10. Drawings of the Scene

The innocent scribbles of a child might seem meaningless, but they can sometimes hold the key to solving a crime. In 2017, two boys in Germany, aged eight and nine, witnessed a hit-and-run. They drew a detailed map of the incident, which helped the police identify and apprehend the driver. Similarly, in another case, four six-year-olds sketched a vehicle hitting a post, providing valuable evidence for the investigation.

9. Stick Figure Sketch

Eleven-year-old Rebecca DePietro from Connecticut helped solve a string of burglaries with a simple stick-figure sketch. After police investigated burglaries in her neighborhood, including her own home, Rebecca provided a basic drawing of a suspicious person she had seen. To her surprise, the police were able to use the sketch to identify and arrest a man who confessed to ten burglaries. Rebecca was honored for her contribution and gave credit to her art teacher.

8. Theft Ring Collapse

In 2012, eight-year-old Landon Crabtree from Nashville, Tennessee, had his Playstation, games, and iPad stolen. Not one to be deterred, Landon used the “Find My iPhone” app to track the location of his stolen iPad. He alerted the authorities, who, with Landon’s help, tracked the items to a location a few miles from his home. Police not only recovered Landon’s iPad but also discovered other stolen goods, leading to the arrest of John Docherty on burglary charges.

7. Human Arrow

Kids Form Human Arrow to Direct Cops to Crooks

During an Easter egg hunt in Capel, Surrey, participants noticed police helicopters searching for intruders in a nearby building. When two men ran across a field, the families realized they were the suspects. In a moment of quick thinking, the group of 30 participants, mostly children, lay down on the ground in the shape of an arrow, pointing in the direction the men had fled. The helicopter crew spotted the human arrow and guided ground units, leading to the arrest of the two men.

6. It’s in the Eyes

In a tragic case, Kelley Clayton was murdered in her New York home. Her husband, Thomas Clayton, and his former employee, Michael Beard, were responsible. The key to the arrest came from Kelley’s seven-year-old daughter, Charlie. She told investigators that men were hurting her mom and identified the attacker by saying, “Because his eyes look just like daddy’s.” Her statement was crucial in solving the case and bringing the perpetrators to justice.

5. The Oldest Cold Case

The Coldest Case Ever Solved

Though not solved directly by a child, Kathy Sigman’s childhood memory was crucial in cracking one of the oldest cold cases. In 1957, nine-year-old Kathy’s friend, Maria Ridulph, was abducted and murdered. The case went cold for 55 years until 2011, when police re-examined the evidence and identified Jake McCullough as a suspect. Kathy provided detailed and consistent testimony about her recollections of that day, which helped secure McCullough’s conviction in 2012.

4. Home Detective

12-year-old girl solves crime

When Jessica Maple’s great-grandmother’s home was robbed, Jessica, a 12-year-old who had attended a Junior District Attorney Camp, decided to investigate herself. Not convinced it was an inside job as the police suspected, Jessica found evidence of a broken window and clothes strewn about. She visited local pawn shops and found her great-grandmother’s furniture for sale. She even visited a suspect’s home, where he allegedly confessed. Despite her efforts and findings, the police did not act on her intel, showcasing her remarkable initiative.

3. Missing Person

4 Kids Team Up to Find Missing 97-Year-Old California Woman

When 97-year-old Glenneta Belford, who suffered from dementia, went missing from her care home, local police sought community assistance. A group of friends aged 10-11, led by Logan Hultman, joined the search. Hope Claiborne identified a woman wandering down the road from a photo her father sent her and called 9-1-1. Police responded quickly and safely returned Glenneta to her care home.

2. Lego Setup

Case Cracked: Building Blocks of Justice

The 1991 murder of Lucille Johnson in Salt Lake City remained a cold case for years. Police found Lego pieces at the crime scene but couldn’t connect them to the murder. In 2014, the case was reopened, and DNA evidence under the victim’s nails linked John Sansing to the crime. Fingerprints on the Lego pieces matched Sansing’s five-year-old son, leading police to believe Sansing used his son to gain entry into the house, ultimately solving the case.

1. Pedophile Hacker

teen hacker

Brad Willman started exploring computers at age five and taught himself to hack by 14. He used a Trojan Horse virus to access other computers, monitoring hundreds of targets. Later, he began targeting online sex predators, collecting evidence, and reporting them to the police. By 19, Willman had infiltrated over 3,000 computers and helped the police arrest several suspected child predators, becoming a young cyber hero.

These stories demonstrate that children can play significant roles in solving crimes, whether through their artistic skills, sharp observations, or simply their willingness to help. Their unique perspectives and actions can provide crucial leads and help bring criminals to justice.
