They say crime doesn’t pay, and for some folks, it really doesn’t – especially when they make it hilariously easy for the police! We’ve all heard of master criminals, but this list is about the opposite. Get ready to meet ten individuals whose poorly thought-out plans and silly mistakes led them right into the hands of the law. Their stories are so baffling, you’ll wonder what they were thinking!
10. Lukasz Chojnowski
Lukasz Chojnowski earned a funny nickname: the ‘Goldilocks Burglar.’ He broke into a house when the family was on vacation. But instead of just stealing things, Lukasz decided to clean the house! It might sound nice to find your house clean after a trip. But it’s scary when a stranger did it.
Lukasz’s biggest mistake? He got too comfortable. The family came home and found him sleeping in their bed! A simple rule for burglars: don’t stick around for a nap.
9. Jasper Staringa
Sometimes criminals help the police catch them, without even trying! Police were investigating a serious crime. They found a lighter near the scene with DNA on it. They thought it belonged to the person who did it.
With no other clues, the police asked people in the area to give DNA samples. They hoped to find a relative of the person they were looking for. Out of 6,600 samples, one was an exact match! Jasper Staringa had given his own DNA, and it matched the DNA on the lighter. He basically told on himself.
8. Donald “Chip” Pugh
Most people don’t like bad photos of themselves. But Donald ‘Chip’ Pugh took it to a whole new level. The police put out a warrant for his arrest, and they used a photo of him. Chip didn’t like the photo.
So, what did he do? He texted the police a new photo of himself that he thought was better! If you’re wanted by the police, it’s usually smart to stay quiet. Chip seemed to care more about his picture than staying hidden.
7. Ciriaco Balmaceda
It’s important to know what to carry with you. Ciriaco Balmaceda learned this the hard way. He and his friends tried to rob a house. But the homeowner had a gun and scared them off.
As they ran away, Ciriaco dropped his bag. What was inside? His school ID and other papers with his name on them! He left all his information right at the place he tried to rob. The homeowner gave the bag straight to the police.
6. Ricardo Cardona
Being tired can lead to bad choices, especially if you’re trying to commit a crime. Ricardo Cardona broke into a store. He was drunk and stole some sausages. He managed to get out of the store.
But then, he made a really silly decision. He went back inside the store to take a nap! He fell asleep and didn’t wake up before he was caught. If you get away with something, it’s probably best not to go back to the scene for a snooze.
5. Trevor Jones
Social media is fun, but it can also get you into trouble. Trevor Jones was robbing a house. The owner came home unexpectedly! The owner cleverly took Trevor’s wallet and car keys before calling the police. Trevor managed to run away.
Later, while robbing another house, he decided to take a break. He used the homeowner’s computer to log into his Facebook account. The big mistake? He forgot to log out! He left a clear clue for the police.
4. Paul Benson
Trying to save money on groceries is common. Stealing them is not a good idea. Paul Benson tried to steal from a supermarket. When the store workers saw him, he decided to run.
Paul made a few mistakes, like getting caught on camera. But his biggest goof was his clothes. He was wearing a sports shirt with his last name printed right across the back! It’s hard to get away with a crime when you’re wearing a giant name tag.
3. Michael Baker
Sharing things online can be fun, but sometimes it’s better to keep things private. Michael Baker thought siphoning gas from a police car was a cool idea. He even had his girlfriend take a picture of him doing it. He was posing by the car with the gas can.
Then, he posted the picture on Facebook for everyone to see. That included his friends, family, and, yes, the local police. If you do something against the law, maybe don’t announce it to the world online.
2. Craig Garnett
Some people learn from their mistakes. Others, well, they don’t. Craig Garnett had already spent ten years in prison for robbing banks and stores. You’d think he’d learned his lesson. But after he got out on parole, he went back to robbing banks.
He didn’t even get better at it. He got caught again because he wrote a really messy note during an attempted bank robbery. His bad handwriting helped lead him right back to prison.
1. Christopher Gifford
Sometimes, not doing something can get you into trouble. Christopher Gifford’s problem wasn’t just what he did, but what he didn’t do. People reported seeing a dangerous cobra snake near his house. When police investigated, they found many snakes at his home, including very venomous ones.
Owning these snakes wasn’t the main issue. The problem was that Gifford wasn’t following the rules for keeping them. He didn’t have the right cages, and he didn’t report when animals escaped. If you have unusual hobbies, make sure you follow all the laws, not just the parts you like.
And there you have it – ten tales of criminals who probably should have spent a little more time planning, or maybe just chosen a different path altogether! From sleepy burglars to social media show-offs, their lack of foresight provided some truly unbelievable moments. It just goes to show that sometimes, the biggest obstacle to a successful crime is the criminal themself.
