10 Ancient Ram Inn

Venture to Wotton-under-Edge, not far from Bristol, England, and you’ll discover the Ancient Ram Inn. Whispers call it Britain’s most haunted house, with a history stretching back to 1145. Its foundations rest on an ancient pagan burial site, and some say it sits on powerful ley lines connected to Stonehenge.

This historic inn once housed workers and slaves who constructed St. Mary’s Church nearby. Legend has it that diverting water streams around the church grounds tore open a gateway for dark energies. The inn later passed to a priest before John Humphries bought it in 1968.

Humphries’s first night was terrifying. He claimed unseen “demonic forces” grabbed him and dragged him across his room. His search for answers uncovered signs of ritual sacrifices and the chilling discovery of children’s skeletal remains, possibly victims of dagger attacks.

Though his family departed, Humphries stayed at the Ancient Ram Inn until he passed away in 2017. Yet, the stories continue. Reports claim spirits like a witch burned at the stake, shadowy monks, and even a Roman Centurion still wander its ancient halls. Today, John Humphries’s daughter, Caroline, welcomes paranormal investigators, thrill-seekers, and curious tourists to experience this centuries-old, haunted building.

9 Africana Library

In Kimberley, South Africa, stands the Africana Research Library, formerly the Kimberley Public Library, which opened its doors in 1887. By 1984, it transformed into a key research library, gaining a reputation not just for its collection but also as one of the nation’s most haunted buildings.

The library’s ghostly tale centers on its first librarian, Bertrand Dyer. Caught in a pricing scam, Dyer chose a tragic end in 1908 by swallowing arsenic. He suffered for three agonizing days before the poison took his life.

It’s said that Dyer never truly left his post. Visitors and staff have reported seeing his ghostly figure pacing the halls and mysteriously rearranging books among the library’s vast collection. Some even say that if you can’t find a specific book, just call out its title, and Dyer’s spirit might help you locate it.

8 Lawang Sewu

Lawang Sewu, meaning “Thousand Doors” in Javanese, is an impressive colonial-era building in Semarang, Central Java. It once served as the headquarters for the Dutch East Indies Railway Company. With around 600 windows and numerous doors and arches, its design creates a maze-like feel across its several buildings, labeled A, B, C, and D.

During World War II, Japanese soldiers took over Lawang Sewu. They turned the basement of Building B into a grim prison where many captives were brutally murdered. Reports persist of restless, headless spirits этих prisoners wandering the complex.

The ghost of a Dutch woman who reportedly took her own life on the premises is also said to roam Lawang Sewu. While the Indonesian government has tried to clean up the building and promote it as a regular tourist spot, ghost tours remain its most popular and spine-chilling attraction.

7 Masada Fortress

Perched on the edge of the Judean Desert, King Herod the Great built Masada as a grand castle complex in the last century BC. In the first century AD, when the ancient Romans conquered Judea, Masada became a stronghold for Jewish rebels. However, as Roman victory became certain, many of the women and children sheltering within the fortress chose mass suicide over capture.

Later, during the Byzantine era, monks established a monastery at Masada. After they left, the site lay deserted for roughly 13 centuries until its rediscovery in 1828. Declared a national park in 1966, and with a cable car added in 1977, Masada is now a popular destination for pilgrims and tourists. Visitors can explore ancient storerooms, palaces, and Roman bathhouses.

Yet, the tragic past of Masada continues to echo. Some visitors report hearing the anguished screams of those who died centuries ago, trying to escape Roman capture. Others claim to see the apparitions of these sorrowful souls, forever bound to the place of their demise.

6 La Noria Ghost Town and Cemetery

Deep in Chile’s Atacama Desert lies the abandoned ghost town of La Noria. Established in 1826, it was once a bustling saltpeter mining town. Thousands lived there, attending the local church, shopping in its stores, and sending their children to the town school.

However, La Noria’s prosperity didn’t last. Competition, a devastating fire in 1901, and the discovery of synthetic saltpeter during World War I led to its decline. Residents began to leave, many abandoning their homes and belongings in search of a new life.

After its abandonment, La Noria and its cemetery suffered from looting. Many graves were desecrated, leaving coffins open and human bones exposed. A chilling local legend says that the spirits connected to these disturbed graves grow angry as night falls. They are said to rise and walk towards the desolate ghost town in a silent, eerie protest. Visitors to the ruins have reported witnessing this ghostly procession and hearing disembodied screams and voices echoing through the empty buildings.

5 Hotel Union Øye

In the picturesque village of Øye, Norway, nestled within the Sunnmøre Alps, stands the Hotel Union Øye. Considered one of Europe’s most beautiful hotels, it has welcomed many famous guests, including Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, King Haakon VII of Norway, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The hotel is also known for its Blue Room and a tragic love story from the 1800s. A young servant girl named Linda and a German officer fell in love. The officer was married, and when his wife refused a divorce, he tragically killed himself. Heartbroken, Linda went to the nearby fjord and drowned herself.

Guests staying at the Hotel Union Øye, particularly in the Blue Room, have reported hearing loud sobbing. Some have even woken up to see Linda’s ghost sitting in their room. For those brave enough to seek a ghostly encounter, the hotel offers a unique tradition: if you wish to avoid Linda, keep a silver bowl of garlic in your room. If you’re up for an adventure, leave it outside your door.

4 Village of Ghostly Voices

In 1790, Obadiah Higginbotham and Johnathan Randall moved their families from Rhode Island to the wooded Ragged Hills area of Pomfret, Connecticut. They named their new settlement Bara-Hack, meaning “breaking of bread,” to honor their Welsh heritage.

The two men started a company called Higginbotham Linen Wheels, supplying flax spinning tools to nearby areas. Bara-Hack grew into a proper village with a mill, waterwheel, large homes, slave quarters, and a cemetery. However, after the founding families passed away, the village was gradually abandoned. By the start of the Civil War, no one lived there.

Over the following years, Bara-Hack became a hotspot for paranormal investigations. Those who dared to visit at night reported seeing a baby’s ghost and a floating bearded face in the cemetery. People also heard the sounds of horse-drawn buggies and long-dead farm animals echoing in the darkness. Now known as the “village of ghostly voices,” Bara-Hack is on private property and currently closed to the public.

3 Pousada Serra da Estrela

The Pousada Serra da Estrela is a magnificent 5-star hotel in Portugal, offering luxurious stays and stunning views of the Serra da Estrela mountain range. However, this beautiful destination has a somber past.

Constructed in 1936, the building originally served as a treatment facility for railway workers suffering from incurable illnesses. It was later leased to the Portugal society of sanatoriums and became a care center for many patients. Sadly, by 1980, most of these patients had passed away, and the sanatorium closed its doors. Soon after, rumors began to spread about the restless souls of former patients haunting the building.

These ghostly tales persist today. Hotel guests have reported unsettling experiences, including seeing the spirits of those who died from tuberculosis wandering the elegant halls and corridors during the night.

2 Witkowice Forest

Poland is famous for its beautiful cities, historic castles, and, unfortunately, the grim reminder of Auschwitz. Visitors often enjoy warm hospitality, delicious food, and great vodka. But Poland also has a darker, creepier side, with several haunted locations.

Beyond haunted buildings like the Skull Chapel or the Wieliczka Salt Mine, the Witkowice Forest near Krakow is notorious for strange happenings. In 2001, a story emerged about nine local students who planned an overnight trip into the forest. Around 8:30 PM, they reportedly met an old man who warned them against entering. The students ignored his warning and ventured into the woods, never to be seen again.

It’s rumored that friends of the missing students conducted their own search, as police were supposedly hesitant to investigate. They allegedly found a camera belonging to the students. The developed photos showed blurred images of the students in a thick mist. The friends also discovered that the Witkowice area had once been the site of a massive fire, and many locals had died in the forest under mysterious circumstances. This story, often compared to The Blair Witch Project, continues to fuel rumors that a forest deity, shrouded in green mist, was responsible for the students’ disappearance.

1 Obvodny Canal

The Obvodny Canal is the longest canal in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Dug between the late 1700s and early 1800s, it eventually became too shallow for large boats. Today, only small vessels use it, and it has earned a chilling reputation for being haunted. The concrete-lined waterway is infamously known as the “Suicide Canal” due to the high number of suicides and attempted suicides that occur there.

Survivors of suicide attempts often describe an unseen force pulling them into the water. Some even claim to have seen a woman in white floating beneath the surface, only to vanish in an instant.

During the canal’s initial construction in the late 18th century, workers frequently complained of severe headaches and sudden, unexplainable violent outbursts. Some believe a curse afflicted them because the canal’s path cut through an ancient pagan burial ground. It’s no surprise that the Obvodny Canal is still considered one of Russia’s most haunted places.
