90s One-Hit Wonders: Where Are They Now? 10 Fates Revealed
SHARE

The 1990s gifted us a treasure trove of unforgettable one-hit wonders. While the 80s had its share of fleeting stars with iconic hair and synths, the 90s ushered in an era of grunge, punk, and retro rock. Flannel shirts were abundant, guitar riffs echoed, and moody lyrics about love gone wrong filled the airwaves.

10 Natalie Imbruglia9 Semisonic8 Lou Bega7 Chumbawamba6 House of Pain5 Tal Bachman4 Marcy Playground3 New Radicals2 Sixpence None the Richer1 The Verve

Legendary bands like Pearl Jam became household names and still hold a dear place in the hearts of many who grew up in the 90s. Hootie and the Blowfish soared to global fame with a single incredible album. Countless other artists dominated radio, played to packed stadiums, and earned fortunes.

But what about those artists who only briefly touched fame? The 90s saw many one-hit wonders skyrocket up the charts, enjoy a few weeks in the spotlight, and then fade away. Unfortunately, these musicians couldn’t replicate their initial success. The music industry was tough, and without a strong follow-up, many artists disappeared after their first big hit.

This list explores what happened to ten one-hit wonders from the 1990s. You might not have thought about these artists or their catchy songs in years. Prepare for a trip down memory lane that also sheds light on life after the limelight.

10 Natalie Imbruglia

Natalie Imbruglia - Torn (Official Video)

It was almost impossible to miss Natalie Imbruglia in the late ’90s, especially if you were nursing a broken heart! In 1998, her single “Torn” was a radio staple, connecting with love-sick fans recovering from breakups. The Australian actress, with her sweet voice, was also captivating in the music video. At just 22, Imbruglia masterfully delivered the melodrama of the heartbroken lyrics with a touch of angst that made it memorable.

“Torn” soared up the Billboard charts, topping the Adult Pop Airplay chart for over three months. A fantastic debut, surely setting the stage for more hits? Unfortunately, that wasn’t quite how things unfolded for Natalie.

As “Torn” descended the charts after 14 weeks, Imbruglia felt immense pressure from her record company for another hit. Though resilient, the demands of the music industry’s “next big thing” culture were challenging. She released several albums in the early 2000s and continued making music into the 2010s, but no other single matched the impact of “Torn.”

Over time, Imbruglia’s knack for catchy songwriting waned, leading to a severe case of writer’s block. She stepped away in the 2010s to become a mother and refocus. By 2021, she returned with her sixth album, Firebird. Today, she continues to perform and create music, having come to terms with her one-time brush with fame, acknowledging it likely won’t happen again. [1]

9 Semisonic

Semisonic - Closing Time (Official Music Video)

Semisonic burst onto the music scene in 1998 with their infectious single “Closing Time.” While seemingly about leaving a bar, the song had a deeper meaning. Lead singer Dan Wilson was awaiting the birth of his child, and the bar theme was a metaphor for his excitement and anticipation. Most listeners missed this, but they loved the song regardless. The cleverly shot music video, featuring two continuous shots of a missed connection, added to its appeal.

By mid-1998, Semisonic was at the pinnacle of the music world. “Closing Time” topped Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart for over a month, and their album Feeling Strangely Fine received critical acclaim. Yet, follow-up success proved elusive, and Semisonic faded almost as quickly as they appeared.

By the early 2000s, the band members had gone their separate ways, not due to any conflict, but because they pursued other interests. The band’s drummer, a Harvard graduate, left Minneapolis, wrote a book about the music industry, and taught music at a college. Dan Wilson, however, had the most notable post-Semisonic career, transitioning to writing songs for artists like The Chicks, Taylor Swift, and Adele—quite an achievement for a one-hit wonder!

In the 2020s, Semisonic reunited, releasing a new EP in 2020 and playing small shows in Minnesota. In January 2023, they performed a series of sold-out shows in Minneapolis. And in June 2023, they were scheduled for a short tour with 90s favorites Barenaked Ladies. It seems the bar is open again, and “Closing Time” is ready for another round! [2]

8 Lou Bega

Lou Bega - Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit of...)

Lou Bega dominated the music scene in the fall of 1999 with “Mambo No. 5.” The German-born singer delivered a Latin-infused summer anthem right in the middle of winter. The song climbed to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November, after months of global airplay had already made it one of the world’s catchiest tunes.

With names like Monica, Tina, and Erica featured in the single, fans were drawn to its fun and sexy vibe. Bega experienced a level of worldwide attention that surpassed many artists on this list, seemingly paving the way for greater musical success. But it wasn’t to be. Lou Bega never replicated the success of “Mambo No. 5.”

He certainly tried, releasing albums in 2001, 2006, and 2010. However, none of his later work charted like “Mambo No. 5” did just before the new millennium. Yet, Bega embraced the “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade” philosophy.

The singer still tours with his band, creates new music, and delights audiences with his charismatic stage presence. He isn’t bitter about his single brush with fame. By 2019, Lou had accepted his one-hit-wonder status, grateful for the incredible journey it set him on, filled with world travel and music recording. Not a bad outcome for someone who topped the charts just once! [3]

7 Chumbawamba

Chumbawamba - Tubthumping

You couldn’t escape Chumbawamba’s “Tubthumping” on the radio in the late ’90s. This hard-driving rock song hit the airwaves in 1997. Its catchy, repetitive lyrics created the perfect earworm, and soon it was everywhere. Though Chumbawamba seemed to appear out of nowhere, the self-referential track launched them to fame.

By the end of 1997, “Tubthumping” had spent weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number six. It also hit number one on the Pop Songs chart, staying there for over two months. After 15 years of obscurity (the band formed in 1982), this chart-topping success felt amazing. Sadly, they couldn’t repeat it. Despite their memorable name and unique sound, Chumbawamba never had another hit.

However, things didn’t turn out badly for them. In the 15 years after “Tubthumping,” they continued making music but couldn’t recapture their commercial success. In 2012—thirty years after forming and 15 years after their hit single—Chumbawamba disbanded.

There was no drama; the musicians simply felt it was time for new ventures. One such venture might be a film. Reports suggest former lead singer Dunstan Bruce has been working on a documentary about the group and its singular chart success. There’s no release date yet, but nostalgic 90s kids would undoubtedly love to see it. [4]

6 House of Pain

House of Pain - Jump Around (Official Music Video)

House of Pain rode a party anthem to the top of the American charts in 1992. Their single “Jump Around” evoked feelings of good times and wild parties. High school and college students loved the energetic song so much that it reached the third spot on the American singles charts.

The group’s Irish flair made it an Irish-American anthem. Hooligans and sports fans worldwide embraced the track’s positive yet intense message. Even today, “Jump Around” is a staple at sports bars and events globally. But for House of Pain, it was their only successful single.

The three members had interesting futures after their brief success. They tried to replicate their hit sound, but new albums in 1994 and 1996 failed to gain traction. By the late 1990s, DJ Lethal, Danny Boy, and Everlast parted ways. Everlast found success as a solo artist, releasing several singles in the late 1990s and early 2000s that received decent radio play.

DJ Lethal also found success by joining Limp Bizkit and riding their wave to the top with Fred Durst. Sadly, Danny Boy struggled, battling drug addiction for over a decade after House of Pain’s success. He got clean in 2005, but his musical aspirations had largely faded.

The trio has reunited occasionally, playing shows and giving fans that nostalgic feeling. All three even joined the hip-hop supergroup La Coka Nostra for a time. But nothing has ever matched the sweet success “Jump Around” brought them in the early 90s. [5]

5 Tal Bachman

Tal Bachman - She's So High (Official Video)

By the late 1990s, grunge was fading, replaced by a more optimistic pop-rock sound. The new millennium was approaching, and musical acts were hopeful. Canadian singer Tal Bachman captured this vibe in September 1999 with “She’s So High.” This catchy tune hit number one on Billboard’s Adult Pop Airplay chart that fall and stayed there for weeks.

On the main Billboard Hot 100 chart, Bachman’s song reached number 14. He demonstrated his ability to cross over from adult contemporary to pop with the upbeat, easygoing track. His memorable and fun music videos also helped. But somewhere along the line, Tal’s career stalled. He never replicated the success of “She’s So High.”

It didn’t help that his follow-up album took years to produce, not released until 2004—five years after “She’s So High” charted. By then, many fans had moved on to other pop-friendly acts. So, it wasn’t surprising, even to Bachman, that his future music didn’t achieve critical acclaim or sales success. Yet, two decades later, Tal made a viral comeback!

In 2019, Peloton released a memorable holiday ad featuring a young mom using one of their stationary bikes, and it heavily sampled Bachman’s 20-year-old song! The ad went viral, bringing Bachman back into the public eye. He took the renewed fame in stride and reportedly even discussed producing a series for Netflix. So perhaps, more than twenty years after “She’s So High,” there’s still a future for him. [6]

4 Marcy Playground

Marcy Playground - Sex & Candy (Official Music Video)

Who doesn’t remember “Sex and Candy”? Even if you weren’t a 90s kid, Marcy Playground’s sultry, deep-voiced track was suggestive, sexy, and unforgettable. The peculiar lyrics of the 1998 single also contributed to its allure. Phrases like “smell sex and candy” and “disco lemonade” made listeners curious. And for much of late 1997 and early 1998, music fans were hooked!

Marcy Playground topped the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart by the end of 1997. In early 1998, they reached number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. A one-hit wonder spanning two years—not bad! The band leveraged their hit into a touring gig within the post-grunge scene, hitting the road with acts like Fastball, Everclear, and Toad the Wet Sprocket.

Unfortunately, there was no follow-up to “Sex and Candy.” Fans who had been crazy about the initial hit were indifferent to the group’s subsequent attempts. Singles like “Sherry Fraser” and “Saint Joe on the School Bus” struggled for radio airplay. The band also felt burned out by their sole success.

Lead singer John Wozniak recalled how public demands regarding the single overshadowed the band’s enjoyment. “It just got to the point where it was too overwhelming,” he said in an interview years later.

To their credit, Marcy Playground has been resilient. They’ve released four full-length studio albums since their late 90s debut and continue to tour. While not headlining the same venues, the gigs are still good, and people still pay to hear them play. Not a bad life, all things considered. [7]

3 New Radicals

New Radicals - You Get What You Give (Official Music Video)

The New Radicals struck gold with “poptimism” in 1998 when they released the alt-pop single “You Get What You Give.” The song was unique for its time, being anti-commercial, anti-corporate, and unapologetically critical of other 90s stars—just ask Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson, who were called out in the catchy tune.

The song was so fun that major musicians like Joni Mitchell and U2’s The Edge openly praised it. Frontman Gregg Alexander’s captivating performance in the memorable music video also helped. At a time when MTV was a staple for teens, the New Radicals burst onto the scene and seemed destined for a long run. Other songs from their debut album didn’t chart as well but were praised by fans and critics.

But just as success took hold, it all ended. In July 1999—less than a year after “You Get What You Give” topped the airwaves—Alexander abruptly broke up the group. He told media outlets he’d become disenchanted with the corporate side of music and found celebrity life empty and soulless. While his points were valid, the sudden end was a shock for early fans.

However, there’s a meaningful postscript. In 2021, Alexander and the New Radicals reunited after 22 years to play “You Get What You Give” at U.S. President Joe Biden’s inauguration. The moment was particularly poignant: Biden’s late son Beau loved the song and played it to rally himself and his family while battling glioblastoma. Alexander honored Beau’s memory and his father’s achievement with a moving performance. [8]

2 Sixpence None the Richer

Sixpence None The Richer - Kiss Me (Official Music Video)

While many one-hit wonders on this list are rock or hip-hop, Sixpence None the Richer offers a different flavor. In late 1998, the female-led group released the folk-rock single “Kiss Me.” For the next couple of years, it played at every high school dance and prom across America. It also became a fixture in TV shows capturing teen angst and romantic drama, not to mention countless kiss cams at sporting events.

The group’s sweet single wasn’t just for love-struck teenagers. Billboard Magazine named it one of the best songs of 1999. It climbed the charts throughout that year, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Plus, “Kiss Me” earned Sixpence None the Richer a Grammy nomination—something none of the previous artists on this list can claim. Surely, this meant they had made it, right?

Well, perhaps not. Despite their sweet sound and gorgeous lead singer Leigh Nash, sustained success eluded them. They released covers of “There She Goes” and “Don’t Dream It’s Over” as follow-up singles. Fans liked them, but they weren’t original.

When it came time for an original follow-up, nothing materialized. To their credit, they quickly released a second album in 2001, but critics paid little attention, and a few years later, the group disbanded. Nash and the band members focused on solo projects. Nostalgia led to a regrouping in the late 2000s.

However, hit singles weren’t forthcoming. Even though Sixpence released albums in 2008 and 2012, they never found commercial success again. Still, “Kiss Me” will forever be remembered as one of the sweetest songs of the 90s. [9]

1 The Verve

The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony

Let’s save arguably the most interesting for last. The Verve might be one of the most compelling one-hit wonders of the 1990s. The group—not to be confused with The Verve Pipe, another fleeting star of that era—gained prominence in 1998. They achieved massive success that year with the memorable, violin-laden track “Bitter Sweet Symphony,” which was a hit on two continents.

First, the United Kingdom went wild for lead singer Richard Ashcroft and his band. Then, Americans joined in. Like Sixpence None the Richer, The Verve received a Grammy nod for their catchy single. Ashcroft’s notorious sidewalk swagger in the music video became one of the decade’s most memorable music-related images, turning the global hit and its unique video into an early meme.

But The Verve’s success was truly “bittersweet.” Ashcroft broke up the group in 1999—their second split. They reunited in 2007, only to break up again two years later. These disjointed relationships meant no coherent follow-up singles could gain traction. Soon, “Bitter Sweet Symphony” was destined for the one-hit wonder category. But its story didn’t end there.

The Rolling Stones sued The Verve for sampling their music. For a time, Ashcroft and the band lost royalties and publishing rights. However, in 2019, the Stones dropped their suit, and Ashcroft regained ownership. Still, a Verve reunion doesn’t seem likely. Today, some former band members reportedly don’t even speak to each other. [10]

The 90s were a vibrant time for music, producing hits that still resonate today. While these artists may have only had one major chart-topper, their songs left an indelible mark on the decade and on the memories of those who grew up listening to them. Their stories remind us that fame can be fleeting, but a great song can last forever.
