10. The Eerie Tale of the Belled Buzzard

Belled Buzzards in Appalachia

Imagine hearing a faint bell in the distance, not from a church or a cow, but from the sky. In the 19th-century Appalachian and Ozark Mountains, this sound meant trouble. A buzzard flying with a bell tied to its neck was seen as a sign of impending disaster. This isn’t just a flight of fancy; the legend might have roots in reality. A woman in Arkansas reportedly raised turkey vultures as pets. When she released them, she tied bells to their legs, unintentionally creating these winged harbingers.

Why were these belled buzzards considered bad luck? People spotted these noisy birds before some tragic events, like a typhoid outbreak in Tennessee in 1878 and a tornado in South Carolina in 1877. Even after the original belled vultures likely passed away, the mere sound of a mysterious bell was enough to make people believe a belled buzzard was near. This spooky legend spread across states like Georgia and Delaware, lingering until the mid-20th century.

9. Peacock Feathers: A Theatrical Taboo

Colorful peacock feather often seen as bad luck in theaters

Most theater folks know to wish an actor to “break a leg” instead of “good luck.” But did you know about the peacock’s power to jinx a performance? Peacock feathers are a big no-no in the theater world. Gifting a performer a peacock feather before a show is believed to be a surefire way to invite disaster upon the production, according to many superstitious actors.

This superstition seems tied to using the feathers in costumes or as props on stage. The fear likely comes from the peacock feather’s long association with the “evil eye,” a belief particularly strong in the western Mediterranean. Peacock feathers were also thought to be tools for mystics, allowing them to spy on people. Over time, these cursed qualities might have focused specifically on ruining plays.

8. The Aye-Aye: Madagascar’s Messenger of Doom

Aye Aye: The Harbinger of Death

Found only on the island of Madagascar, the aye-aye is a peculiar primate with big eyes and long, slender fingers. While related more closely to chimps and humans than lemurs, local Malagasy folklore paints it as a harbinger of death. The aye-aye’s unsettling reputation partly stems from its fearlessness; it often approaches humans, its unusual appearance perhaps adding to the unease.

Some legends even give the aye-aye a more active, sinister role. It’s believed that this primate uses its long middle finger to pierce the hearts of people as they sleep. Sadly, these superstitions have led to the aye-aye being hunted. Combined with habitat loss from deforestation, this unique creature is now highly endangered.

7. The Albatross: A Sailor’s Sacred Bird

The Superstitious Sailor: Killing a Sea Bird

Sailors have a treasure trove of superstitions, and few are as famous as the curse of the albatross. Thanks largely to Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s 1798 poem, “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” killing an albatross became one of the most feared actions at sea. Bad luck was sure to follow any sailor who harmed this majestic bird.

The albatross is an amazing flyer, capable of soaring for vast distances over the ocean without flapping its wings. Some have been tracked flying over 10,000 miles! This incredible ability gave the albatross an almost magical quality in the eyes of sailors. If one was killed, it was considered a terrible omen. However, as Coleridge’s poem suggests, a sailor could potentially avert ill fortune by wearing the dead albatross around their neck as a mark of their transgression.

6. Kodoku: The Terrifying Insect Poison Curse

A collection of poisonous insects in a jar, representing the Kodoku curse

While many curses on this list are about avoiding bad luck, this one details how to create a potent poison. Known as “Gu” in China and “Kodoku” in Japan, this curse is literally a toxin made from a horrifying collection of bugs. Tradition says sorceresses, also called “Gu” or “Kodoku,” used this poison on men they wished to control or harm. The only cure was said to come from the man’s true lover, given only if her love remained strong.

Creating Kodoku is a chilling process. A jar is filled with various poisonous creatures – think snakes, centipedes, spiders, and scorpions. The jar is then sealed and left until only one creature remains alive, having consumed the others. This survivor is believed to hold the most powerful, concentrated poison. Records of this cursed poison date back as far as AD 610 in Asian history.

5. Owls: Whispers of Witchcraft in Africa

Owl superstitions and lore

Owls are often seen as symbols of wisdom, but in parts of Eastern Africa, from Zimbabwe to South Africa, these nocturnal hunters carry a much darker reputation. Some superstitions claim that if an owl lands on the roof of an elderly person’s home, death is near. Others go further, believing these owls are messengers for witches, or even the means by which a witch’s curse is delivered to an unfortunate victim.

Because of this ominous reputation, owls are often killed on sight or poisoned if their nests are found. Thankfully, conservation efforts are working to change these negative perceptions. Owls play a crucial role in the ecosystem as keystone predators. With five owl species in the region, public acceptance is growing, helping to protect these birds from endangerment.

4. The Deathwatch Beetle’s Ominous Knocking

The tiny beetle scientifically known as Xestobium rufovillosum has a peculiar way of attracting mates: it bangs its head against the wood around its burrow. This can create a surprisingly loud tapping sound. Unfortunately, this sound became associated with impending death. People believed the knocking was the Grim Reaper tapping his bony fingers, leading to the beetle’s common name: the deathwatch beetle.

The superstition around this beetle’s mating call comes from the tradition of the death vigil. Before modern hospitals, families would keep watch over their dying loved ones day and night. In the quiet, somber atmosphere of a vigil, the sudden tapping of the deathwatch beetle from within the wooden structures of the house would make people assume death was very close.

3. Black Cats and the Shadow of Witchcraft

The History Of Black Cats

Today, a black cat crossing your path is often seen as a mild bad luck charm, but its origins are far more dramatic. The story starts with Hecate, the Greek goddess of witchcraft, who was said to keep a black cat as her familiar. In 1233, Pope Gregory IX amplified this association by declaring that black cats were also familiars of Satan.

This link to witchcraft had terrible consequences during the witch hunts of medieval Europe. Black cats became symbols of sorcery, and their presence often suggested a witch lived nearby. While a black cat might have been a bad omen for superstitious folks, it was an even worse sign for any woman living on the edges of society, who could easily be accused of witchcraft. This association between black cats and witchcraft persisted for centuries, even making its way to America.

2. The Tower of London’s Raven Guardians

Why Are Ravens Kept At The Tower Of London?

A famous English legend claims that if the ravens ever leave the Tower of London, the Kingdom of England will fall. Unlike many superstitions, this one is still taken very seriously today. The exact origins of this curse are a bit hazy, but it’s thought to have started around the mid-17th century. King Charles II was supposedly warned by a seer that the ravens nesting at the Royal Observatory must remain there forever to ensure England’s safety.

For nearly four centuries, at least six ravens have been kept at the Tower. The role of Ravenmaster, a prestigious position dedicated to caring for these birds, was established by the crown. Originally the Yeoman Quartermaster’s duty, it became a dedicated role after World War II and was officially named the Ravenmaster in 1968. The Ravenmaster also clips the ravens’ wings to limit their ability to fly away, a practice sometimes criticized as prioritizing superstition over the birds’ freedom.

1. The Curse of the Billy Goat and the Chicago Cubs

The Curse Of The Billy Goat Won't Stop The Cubs

While many curses involve death or dire misfortune, few are as infamous in sports lore as the one supposedly cast upon the Chicago Cubs baseball team by a goat. The “Curse of the Billy Goat” is a cornerstone of Chicago folklore. It all began in 1945 when a tavern owner named William Sianis bought two tickets to a World Series game for himself and his pet goat, Murphy.

The Cubs had been a successful team, winning numerous National League Pennants and a couple of World Series titles. Sianis was excited to bring Murphy to cheer on their hometown team. However, Murphy the goat was denied entry to the stadium. Angered by this, Sianis allegedly declared a curse: “The Cubs? They ain’t gonna win no more.” Despite attempts to lift the curse—including using Holy Water and allowing goats at games—the Cubs didn’t win another World Series until 2016, a drought of 71 years.

These ten tales offer a glimpse into how different cultures have interpreted animal behavior as omens or linked them to powerful curses.
