10. Yves Saint-Laurent

15 Things You Didn't Know About SAINT LAURENT

Yves Saint-Laurent, born in Algeria in 1936, was a gentle and creative soul. Sadly, his school days were marked by bullying. He found his escape in Paris at just 17, after winning a major design award. This success quickly led him to Christian Dior, where his innovative designs breathed new life into the traditional brand. When Dior passed away unexpectedly in 1957, Saint-Laurent, still young, took over as head designer.

However, his bold, futuristic ideas didn’t sit well with Dior’s established clientele. In 1960, when the French Army called him for service, his employers seemed relieved to see him go.

His time as a soldier was tragically short—only 19 days. The brutal environment and harsh treatment from fellow recruits led to a severe mental breakdown. He was admitted to a military hospital, where he underwent controversial electric shock therapy and was given strong psychiatric drugs. During this vulnerable time, Dior fired him, replacing him with another designer.

Though Saint-Laurent eventually recovered and launched his own iconic fashion house, he battled mental health issues throughout his life. He also struggled with dependencies on hallucinogenic drugs, cocaine, and alcohol, which he attributed to his traumatic experiences in the army.

9. Dolce & Gabbana

Venezia 2021: Dolce&Gabbana Alta Sartoria Fashion Show in Arsenale

The world-famous Sicilian design duo, Dolce & Gabbana, found themselves in hot water in 2018. They released an advertisement featuring a Chinese model struggling to eat spaghetti with chopsticks. This was part of their “D&G Loves China” campaign, and the negative reaction was immediate and intense.

Stores in China pulled D&G products from their shelves. Models backed out of a scheduled fashion show, and angry protesters even burned D&G clothing. Shockingly, this wasn’t their first brush with controversy. In 2015, Dolce stated in an interview that babies born through IVF were “synthetic.” These comments led to a personal boycott from Elton John, who called the designers “archaic.” An LGBT rights group also protested outside their London store.

Dolce & Gabbana attributed these outbursts to their strict religious upbringings. However, this didn’t explain Gabbana’s offensive comment in June 2018. He responded to Instagram photos of Selena Gomez posted by a blogger with “è propio brutta,” which roughly means “she’s just ugly,” sparking further criticism.

8. Halston

Halston Talks Fashion in RARE Interviews (Exclusive)

Roy Halston Frowick, known simply as Halston, was born in Iowa in 1932. He started his career as a hat maker, with his most famous piece being the pillbox hat Jackie Kennedy wore at her husband’s 1961 inauguration. By 1970, he was designing womenswear and had a boutique on Madison Avenue. Halston became synonymous with disco-inspired fashion, as celebrities frequently wore his designs to New York’s legendary Studio 54.

In 1973, he sold his business to Norton Simon Inc. but stayed on as an Executive, continuing to design for the label. However, Halston’s extravagant party lifestyle and drug use became public knowledge. His spending habits, like regularly blowing thousands on flowers, spun out of control.

Due to the negative publicity surrounding his personal life, Norton Simon fired him in 1984. He instantly lost all rights to design under his own name. Despite numerous legal battles, Halston never regained control of his company. He passed away in 1996.

7. Ossie Clark

UFH NOIR: The Murder of Ossie Clark

Ossie Clark rose to fame as a designer in the burgeoning fashion scene of 1960s London. His clothes were favored by stars like Mick Jagger and The Beatles. As the Swinging Sixties came to an end, his floral, bohemian styles went out of vogue. By 1980, Clark found himself bankrupt and homeless.

Tragically, in 1996 (the crawled text incorrectly stated 2010), Clark was found brutally stabbed to death in his rented London flat. His former lover, Diego Cogolato, was convicted of his murder. Cogolato had suffered a transient psychotic episode, believing Clark was the devil. He was sentenced to six years in prison.

Clark’s dreamy 1960s designs remain popular on vintage clothing websites. A famous portrait of him by David Hockney is displayed at Tate London, a testament to his lasting influence.

6. John Galliano

Galliano on racist, anti-Semitic remarks: I have no memory of them

Imagine two friends enjoying a drink at a Paris bar. Suddenly, a man at the next table launched into a 45-minute, hate-filled tirade. He used vile anti-Jewish slurs and made death threats. That man was John Galliano, a celebrated designer and then-creative director of Dior.

Police escorted Galliano home. When the victims pressed charges, he accused them of defamation. Soon after, a video emerged showing Galliano at the same bar months earlier, in another drunken outburst. He was filmed making violent threats and slurring, “I love Hitler.”

Dior suspended Galliano after the initial incident in February 2011. In court, Galliano claimed he couldn’t remember the events due to his addiction to alcohol and Valium. He was found guilty of public insults, but his fine was suspended after he issued an apology.

5. Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen | Savage Beauty | Documentary in English

Lee Alexander McQueen started as a tailor on London’s prestigious Savile Row at the young age of 16. He later ventured into theatrical design and then attended university. His graduation collection was provocatively titled: “Jack the Ripper Stalks His Victims.” The clothes, featuring fake blood and human hair, were quickly bought by influential stylist Isabella Blow.

Blow became a close friend and a crucial financial supporter, opening doors for McQueen in the fashion world. McQueen was known for his love of shock value, once even featuring an amputee model in a runway show. In 1996, he became chief designer at Givenchy in Paris but felt constrained by the fashion house’s traditions. He soon returned to London to focus on his own label.

In 2007, Isabella Blow, who suffered from depression, tragically took her own life by drinking weedkiller. Her once-close relationship with McQueen had reportedly grown distant over time. Then, in February 2010, just days after the death of his beloved mother, McQueen was found hanged in his London home.

4. Paolo Gucci

Gucci Cruise 2018 Fashion Show: Full Video

Guccio Gucci arrived in London from Florence around 1898, working as a porter at the Savoy Hotel. Inspired by the elegant luggage of the hotel guests, he started his own leather goods company, opening the first Gucci store in Florence in 1921. By 1953, his son Aldo had moved to New York to expand the brand globally.

Aldo designed the iconic double G logo and was instrumental in Gucci’s rise. In 1977, Aldo appointed his son Paolo as Vice President. However, when Paolo tried to launch his own luxury brand under the Gucci name, the family opposed it, and Aldo fired him. Paolo retaliated by informing authorities about his father’s $7 million tax evasion, leading to Aldo’s imprisonment at age 81.

In 1990, Paolo left his wife Jenny for a horse groomer at their English estate. Jenny claimed Paolo left her and their daughter penniless, sparking a fierce divorce and custody battle. Paolo’s attempts to avoid child support payments led to a shocking incident in 1994. Six prized Arab horses were found starved to death on his farm, an apparent attempt by Paolo to prove he was bankrupt. The plan backfired, and he was jailed for failing to pay child support. Paolo died in 1995, a year after his cousin Maurizio was murdered.

3. Maurizio Gucci

Italy - Maurizio Gucci Shot Dead

Rodolfo Gucci, son of Guccio, wanted the best for his only son, Maurizio. He strongly disapproved of Maurizio’s marriage to Patrizia Reggiani, even trying to get the Bishop of Milan to prevent the wedding. Despite this, the couple married in 1973 and had two daughters. Their marriage ended in a bitter divorce in 1984. Around the same time, Maurizio was embroiled in a power struggle with his cousin Paolo. This ended when Rodolfo died, leaving his majority share of the company to Maurizio.

As CEO, Maurizio sold Gucci holdings to an investment bank for about $120 million. Patrizia was enraged, believing he had sold off their daughters’ inheritance. She began bombarding Maurizio and his new fiancée with death threats.

On March 27, 1995, Maurizio Gucci was shot and killed on the steps of his Milan office. Police suspected a professional hit but had no leads until a man started bragging about his involvement. Through an elaborate phone-tapping operation, Patrizia, the hitman, the getaway driver, and another accomplice were caught discussing their roles in the murder. One later confessed that Patrizia had insisted Maurizio be killed before his upcoming second marriage.

Patrizia earned the nickname “Vedova Nera” (Black Widow) and served 16 years in jail for ordering her husband’s murder. After her release, a TV crew asked why she hired a hitman to kill Maurizio. She coolly replied, “My eyesight is not so good. I didn’t want to miss.”

2. Hugo Boss

15 Things You Didn't Know About HUGO BOSS

Hugo Boss is a German fashion brand recognized for its sleek advertising. However, its history hides a shameful past. In 1924, Hugo Boss established a factory in Metzingen, producing work clothes and raincoats. Soon, he was contracted to make shirts for the National Socialist party, which later became the Nazi party. By 1931, Boss was a committed Nazi party member and the sole manufacturer of uniforms for the Waffen SS, Hitler Youth, and the German army.

As World War II progressed and his workforce dwindled, Boss was supplied with forced laborers. These workers were forcibly taken from occupied Poland and France to keep his factory running. The predominantly female workforce lived in a camp with poor sanitation and no protection from nightly bombing raids.

After the war, Boss, as an active Nazi, was prohibited from running a business. He successfully appealed this decision, and the Hugo Boss company eventually grew into the luxury brand it is today, though its dark origins remain a part of its history.

1. Gianni Versace

American Crime Story Season 2: The Assassination of Gianni Versace RED BAND Trailer (HD)

Gianni Versace was one of the most celebrated fashion designers globally. On the morning of July 15, 1997, he left his mansion in South Beach, Miami, for his usual walk to a local café. Upon returning home, he was shot twice in the back of the head and killed.

His killer was Andrew Cunanan, who was already on the FBI’s most-wanted list when Versace became his fifth victim. Cunanan, from a privileged West Coast family, had attended private school before dropping out of college to become a male escort. Friends later described him as a compulsive liar.

Cunanan’s killing spree began in Minnesota in April 1997 with the murder of his friend, Jeffrey Trail. A few days later, he killed his ex-lover, David Madson. He then moved to Chicago, murdered a stranger, Lee Miglin, and stole his car to drive to New Jersey. There, he killed cemetery worker William Reese, stealing his red pick-up truck.

Cunanan then fled to Miami, where he stayed at a hotel near Versace’s mansion for two months. After murdering Versace, Cunanan abandoned the red truck. Police found newspaper clippings about his earlier killings inside the vehicle. By this time, over 1,000 FBI agents were searching for Cunanan. They eventually tracked him to a houseboat near Versace’s home. As they closed in, Cunanan shot himself in the head.

The motives behind Cunanan’s cross-country killing spree, or why he targeted Versace, remain unknown. The designer’s family maintains that the two had never met.

These ten stories paint a stark picture of the pressures and pitfalls that can accompany fame and fortune in the high-stakes world of fashion. Behind the exquisite designs and glamorous shows, human struggles, intense rivalries, and profound personal tragedies often play out. It’s a reminder that creativity and commerce can sometimes be a volatile mix, leaving lasting scars on those who chase their dreams within this dazzling yet demanding industry.
