Money can’t always buy happiness, especially when it’s inherited. The promise of a vast fortune sounds like a dream, right? Yet, for many wealthy families, the passing of a loved one opens a Pandora’s box of greed, betrayal, and bitter conflict.

When millions, or even billions, are at stake, family ties can snap, leading to epic legal battles that can span decades. Get ready to delve into ten of the most vicious and heart-wrenching fights over inherited fortunes. These stories reveal how the quest for wealth can tear families apart, leaving behind a legacy of anger and regret.

10 Sir Jacob Downing

Downing College at the University of Cambridge

The University of Cambridge in England is a highly respected academic institution, home to 31 colleges. These colleges offer students a place to live and a community for building lifelong friendships. Many were established thanks to generous gifts from wealthy individuals.

For centuries, England’s wealthiest have left their mark on the university by funding colleges, becoming lasting benefactors. However, not all donations have been straightforward. Some have sparked complex legal battles lasting for decades.

Consider Downing College. It was founded through a 17th-century bequest from statesman Sir George Downing. The path wasn’t smooth. In the late 18th century, Sir Jacob Downing, Sir George’s last living heir, inherited a large family fortune. Upon his death in 1764, he left it to his wife.

The University of Cambridge challenged this will, seeking funds for Sir George’s century-old donation. This ignited a fierce 40-year legal struggle. By the time the university won, nearly four decades later, legal fees had consumed much of the money. Little remained to build the college. Still, the university pushed forward with what was left. Finally, in 1820, Downing College opened its doors to its first students.

9 Harinder Singh Brar

A legal will document and pen, symbolizing inheritance disputes

India was once home to many royal families who ruled various regions, accumulating wealth and political power for centuries. While their power has diminished, many families still hold significant assets passed down through generations.

One such family was led by Sir Harinder Singh Brar, the last ruler of the Faridkot state. He created multiple wills during his lifetime, revising them several times. He once disinherited a daughter, only to reconcile with her later. When he died in 1989, a vicious legal battle over his estate erupted.

After Sir Harinder’s death, his daughter Amrit Kaur, whom he had previously disinherited but later reconciled with, expected to be included in the revised will. However, a different will was presented at the inquest, again disinheriting Amrit. This sparked a 31-year legal fight starting in 1991, involving Kaur, her two sisters, an uncle, and a cousin.

The Indian Supreme Court finally settled the case in 2022, upholding a lower court’s decision that the final will was a forgery. A forensic expert confirmed that the handwriting and signatures were not genuine. Sir Harinder was known for his beautiful script, and the discrepancies raised suspicions. Kaur ultimately secured her share, but then faced further battles over alleged forgery plots, suing 23 individuals she believed were involved.

8 Leona Helmsley

The Meanest Woman in 1980s New York

Leona Helmsley, a prominent socialite, earned the nickname “The Queen of Mean.” Known for her success in business and real estate with her husband, she also gained a reputation for her harsh treatment of others and her extreme frugality.

Her notoriety peaked in 1988 when she was convicted of tax evasion. A witness testified hearing her say, “We don’t pay taxes. Only the little people pay taxes.” After her prison sentence, Helmsley became an avid dog lover, adopting a Maltese named Trouble.

When Helmsley passed away in 2007, she left Trouble a staggering $12 million inheritance. Her brother, who was to care for the dog, received $10 million. Two of her grandchildren received $5 million each, a small fraction of her $4 to $8 billion estate. The bulk of her wealth was designated for a charitable trust. The large sum left to Trouble quickly led to legal challenges.

Two disinherited grandchildren successfully sued for $3 million each. The estate’s executors won a $100 million claim for their services. A judge later reduced Trouble’s inheritance to $2 million. Animal welfare groups also fought for a larger share of the charitable trust. In the end, “The Queen of Mean” left behind a complex and contentious legal legacy.

7 Peter Thellusson

Rendlesham Hall Suffolk, linked to Peter Thellusson's estate

The story of Peter Thellusson serves as a stark warning about trying to control wealth long after death. Thellusson, an English merchant, amassed a great fortune. When he died in 1797, he wanted his wealth to keep growing, but he didn’t want his children or grandchildren to access it.

His will instructed that his estate be held in a trust, with all interest reinvested for decades. The plan was for the money to accumulate until all his great-grandchildren had passed away. Only then would the remaining descendants inherit the fortune.

Thellusson’s plan backfired spectacularly. His surviving family was immediately left in financial difficulty. In 1798, the court upheld his unusual will, locking the money away. Nearly sixty years later, in 1856, after all his great-grandchildren had died, a three-year court battle began to determine the rightful heirs. However, there was hardly any money left. Court fees and taxes had consumed most of the accumulated wealth. Thellusson’s grand vision of enriching distant descendants ended up a failure.

This case was so extraordinary that it led to a change in English law. To prevent similar situations, Parliament passed the “Thellusson Act” in the 19th century. This law aimed to stop people from locking away inheritable assets from their families for such extended periods.

6 Jay Pritzker

Whatever Happened to Little Princess star Liesel Matthews?

Jay Pritzker, founder of numerous businesses including the Hyatt hotel chain, accumulated a massive fortune. When he died in 2001, his estate became the subject of intense legal scrutiny and public attention. The Pritzker family, known for preferring privacy, found themselves in the spotlight.

In 2003, Liesel Pritzker, Jay’s 19-year-old niece, sued her father and cousins. She claimed that $1 billion had been stolen from the trust fund established for her and her brother. She also alleged they were excluded from a secret agreement to sell off family companies.

The legal battle dragged on for years, dividing the family and exposing their private affairs. The situation became particularly uncomfortable for sons Anthony and Jay Robert Pritzker. After two years of court proceedings, the family reached a settlement with Liesel and her brother.

The pair received approximately $560 million to drop their claims. While not all family members agreed with the payout, the settlement resolved the dispute. More importantly for some Pritzkers, it allowed them to retreat from the media’s glare and return to their relatively private lives.

5 William Jennens

An illustration of Charles Dickens writing, inspired by inheritance cases like Jennens'

The case of William Jennens, an Englishman who died in 1798, is one of history’s most fascinating and complex inheritance battles. Jennens was known as the richest commoner in England, with a fortune estimated at over two million pounds sterling. Crucially, he died without a will, leaving his vast estate up for grabs.

This sparked a frenzy, with people worldwide claiming to be related to Jennens, all hoping for a share of his fortune. The confusion about Jennens’s own parentage only complicated matters further, intensifying the battle for his inheritance.

The legal fight over Jennens’s estate lasted for more than a century. It was so dramatic that it’s believed to have inspired Charles Dickens’s novel Bleak House. Ultimately, lawyers ended up consuming the largest portion of the fortune in fees. The case of William Jennens remains a powerful cautionary tale about the perils of dying intestate (without a will).

The incredible wealth he gathered during his life was almost entirely depleted by attorney’s fees. Those who hoped to benefit saw it as a tragic waste. It stands as a lesson for everyone, especially the successful, to ensure they have a clear will in place.

4 John Seward Johnson

John Seward Johnson | Disinheritance & Incapacity

John Seward Johnson, linked to the Johnson & Johnson company, was a prominent figure. Married to his wife Essie for over three decades, his life seemed idyllic. However, it took a scandalous turn when he became involved with a new employee, Basia Piasecka, a 30-year-old Polish immigrant. Despite a 40-year age gap and a controversial start, they remained together until Seward’s death in 1983. That’s when the real drama over his massive estate began for his children.

Upon the tycoon’s death, his six children were shocked to learn he had left nearly his entire half-billion-dollar estate to Basia, his former maid. They took her to court, alleging she had exploited Seward’s age and mental condition. Basia fought back, claiming their marriage was happy and that the stepchildren were merely after their late father’s money.

The case went to trial in 1986, lasting four months. Just before the verdict, Basia agreed to a settlement. She walked away with over $300 million. The remainder of the fortune was divided among the children and a charity.

3 Nina Wang

The Double Kidnap of Teddy Wang | Crime Investigation Asia (FULL)

Nina Wang was a woman of striking contrasts. Known as “Little Sweetie,” she was one of the world’s richest individuals at the turn of the millennium. Despite her immense wealth, she lived frugally. She maintained a childlike persona, often seen in pigtails, miniskirts, and ankle socks well into her 60s.

Her husband, Teddy Wang, was an incredibly wealthy businessman who was kidnapped twice. The second kidnapping ended tragically when the ransom wasn’t paid in time. Teddy’s shocking disappearance led to a legal battle over his fortune. Nina was even jailed for forgery related to that inheritance at one point, but she eventually received his estate.

Nina’s death in 2006 triggered a second legal war, this time over her $4 billion fortune. Her married younger lover, Tony Chan, claimed to be the sole beneficiary of her will. Nina’s family contested the will’s validity, leading to a lengthy court battle. The case captivated audiences across China and Asia, eager for salacious details of their relationship.

The court ultimately ruled Nina’s will a forgery, finding that she had actually left her fortune to charity. In 2012, Tony Chan was sentenced to 12 years in prison for forging the will. Nina Wang is remembered as the eccentric, wealthy woman at the heart of two massive and bitter inheritance disputes.

2 Fred Koch

Fred Koch: The Founder of World's Second Largest Private Company Koch Industries

Fred Koch was an American oil magnate in the mid-20th century. His four sons were all involved in the family business, Koch Industries. Upon his death in 1967, Fred left instructions for his sons to be kind to one another. Sadly, this advice was not heeded. The siblings harbored intense rivalries and battled for control of the company. The inheritance was intrinsically linked to the lucrative family business.

Eventually, brothers Charles and David bought out their other brothers, Bill and Frederick, for over $1 billion. Charles and David understood the immense value of the oil-related enterprise. While a nine-figure payout is substantial, Bill and Frederick later felt shortchanged.

Over the following years, Bill and Frederick argued that the $700 million they each received was unfairly low. They spent the next two decades in court attempting to secure more money. This created a rift between the pairs of brothers that lasted 18 years, even persisting through their mother’s funeral.

It later emerged that their mother had cut Bill and Frederick out of her own will due to the ongoing lawsuit. The legal battle finally concluded in 1998 when Bill and Frederick lost their claim for additional funds. They had to accept their $700 million share.

1 J. Howard Marshall

Anna Nicole Smith's Legal Battle for Her Late Husband's Money: Part 2

Surely, we couldn’t forget one of the most infamous inheritance sagas ever. Anna Nicole Smith, a well-known model and dancer, met billionaire J. Howard Marshall in a gentlemen’s club in 1991. They married three years later. The union immediately raised eyebrows due to the age difference: Anna was 26, and Marshall was 89.

Howard passed away just a year after their wedding, igniting a vicious and bizarre battle for his inheritance. The core issue was that Howard had not included Anna in his will. He also excluded his son, Howard Jr., bequeathing his fortune primarily to his other son, E. Pierce Marshall. This set the stage for a dramatic courtroom showdown.

The conflict between Anna and Pierce quickly escalated, becoming a media sensation filled with twists and turns. Pierce presented 13 legal documents he claimed proved his rightful heirship. Anna argued that her late husband had verbally promised her half his estate. The case became a years-long media circus, with conflicting rulings from Texas state courts and California bankruptcy courts. It even reached the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled only that Anna could continue her fight.

Tragically, both Anna Nicole Smith and E. Pierce Marshall died in the mid-2000s. However, the legal battle continued, with Smith’s daughter becoming the potential heir. By the mid-2010s, courts had ruled against Smith’s estate, favoring Marshall’s family. In a telling sign of the case’s length and complexity, by 2017, the judge who had overseen the entire probate case reportedly pleaded to be removed from it.

These ten stories paint a stark picture: inherited wealth, far from being a simple blessing, can become a catalyst for devastating family conflicts. From legal battles spanning decades to fortunes dwindling under the weight of court fees, the human cost of these disputes is often immeasurable. It’s a sobering reminder that sometimes the greatest treasures are not monetary, and the fight for riches can leave everyone poorer in spirit.
