Top 10 Cutest Animals Around the World (Science Approved)

What makes an animal cute? It’s a question that has captivated hearts and minds. Turns out, there’s a science to it! Our brains are wired to respond to certain traits, a concept known as baby schema, triggering our nurturing instincts. This list explores ten of the cutest animals on Earth, each uniquely qualified to activate your ‘aww’ response.

Contents
10. Most Baby Mammals9. Slow Loris8. Meerkats7. Koala6. Flapjack & Dumbo Octopodes5. Piglets4. Fennec Fox3. Red Panda2. Sea Otters1. Quokka

10. Most Baby Mammals

Why They Are So Cute: Baby Schema

Almost all baby animals tug at our heartstrings, and for good reason. Domesticated dogs, or Canis lupus familiaris, evolved to amplify their cuteness. These puppies have small bodies, proportionally large heads, and big, innocent eyes. It’s a genetic advantage that ensures their survival and place in our homes.

Species that lack these ‘cute’ traits, such as rodents with their hairless bodies and closed eyes at birth, often don’t receive the same adoration. Interestingly, studies show that baby animals often score higher on the baby schema scale than human babies!

9. Slow Loris

Cute slow loris

Why They Are So Cute: Enlarged Eyes

Those irresistibly large-eyed plush toys? They mimic the features of animals like the Slow Loris. These primates boast huge eyes, an adaptation for their nocturnal lifestyle, which also happens to make them incredibly endearing to humans. Combine those peepers with a small snout and nose, and you’ve got an off-the-charts cuteness quotient.

Despite their innocent appearance, Slow Lorises pack a toxic bite—a rare trait among mammals! They secrete a toxic substance from a gland on their arm, making them a species best admired from afar.

8. Meerkats

Group of meerkats

Why They Are So Cute: Enlarged Eyes, Head, and Social Behavior

Meerkats, the social mongooses from southern Africa, charm us with their quirky behavior. Their habit of standing on their hind legs to watch for predators isn’t just about survival; it’s irresistibly cute. They have broad heads, enlarged eyes, small ears, and pointed snouts, hitting all the right notes on the baby schema scale.

Baby meerkats take the cuteness factor up a notch with their disproportionately large heads and eyes. The altruistic nature of meerkat societies, where they care for each other’s young, further enhances their appeal.

7. Koala

Cute koala bear

Why They Are So Cute: Rounded Heads

Koalas, the cuddly marsupials from Australia, are widely considered cute, but keep your distance! Their sharp teeth and claws can be dangerous if they feel threatened. Listed as ‘threatened,’ koala populations suffered greatly from the 2020 wildfires.

Their survival is aided, in part, by their cuteness. We’re more inclined to protect species we find adorable. Koalas’ large, round heads and small features mirror those of human babies, tugging at our protective instincts. Add to that their lazy lifestyle (sleeping 20 hours a day) and fuzzy ears, and their appeal is undeniable.

6. Flapjack & Dumbo Octopodes

Why They Are So Cute: Large Eyes & Diminutive Features

Sometimes cuteness happens by accident. Take the Flapjack octopus, discovered in 2015, with its bright pink color, stubby tentacles, and large eyes, it resembles a friendly ghost! They are abyssal creatures, meaning their adorable traits evolved independently of human appreciation.

One species has even been proposed to be named Opisthoteuthis adorabilis. The Dumbo octopus, another cute cephalopod, boasts large, ear-like fins reminiscent of the Disney character. Pearl, the adorable octopus from Finding Nemo, was based on another Flapjack octopus species, Opisthoteuthis californiana.

5. Piglets

Cute piglets

Why They Are So Cute: Small, Enlarged Noses, & Large Eyes

Piglets are undeniably cute, while adult pigs… not so much. This has led to issues in the pet trade, as adorable piglets grow into massive animals. Piglets feature short snouts, enlarged noses, and large eyes relative to their bodies – all characteristics that scream ‘cute’ to our brains.

An eight-week-old piglet weighs around 35 lbs, a manageable size. But at six months, they can weigh 250 lbs or more! Unlike other animals on this list, pigs lose their cuteness as they mature, a major problem in the ‘Teacup pig’ industry.

4. Fennec Fox

Cute fennec fox

Why They Are So Cute: Small Features & Enlarged Ears

The Fennec fox, a small fox species from the Sahara Desert, flaunts the largest ear-to-body ratio in the canid family. These massive ears help them dissipate heat in their harsh environment, but also contribute significantly to their cuteness.

Weighing only 2.9 to 4.3 lbs, the Fennec fox is the world’s smallest canid. Though not domesticated, they are sometimes sold as exotic pets, raised by hand after being separated from their mothers.

3. Red Panda

Cute red panda

Why They Are So Cute: Enlarged Dark Eyes, Small Features, And Rounded Face

Frédéric Cuvier described the Red Panda as ‘quite the most handsome mammal in existence’ in 1825. Seth Meyers perfectly captured their appeal: ‘They’re like a fox and a raccoon and a bear and a dog and a cat. They’re like every adorable animal in one animal.’

Smaller than giant pandas, their long, fuzzy tails add to their charm. Sadly, despite their widespread appeal, Red Pandas are an endangered species due to habitat loss and human harvesting. Conservation efforts and captive breeding programs have seen some success in recent years.

2. Sea Otters

Why They Are So Cute: Social Behavior, Large Eyes & Noses, Rounded Faces

Sea otters win hearts with their social behavior. They often hold hands while sleeping to avoid drifting apart, mirroring human behavior we find adorable. It’s practical and precious.

They also have a pouch for their favorite rocks, used to crack open shellfish. Their playful behavior, similar to puppies, and their large eyes and noses in rounded faces contribute to their undeniable cuteness.

1. Quokka

Cute quokka smiling

Why They Are So Cute: They Smile, Have Enlarged Eyes, Small Features, And A Pointed Snout

Quokkas, small marsupials from southwestern Australia, are famous for their ‘smiling’ facial expressions, earning them the title of ‘the world’s happiest animals.’ This has led to countless selfies with these creatures, though such interactions can be risky.

While generally unafraid of humans, they are still wild animals. Despite their cuteness, it’s crucial to remember that Quokkas are listed as vulnerable and require our protection.

So, there you have it! Ten of the cutest animals in the world, each triggering our nurturing instincts in unique ways. Cuteness, it seems, is more than just a feeling; it’s a science!
