10. Sky-High Temperatures & World Records

Death Valley temperature reaches highest level ever recorded since 1931

Death Valley’s reputation for blistering heat is legendary. On July 10, 1913, Furnace Creek recorded an astounding 134°F (57°C), a figure that still stands as the official highest air temperature ever noted globally. While some debate the accuracy of this historic measurement, Death Valley consistently reaffirms its fiery status. More recently, on August 16, 2020, temperatures at the visitor center soared to 129.9°F (54.4°C). Almost a year later, it hit a scorching 130°F (54.4°C). Imagine a place where the average monthly temperature in June 2021, day and night, was 102.8°F (39.3°C)!

9. Desert Tsunamis and Far-Reaching Earthquakes

VIDEO: Earthquake caught on camera that monitors Devils Hole pupfish

Deep within Nye County lies Devil’s Hole, a water-filled cavern that’s a detached part of Death Valley National Monument. This a geothermal pool was specifically protected in 1952 to safeguard its unique inhabitant: the ancient Devil’s Hole pupfish, found nowhere else on Earth. Beyond its rare fish, Devil’s Hole possesses an extraordinary secret: it acts as a barometer for seismic events across the globe. Major earthquakes in distant lands like Japan, Indonesia, and Chile have caused the water in Devil’s Hole to slosh dramatically, like water in a bathtub. Waves have reportedly surged up to 6.5 feet (2 meters) high, effectively creating mini-tsunamis in the heart of the desert.

8. Echoes of the Past: Death Valley’s Ghost Towns

Ghost Towns: Panamint City

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the promise of gold and silver lured many to Death Valley, leading to the rise of numerous mining towns. However, few of these settlements were built to last. Some, like Chloride City, vanished in barely a year, leaving behind only faint traces like tin buildings and cement foundations. Others have disappeared entirely. Panamint City stands as one of the most notorious examples. Founded by outlaws who struck silver in the Panamint Mountains, it boasted a population of 2,000 in 1874. Yet, the silver rush was short-lived, and by 1876, a flash flood wiped the town off the map.

7. The Enigma of the Sailing Stones

99 Years Later... We Solved It

Racetrack Playa, a vast, flat expanse, hosts one of Death Valley’s most baffling phenomena: rocks that seemingly move on their own. These “sailing stones” range from a few ounces to hundreds of pounds. While no one has directly witnessed their movement, the distinct trails they leave behind and their changing positions over time confirm their mysterious journeys. For years, this puzzled scientists and visitors alike. However, in 2014, researchers using time-lapse photography finally captured the stones in motion. The secret? A thin layer of rainwater freezes and forms ice sheets behind the stones. Light winds then propel these ice-encased rocks slowly across the playa.

6. North America’s Lowest Point

Badwater Basin, Death Valley National Park. The Lowest Elevation in The Western Hemisphere! Hot too!

Adding to its list of superlatives, Death Valley is home to Badwater Basin, the lowest point of elevation in North America, sitting at an impressive 282 feet (86 meters) below sea level. This area was once the site of an ancient lake. Today, vast salt flats stretch over 200 square miles (518 square kilometers), creating a stark and otherworldly landscape. Though the lake has long since evaporated, a small spring-fed pool remains near a boardwalk. Legend says Badwater Basin earned its name when a prospector’s mule refused to drink from the pool – understandable, given its extreme salinity.

5. A Name Born from Hardship

WHY DEATH VALLEY? (How Death Valley got its name)

Considering the valley’s harsh, arid environment, its ominous name might seem self-explanatory. However, there’s a compelling true story behind it. In the winter of 1849-1850, a group of pioneers, later known as the Lost ’49ers, became hopelessly lost after taking a supposed shortcut off the Old Spanish Trail to California. They endured a terrible ordeal, nearly dying of thirst before a timely snowstorm provided life-saving water. Miraculously, only one of their party perished during their trek through the valley, largely thanks to the scouting skills of two young men, William Lewis Manly and John Rogers. As the survivors finally climbed out of the western mountains, one of them reportedly turned back and said, “Goodbye, Death Valley,” and the name stuck.

4. A Surprising Abundance of Life

Animals Planet + Death Valley

One might assume that a place named Death Valley would be devoid of life. Yet, contrary to its forbidding name, it’s teeming with diverse flora and fauna. Wildlife includes coyotes, roadrunners, bobcats, desert bighorn sheep, lizards, various toads, and even hardy desert tortoises. Several bird and bat species also call it home, alongside creatures endemic to the area, like the previously mentioned pupfish and unique varieties of beetles and snails. While sand dunes are present, they constitute only a small part of Death Valley. The landscape also features snow-capped peaks, rugged canyons, and surprisingly, open meadows. In years with sufficient rainfall, spring triggers spectacular wildflower blooms, transforming arid hills into vibrant carpets of gold, purple, pink, and white flowers.

3. A Galaxy Far, Far Away… Filmed Here

The Original STAR WARS Filming Locations in California - Death Valley - Randomland!

Star Wars might be set in a distant galaxy, but several iconic scenes from the original trilogy were filmed right in Death Valley. The park’s unique canyons and arid vistas provided the perfect otherworldly backdrop for scenes on the desert planet Tatooine, Luke Skywalker’s home. Specifically, parts of Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) and Return of the Jedi (1983) were shot here. For devoted fans, many of these filming locations remain remarkably unchanged today. This has led to fan-created tours and pilgrimages, offering a chance to step into the Star Wars universe.

2. The Ubehebe Crater’s Explosive Past

UBEHEBE CRATER at Death Valley - California

The Ubehebe Crater is a massive volcanic crater, measuring about 600 feet (183 meters) deep and half a mile (0.8 kilometers) wide. Geologists believe it may have formed as recently as 2,000 years ago. For the Timbisha Shoshone people, the crater is known as “Tem-pin-tta Wo’sah” and is a significant cultural site. It’s also a stunning spot to visit, especially at sunset when the fading light accentuates the colorful rock layers. Craters like Ubehebe are the result of Maar volcanoes. These occur when hot magma rising from below encounters groundwater. The intense heat flashes the water into steam, which builds immense pressure until it violently erupts through the earth’s surface.

1. The Curious Tale of Scotty’s Castle

01-09-2020 A Look at the Storied History of Scotty's Castle

One of Death Valley National Park’s most famous landmarks is Scotty’s Castle, an elaborate two-story Spanish-style villa nestled in Grapevine Canyon. Despite its name, it isn’t actually a castle, nor was it ever owned by “Scotty.” The impressive 32,000-square-foot mansion was built in 1927 by Albert Mussey Johnson, a wealthy Chicago insurance executive. Johnson was friends with Walter E. Scott, better known as “Death Valley Scotty,” a charismatic con artist and hustler. Scotty lived at the property and skillfully spun tales to convince everyone that he had built it with gold from a secret mine. Johnson even had to legally defend his ownership against people Scotty had swindled. In 2015, a devastating flash flood severely damaged the castle. Now owned by the National Park Service, it is undergoing extensive renovations with plans to reopen to the public.

Death Valley is far more than just a barren desert. It’s a land of incredible extremes, fascinating geological wonders, surprising resilience, and captivating human stories. Each visit offers a new layer to uncover, proving that even in the most seemingly inhospitable places, life and mystery thrive.
