10. Hiding the Camera in Enter the Dragon

Bruce Lee’s 1973 classic, Enter the Dragon, is a martial arts masterpiece, and its mirror room fight scene is legendary. Lee faces off against Han, surrounded by countless reflections. But how do you film in a room full of mirrors without the camera showing up?

Director Robert Clouse envisioned the mirror room, and cinematographer Gil Hubbs devised a clever solution. They constructed a special “closet” with mirrors on its exterior. A small hole allowed the camera, operated by Hubbs and an assistant from inside, to capture the action. Hubbs recalled the disorienting experience, saying he “actually got nauseous in the room.” Even the legendary Bruce Lee wasn’t immune to the confusing environment, reportedly banging “himself into the mirrors a whole bunch.”

9. Engineering the Power Loader for Aliens

In James Cameron’s Aliens (1986), Ripley’s climactic battle with the Alien Queen is made possible by the mighty Power Loader. This iconic piece of machinery wasn’t just a cool prop; it was a significant practical effect challenge, designed by Cameron himself.

Practical effects supervisor John Richardson described building the Power Loader as the “most challenging thing in the movie,” especially with a tight three-month deadline. Stuntman John Lees operated it, cleverly hidden directly behind Sigourney Weaver. Due to its size, the Loader also needed support from overhead wires and a rear pole arm. Weaver and Lees had to achieve perfect synchronization, rehearsing daily during lunch breaks. Weaver likened their practice sessions to walking “the Power Loader around in a sort of ring somewhere in the studio, like a horse going through its motions.” Now that’s dedication!

8. Martial Arts Homages in Kill Bill

Quentin Tarantino is famous for his cinematic tributes, and Kill Bill (2003 & 2004) is a prime example. The Bride’s epic showdown against the Crazy 88 gang is a love letter to martial arts cinema.

The Bride’s iconic yellow tracksuit? A direct nod to Bruce Lee’s outfit in Game of Death (1978). The gang surrounding her, then recoiling in fear? That mirrors a scene from Lee’s Fist of Fury (1972). Other visual cues include an eye-pluck inspired by Five Fingers of Death (1972) and a vertical bisection from Ichi the Killer (2001). Even the silhouette fight against a blue background was influenced by Samurai Fiction (1998). Tarantino also adopted “the Chinese Way” for effects, using condoms filled with fake blood instead of CGI. To navigate potential censorship for the fight’s goriness, he switched a segment to black and white, a technique used on Asian television in the ’70s and ’80s to air bloody kung fu scenes uncut.

7. Rocky’s Originally Downbeat Ending

The end of Rocky (1976) is pure cinematic triumph: Rocky Balboa loses to Apollo Creed but wins in life, proving he can go the distance, culminating in a joyous embrace with Adrian in the ring. But this wasn’t the original plan.

The initial ending filmed was far more somber, showing Rocky and Adrian quietly exiting through a litter-strewn tunnel. The film’s famous poster, with them holding hands, is actually from this unused footage. Producer Irwin Winkler noted that while test audiences cheered wildly for the fight, their excitement “suddenly dipped down to a real low” with the original ending. The studio wasn’t keen on paying for a reshoot, so Winkler and fellow producer Bob Chartoff personally funded the $25,000 needed to film the uplifting scene we all know and love today.

6. The Spiritual Score of “Duel of the Fates” in The Phantom Menace

The lightsaber battle between Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999) is a standout moment in the prequel trilogy. Beyond the impressive choreography and Maul’s intimidating double-bladed lightsaber, John Williams’s score, “Duel of the Fates,” elevates the scene to epic status.

The powerful choral lyrics are a Sanskrit translation of a section from “Cad Goddeu” (“Battle of the Trees”), a medieval Welsh poem. Williams explained his intent: “I wanted the score to sound religious or have a religiosity to it so that you felt that you were watching a ritual.” He saw the fight not just as action, but as a ritualistic clash between good and evil, making his music “some support to a spiritual contest” rather than typical fight accompaniment.

5. The Groundbreaking Bullet Time in The Matrix

When The Matrix hit theaters in 1999, it didn’t just blow minds with its story; it revolutionized visual effects with “bullet time.” This wasn’t simple slow motion. Bullet time involves the camera appearing to move at normal speed through a scene while the action *within* the scene unfolds in super slow motion.

To achieve this iconic effect, visual effects supervisor John Gaeta and his team first created computer simulations to plan camera placements. For the famous rooftop scene where Neo arches backward to dodge bullets, a staggering 120 still cameras and two film cameras were used. Keanu Reeves performed the stunt on wires against a green screen as the cameras fired in sequence. Afterwards, a process called interpolation added extra frames and smoothed the images together, creating that fluid, physics-bending look that perfectly matched the film’s kung fu action and reality-warping themes.

4. Wrestling’s Stamp on They Live

For his 1988 sci-fi satire They Live, director John Carpenter needed a lead who looked like he’d lived a tough life. A wrestling fan, Carpenter found his man in “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. “Unlike most Hollywood actors, Roddy has life written all over him,” Carpenter explained. This wrestling connection deeply influenced the film’s memorable six-minute alley fight between Piper’s character, Nada, and his friend Frank (Keith David).

While stunt choreographer Jeff Imada had creative freedom, Carpenter specifically requested “three wrestling moves: A suplex, a clothesline, and a sidewalk slam.” Capitalizing on Piper’s wrestling prowess was a no-brainer for Carpenter. Piper brought a gritty realism to the brawl, with co-star Keith David praising, “No one could sell giving or taking a punch better than him.”

3. Keanu’s Daring Horse Stunts in John Wick 3

Keanu Reeves is renowned for performing a high percentage of his own stunts, and the John Wick franchise takes this to another level. For John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019), director Chad Stahelski (Reeves’s stunt double on The Matrix films) wanted to incorporate horses. Reeves suggested a stable fight, and Stahelski upped the ante: “F*ck it, he’s gonna get on a horse because Keanu said he can ride a horse.”

The resulting sequences are incredible, featuring horses used as weapons and a breathtaking chase through New York City streets. Reeves committed to learning trick-riding, which involved galloping at speed, hanging off the horse’s side, and smoothly remounting. Though attached to a safety harness during training and filming, the stunt was undeniably dangerous, showcasing Reeves’s incredible dedication to his action hero role.

2. The Grueling Single Take in Oldboy

Park Chan-wook’s 2003 masterpiece, Oldboy, features an unforgettable corridor fight where Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) single-handedly takes on numerous henchmen with a hammer. Originally, this was planned to be shot with typical cuts and various angles. However, on set, Park made the bold decision to film it in one continuous take.

This single-shot approach lends incredible realism and intensity to the scene, but it was utterly exhausting for Choi Min-sik. Martial arts choreographer Yang Kil-yong stated the scene contained “60 to 70 moves” and that Choi “was so tired, he could barely stand. He was about to drop dead.” Choi himself admitted, “after doing over ten takes, I started getting nauseous. That crafty director waited until I actually got tired. So we did 16 or 17 takes.” The only piece of movie magic added later was a CGI knife in Dae-su’s back.

1. The Real Risks of The Raid

The Raid (2011) is a relentless action powerhouse, starring Iko Uwais as a rookie cop battling his way through an apartment block controlled by a crime lord. Uwais, a skilled martial artist who co-choreographed the fights with his Silat teacher Yayan Ruhian, delivers countless convincing hits. But some of that realism? It was very, very real.

Director Gareth Evans shared that during one scene, Uwais and his sparring partner mutually decided to land full-force blows: “They’re just beating the crap out of each other because they’ve worked on a previous film together, and they know their limits.” Not all the intense moments were planned, however. In a stabbing stunt using chest padding and a retractable knife, the padding slipped, and the stuntman was hit so hard he struggled to breathe. Even more alarmingly, during a scene where a character is thrown over a balcony to break their back on the floor below, a miscalculated wire-pull caused the stuntman to smash his head into a wall. He then lost his balance, let go of the wire, and fell 16 feet onto concrete, missing the crash mats. Evans confessed, “We figured he must be dead.” Miraculously, unlike his character, the stuntman survived.
