Itaugua in Paraguay. While walking down a corridor, she heard terrifying screams coming from an empty hallway. Curious and concerned, Zenny looked for the source. She saw what she described as a “suffering soul” floating in the air.

Startled, Zenny rushed to the nearest nurse’s station. She told them about the screams and the strange figure. The doctors explained that she might have encountered the ghost of Maria Soledad. Maria was a former patient who had died in the ICU years ago from severe injuries after a “group fight.” According to hospital staff, Maria’s spirit has roamed the halls and stairways ever since, her screams echoing her pain.

9. Scariest Island in the Caribbean

Chacachacare Island, part of Trinidad and Tobago, has a chilling past. Christopher Columbus first noted the island in 1498. Later, it was a base for Santiago Marino’s invasion of Venezuela. In the 1860s, the British government turned it into a leper colony. Those sent there were never allowed to leave and were cared for by nuns.

Tragically, two French Dominican nuns caught leprosy. One of them ended her own life. By 1984, the last leper had died, and the remaining nuns left. The island became abandoned. Today, only lighthouse staff live there, though some locals visit for day trips. However, many avoid the island, fearing the spirit of the nun who died by suicide. It’s said she wanders the island cemetery, holding a lantern to light her way through the darkness.

8. Terror in the Maldives

When night falls over the beautiful Maldives, some say the ghosts appear, especially in schools. Students at Aminiya School have reported seeing a shadowy figure in the hallways and bathrooms. This shadow, thought to be the “ghost of Hareera,” is often seen near the mango trees on school grounds.

Legend says Hareera was a janitor at the school who was bullied by students. One story claims she hanged herself in the girls’ bathroom. Another version says she was murdered by the students who tormented her. There’s also the tale of the “aiyyburi,” a disembodied hand. This hand reportedly appears suddenly to students in classrooms or on the playground, adding to the school’s spooky reputation.

7. The Haunted Anchorage Hotel

Historic Anchorage Hotel | Ghost Questers | Episode 1

Even the biggest skeptics might become believers after a stay at the historic Anchorage Hotel. This hotel is famous for its ghost stories. One tale involves Jack Sturgus, Anchorage’s first police chief. He was shot and killed near the hotel, and his murder remains unsolved. It’s rumored that his ghost revisits the scene of his death each year on the anniversary.

Inside the hotel, guests have reported seeing the ghost of a young girl on the second-floor hall. Others claim to have seen the spirit of a bride who hanged herself after her groom didn’t show up for their wedding. Hotel employees are reportedly so accustomed to the ghostly happenings that they keep a diary to record all the strange incidents.

6. The Jinn Cave

The Origins of Jinn: From Evil Spirits to Genie - (Exploring Middle Eastern Folklore)

The ancient city of Ghat in Libya, once a key trading post, is home to prehistoric rock paintings and a historic fortress. About 15.5 miles (25 km) north of Ghat lies the Mountain of Ghosts. This mountain features a natural cave known as the Jinn Cave. Local belief holds that Jinn, or spirits, inhabit this cave and can transform into deer.

Many have tried to capture these deer but failed. During their attempts, they report hearing whispers from the cave. There are ongoing accounts of encounters with strange beings and mysterious sounds coming from the mountain. Because of these eerie tales, most locals avoid climbing the mountain, leaving brave tourists to explore it alone.

5. The Ghosts of Wales

The Skirrid Inn Paranormal Investigation | Ghost Hunting (Evidence Captured)

Wales is known for its stunning beaches and rich history, but it also has its share of spooky stories. Llancaiach Fawr in Caerphilly is considered one of the world’s most haunted places. A tenant who lived there for 35 years reported hearing loud footsteps from the upper floor at all hours. He also saw a man in Victorian clothes rush past him in the garden. A ghostly little boy is also said to haunt the house, tugging on visitors’ clothes and hair.

Another haunted spot is the Skirrid Mountain Inn. This inn was once a courthouse and execution hall where nearly 200 criminals were hanged. In recent times, visitors have reported feeling a noose tightening around their necks, a chilling reminder of the inn’s dark past.

4. Egg Ghosts

MUL GWISHIN: KOREAN WATER GHOSTS | Draw My Life

Korean folklore offers some truly terrifying ghost stories. One example is the tale of egg ghosts. These are faceless, emotionless beings believed to have been women who were childless in life. Because they have no descendants to perform memorial rites for them, these ghosts lose their “personality.” They are doomed to an eternity of misery in the afterlife.

It’s said that anyone who encounters an egg ghost will die instantly. Then there are water ghosts. These are spirits of people who drowned accidentally in lakes or rivers. Not realizing they are dead, they try to get help from the living. Water ghosts tug on swimmers’ clothes and use their unusually long arms and hair to drag people deeper into the water.

3. Haunted Houses

Hawaii's Most Haunted: Kaimuki Kasha House

Haunted houses are a classic element in scary stories, whether in books or movies. Many real-life homeowners have had their own unsettling experiences. One of the most infamous haunted houses is the Kasha House of Kaimuki in Honolulu. In 1941, shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, police received frantic calls from a woman living there. She screamed, “She’s trying to kill my children!” When officers arrived, they found the woman and her four children being violently thrown and pushed by an unseen force.

Another haunted dwelling is the Castello dal Pozzo on Lake Maggiore’s shore in Italy. This beautiful castle is said to be haunted by Barbara, the daughter of Lord Dal Pozzo. Her father was angry about her choice of husband and that she eloped. He locked her in one of the towers, where she eventually died. Today, her spirit reportedly still haunts the lonely tower, grieving for the husband she lost.

2. The Eerie Side of the Karoo National Park

Misty mountains in Karoo National Park, suggesting an eerie atmosphere

South Africa boasts its own collection of spooky legends. Perhaps the most famous are the Flying Dutchman and the ghost of Maria, who still hitchhikes on a road near Uniondale. The Karoo, a semi-desert area, is another popular yet eerie tourist spot. It’s known for its ancient ecosystem and valuable fossils.

After sunset, the Karoo can feel very unsettling. Many drivers have reported seeing the ghost of a British soldier in uniform, covered in bloody bandages, standing by the road. Some have heard bagpipes playing from a deserted cemetery. The Karoo National Park, with its magnificent, often mist-covered mountains, adds to the ghostly feel. Locals believe a water ghost, or “water spook,” creates the mist to move unseen. The park also has several unmarked graves. It’s commonly believed this ghost causes livestock to drown in a natural pool out of sheer malice.

1. Hotels of Horror

A dark, empty hotel hallway, symbolizing hotels of horror

Flight attendants for Cathay Pacific Airlines shared unsettling experiences at an unnamed hotel in Bangkok. One attendant booked a specific room and reported seeing a female ghost rushing through it, passing through windows and walls. The very next night, another flight attendant from the same airline stayed in the same room and had an identical experience.

When British Caledonian Airlines was still operating, its flight attendants often stayed in the H wing of the Dubai International Hotel. One by one, they began to complain of sleeplessness, a feeling of pressure on their chests, and seeing a ghostly figure roaming their rooms. In the Hawaiian Regent Hotel, a newly married couple checked into Room 1022 for their honeymoon. The bride, much younger than her groom and in an arranged marriage, put her wedding dress back on and leaped from the balcony to her death a few hours later. Her husband left the same day. The next day, another couple rented the room. The woman woke late at night to see the apparition of a woman in a wedding dress flying across the room.

These tales, passed down through generations or emerging from recent encounters, remind us that the world might hold more mysteries than we can see. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, these stories have a way of sending a chill down your spine.
