10 Tim Allen’s Heavy Santa Suit in The Santa Clause

The Santa Clause - Arose Such a Clatter (SCENE)

Becoming Santa Claus in The Santa Clause (1994) wasn’t just a magical transformation for Scott Calvin; it was a real ordeal for actor Tim Allen. The film itself had a gloomier start initially, with an original script where Scott actually shot Santa! While this was softened to an accidental fall, Allen’s physical experience was anything but light.

Allen revealed that getting into the cumbersome fat suit and makeup took a grueling three and a half hours each day. Taking it off was another hour and a half. Worse still, he could only film in the suit for about six hours at a time due to poor ventilation. The costume woes didn’t end there; the original Santa suit featured bells that jingled with Allen’s every move, often ruining sound takes and requiring him to re-record audio later. It seems playing jolly Old Saint Nick came with some serious challenges!

9 The Very Real Tarantula in Home Alone

Home Alone (1990) - Kevin Escapes Scene (5/5) | Movieclips

Home Alone (1990) is famous for Kevin McCallister’s inventive booby traps. While many stunts involved clever props (like fake ornaments for Marv to step on), some risky moments were surprisingly real, especially without today’s CGI. One iconic scene involved a tarantula crawling across Marv’s (Daniel Stern) face.

Believe it or not, that eight-legged co-star was 100% real! Stern, understandably nervous, asked if the spider’s stinger could be removed. He was told the tarantula would die. His reply? “Yeah, but if you don’t take it out, I’ll die.” He also worried his terrified scream might provoke the spider, but was assured it didn’t have ears. Thankfully, they nailed the scene in one take, capturing Stern’s genuinely blood-curdling shriek for cinematic history.

8 Chevy Chase’s Painful Punch in Christmas Vacation

Chevy Chase Watches National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation | WHOSAY

We all know Viggo Mortensen famously broke toes filming The Lord of the Rings, but did you know Chevy Chase suffered an on-set injury during National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)? It happened during one of Clark Griswold’s classic moments of frustration.

In the memorable scene where Clark finally snaps over the non-working Christmas lights, he unleashes his fury on the plastic yard decorations. During this rampage, Chase actually broke his pinky finger while punching a plastic Santa. Like a true professional (or a truly frustrated Griswold), he pushed through the pain to finish the take. After the initial punch, his subsequent attacks on the sleigh and reindeer involved more kicking than punching – for a very good reason! And yes, the very take where he broke his finger made it into the movie.

7 Bruce Willis’s Secret Footwear in Die Hard

Die Hard - Put me down for twenty, I'm good for it!

Is Die Hard (1988) a Christmas movie? That debate rages on, but one thing’s for sure: John McClane goes through a lot. Early in the film, Bruce Willis’s character removes his shoes, only to be caught barefoot when terrorists take over Nakatomi Plaza. This becomes a major plot point, especially when the villains shatter glass to impede him.

Of course, Willis didn’t actually shred his feet running across broken glass. To protect the action star, the production team equipped him with specially made rubber feet. These props allowed him to perform the intense scenes without injury. While quite convincing for the most part, eagle-eyed viewers might spot these fake feet in certain shots, like when McClane dives for cover during an FBI helicopter attack. Interestingly, Daniel Stern also wore fake feet for some scenes in Home Alone!

6 The Unseen Slasher in Black Christmas Was the Cameraman

For those who prefer their Christmas viewing with a side of terror, Black Christmas (1974) is a chilling classic. The film expertly builds suspense around a group of sorority sisters stalked during Christmas break. Director Bob Clark made a crucial decision: the audience would almost never see the killer’s face.

Instead, we experience many terrifying moments from the killer’s point of view. These distinctive shots, which sometimes included the killer’s hands and arms, were ingeniously executed by cameraman Bert Dunk. Dunk created a custom-made rig that mounted the camera directly onto his body. This setup gave him incredible flexibility and allowed his own hands to appear in the frame, such as during the tense trellis climb and the shocking bag strangulation scene. This innovative approach made the killer feel even more menacing and omnipresent.

5 Michael Caine’s Serious Approach to The Muppet Christmas Carol

Muppet Christmas Carol: Forecolsure Season

Playing Ebenezer Scrooge alongside a cast of Muppets in The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) presented unique challenges for Sir Michael Caine. As the primary human actor, he was fully immersed in the Muppets’ world. The sets were built to accommodate the puppeteers, meaning Caine often had to carefully navigate narrow planks raised above the performers.

It’s hard to picture anyone else as Scrooge (though George Carlin was considered!), and Caine’s commitment was key. He famously told director Brian Henson he would approach the role as if “working with the Royal Shakespeare Company,” insisting, “I will never do anything Muppety… I am going to play Scrooge as if it is an utterly dramatic role and there are no puppets around me.” To prepare, Caine even studied CNN coverage of Wall Street embezzlers, finding them a “very good picture of meanness and greed.”

4 Billy Bob Thornton’s Drunken Method Acting in Bad Santa

Bad Santa Drunk At Work

If you like your Christmas movies with a dark, comedic twist, Bad Santa (2003) is probably on your list. Billy Bob Thornton’s portrayal of an alcoholic conman posing as Santa to rob stores is hilariously cynical. To truly embody the character, Thornton sometimes employed a method-acting approach – meaning he was genuinely drunk on set.

Thornton shared in an interview that for one particular scene where his character works as an inebriated mall Santa, he “drank about three glasses of red wine for breakfast.” He didn’t stop there, later switching to “vodka and cranberry juice” and topping it off with “a few Bud Lights.” By the time filming began, he admitted, “I barely knew I was in a movie.” The scene was supposed to start with him on an escalator, but he was so intoxicated he fell asleep. He woke up at the top, momentarily confused, before carrying on with his lines!

3 Will Ferrell’s Hilarious Improvisations in Elf

Elf (2003)- Buddy in New York

It’s almost impossible to imagine anyone but Will Ferrell playing the infectiously enthusiastic Buddy in Jon Favreau’s Elf (2003). A big reason for this is Ferrell’s incredible comedic timing and penchant for improvisation, which led to some of the movie’s most memorable moments.

Elf was produced on a relatively tight budget, with limited time for shooting in New York City. Consequently, the scenes of Buddy first exploring the Big Apple were filmed “guerrilla style.” A small crew simply followed Ferrell, dressed as Buddy, as he interacted with (and hilariously startled) actual, unsuspecting New Yorkers. That man in the red tracksuit Buddy mistakes for Santa? Not an actor! Ferrell’s over-the-top, excited screaming about Santa in Gimbel’s was also largely unscripted. Even Buddy’s startled reactions to the jack-in-the-boxes were genuine; a crew member used a remote to trigger them unpredictably.

2 The Groundbreaking Practical Effects (and Monkeys!) of Gremlins

Gremlins 1984. BAR scene complete in HD

When you’re tired of overly sweet holiday tales, the horror-comedy Gremlins (1984) offers the perfect antidote. A key part of its enduring charm is its brilliant use of practical effects, masterminded by Chris Walas (who also did the stomach-churning effects for The Fly).

But puppetry wasn’t the initial plan. Director Joe Dante and producers initially tried using monkeys dressed in gremlin suits! Unsurprisingly, this experiment failed spectacularly when a test monkey caused chaos on set – behaving, ironically, much like a real gremlin would. This led them to puppets, but they weren’t without issues. The Gizmo puppets, being small and delicate, broke down frequently, frustrating the crew so much they jokingly created a “Horrible Things To Do to Gizmo” list. The film’s success, coupled with its somewhat intense content for a PG rating, helped Steven Spielberg advocate for and ultimately create the PG-13 rating we know today.

1 Ralphie’s Real Tobacco Chew in A Christmas Story

Adios, Bart! | A Christmas Story | TBS

The beloved classic A Christmas Story (1983) is filled with nostalgic childhood moments, including Ralphie’s vivid daydreams. In one fantasy sequence, young Ralphie, played by Peter Billingsley, imagines himself as a rootin’-tootin’ cowboy, saving his family with his trusty BB gun – complete with a classic cowboy tobacco chew. Shockingly, the tobacco wasn’t entirely fake.

Billingsley revealed that, at just 12 years old, the prop department actually gave him real Red Man chewing tobacco for the scene. He went along with it, but about 15 minutes later, disaster struck. “I start sweating. My stomach starts hurting, and I start throwing up,” he recalled. When director Bob Clark (who also directed Black Christmas!) found out, filming was paused. Once Billingsley recovered, they wisely switched to raisins for him to chew. Thankfully, the incident didn’t sour him on holiday films; he later appeared in Elf and Four Christmases.

From authentic tarantula encounters to genuine on-set drunkenness and groundbreaking puppetry, the making of our favorite Christmas movies is often as eventful and surprising as the films themselves. These behind-the-scenes glimpses show the dedication, creativity, and sometimes sheer luck involved in bringing these holiday staples to life. Next time you settle in for a festive film, you’ll have a whole new layer of trivia to appreciate and share!
