10. The Enigmatic Murder Of Julia Wallace

Gloomy street scene representing the Julia Wallace murder mystery

Julia Wallace was an ordinary housewife living in Liverpool, England. Her life took a dark turn on January 19, 1931. Her husband, William, went to his usual chess club meeting. Upon arrival, he received a strange message from a man calling himself ‘Qualtrough’. This unknown person asked William to visit an address: 25 Menlove Gardens East.

The next day, William set out to find this address, leaving Julia at home. After a frustrating hour searching for a non-existent location, he returned home. What he found was horrific: Julia lay brutally murdered in their parlor. Suspicion quickly fell on William. The police believed he faked the phone message, especially since the call came from a phone booth near his chess club. Despite largely circumstantial evidence, William was convicted and sentenced to death.

However, his case went to the Court of Criminal Appeal, which rarely overturned jury verdicts. In a surprising move, the Court freed William. To this day, the true killer of Julia Wallace has never been found, making it a perfect, albeit tragic, unsolved crime.

9. The Mysterious Big Grey Man Of Ben MacDhui

Brocken spectre optical illusion on a misty mountain, often linked to the Big Grey Man

Deep in the Scottish Highlands, on Ben MacDhui, the largest peak in the Cairngorm Mountains, a creature known as Am Fear Liath Mor, or the Big Grey Man, is said to roam. This legend, similar to stories of Bigfoot or the Yeti, gained wider attention in 1889. Professor Norman Collie, a respected scientist, had a chilling experience there.

He didn’t actually see the Grey Man, but he described hearing unsettling sounds: “I heard something else other than my own footsteps. For every few steps I took I heard a crunch and then another crunch as if someone was walking after me but taking footsteps three or four times the length of my own.” Other climbers and walkers have since reported similar eerie encounters. Some claim to have seen a large, shadowy figure in the mist. One naturalist even said he fired his pistol at a figure that charged him.

A scientific explanation often proposed is the “Brocken spectre.” This is an optical illusion where your own shadow is cast onto clouds, appearing magnified. While this might explain some sightings, it doesn’t account for the distinct sound of giant footsteps following people.

8. The Perplexing Hessdalen Lights

Mysterious glowing Hessdalen Lights in the Norwegian night sky

In the remote Hessdalen Valley in central Norway, strange lights have been appearing for centuries, with records dating back to 1811. The phenomenon became especially active in the early 1980s, with as many as 20 reports a week. Though less frequent now, these lights still appear 10 to 20 times a year. They are typically described as bright white or yellow lights that hover silently above the ground, sometimes moving at incredible speeds.

Numerous scientific investigations have tried to determine the cause of the Hessdalen Lights. Cameras are even set up in the valley to automatically photograph any bright occurrences. Despite these efforts, no single, conclusive explanation has been found. Skeptics suggest car headlights or atmospheric mirages, but researchers admit these explanations don’t cover all the reported sightings, especially the more unusual movements and characteristics of the lights.

7. The Great Amherst Mystery Haunting

Old, supposedly haunted house representing the Great Amherst Mystery

During the late 1800s, in the small town of Amherst, Nova Scotia, a young woman named Esther Cox became the center of a terrifying series of events. She claimed powerful poltergeists were tormenting her. Esther lived with her sister and her family. The strange occurrences began shortly after Esther survived a violent assault by a male acquaintance who seemed to have a psychotic episode.

The phenomena included objects flying through the air, loud banging noises, and even fires starting inexplicably. After Esther’s health declined, she briefly stayed with another sister in a different province. When she returned to Amherst, the hauntings resumed with a vengeance. The poltergeists allegedly threatened to burn down the house, forcing Esther to move in with another family, whose home then also became haunted. Walter Hubbell, an actor and amateur paranormal investigator, moved in with Esther to study the case. He later wrote a popular book detailing his experiences, claiming to have witnessed objects moving on their own and Esther being physically attacked by unseen forces. While some believe Esther orchestrated the whole thing as an elaborate hoax, no definitive proof either way has ever surfaced.

6. The Baffling Disappearance Of Benjamin Bathurst

Historic European town street, similar to where Benjamin Bathurst vanished

Benjamin Bathurst was a promising young British diplomat in the early 19th century. In 1809, he was returning to Britain after a mission in Austria. To avoid French forces (he had been urging Austria to attack Napoleon), he had to take a dangerous route through Germany, traveling under the alias ‘Koch’ and heavily armed with pistols.

On November 25th, Bathurst and his German aide, Herr Krause, stopped at an inn in the small town of Perleberg for a short rest. When it was time to leave, Bathurst walked out of the inn’s door to check on their horses. Krause followed just seconds later. But when Krause stepped outside, Bathurst was gone. He had vanished into thin air, never to be seen or heard from again.

A massive search was launched. Bathurst’s wife even spent a considerable sum of money hiring investigators and using dogs to scour the area around Perleberg. Some articles of his clothing were found nearby, but his body was never recovered. Theories abound: was he captured by French agents and died in prison? Or did he fall victim to bandits common in Europe at the time? His sudden disappearance remains an enduring puzzle.

5. The Legendary Lost Sublett Mine

Rugged landscape of the Guadalupe Mountains, fabled home of the Lost Sublett Mine

The Guadalupe Mountains, straddling West Texas and Southeastern New Mexico, are rumored to hide some of the richest gold mines in the world. Even the famous Apache leader Geronimo hinted at such treasures. One man, Ben Sublett, a miner from the 19th century, supposedly stumbled upon one such incredibly rich vein of gold. It was said he could extract $10,000 worth of gold (a fortune back then) in just a week from his secret find.

Known locally as a bit of a drunkard and storyteller, Sublett one day walked into his usual tavern, plunked down a handful of gold nuggets, and bought drinks for everyone. Many tried to get him to reveal the mine’s location, and some even attempted to follow him, but Sublett always managed to give them the slip, sometimes with the help of his rifle. Even when his own son asked about the mine, Sublett reportedly told him to find it himself, just as he had. Today, the only supposed trace of his mine is a small hole in the ground, barely big enough for a person. Geologists are skeptical about large gold deposits in the Guadalupes, making the Lost Sublett Mine an enduring legend of the Old West.

4. The Aurora Incident: An Alien Crash?

Artistic rendering of a classic UFO, referencing the Aurora Incident

Aurora, a small, quiet town northwest of Dallas, Texas, holds a rather extraordinary claim to fame. According to local legend, on April 19, 1897, a mysterious cigar-shaped flying object, which had been seen in the skies for weeks prior, crashed near the village. The story goes that the craft hit a windmill on Judge Proctor’s property and exploded, scattering debris. The pilot of the craft, described as “not of this world,” was reportedly killed in the crash.

The tale further claims that the townsfolk gave the alien pilot a “Christian burial” in the local Aurora cemetery. For years, a gravestone marked the supposed burial site, but it was stolen in the 1970s when the story gained national attention and media flocked to the town. The remaining debris from the craft was allegedly thrown down a local well. While UFO enthusiasts point to this as an early Roswell-like event, skeptics believe the story was a hoax, possibly cooked up by locals to generate publicity or, as one theory suggests, to cover up the accidental burning of the judge’s windmill. The truth of the Aurora Incident remains buried with time.

3. The Sinister Black Mausoleum

Eerie and imposing Black Mausoleum in Greyfriars Kirkyard, Edinburgh

In Greyfriars Kirkyard, a historic cemetery in Edinburgh, Scotland, stands the Black Mausoleum. This is the final resting place of Sir George Mackenzie, a 17th-century Lord Advocate. Mackenzie was notorious for his harsh persecution of the Covenanters, a Presbyterian group, earning him the grim nickname “Bloody Mackenzie.” He died in 1691 and was interred in the mausoleum, and for centuries, nothing unusual was reported.

However, starting in 1999, a wave of strange and unsettling occurrences began. Visitors to the graveyard, particularly near Mackenzie’s tomb, reported encountering a malevolent poltergeist. Documented phenomena include sudden cold spots, unexplained bruises, scratches, and burns appearing on visitors’ bodies. Nearly 450 witnesses have reported strange experiences, with over 100 people apparently fainting while on tours of the area. Richard Felix, from the paranormal TV show Most Haunted, has called it “one of the most convincing supernatural cases of all time.” Even after Mackenzie’s tomb was sealed, the alleged attacks continued. While some attribute the events to mass hysteria or psychosomatic reactions, the mystery of the Mackenzie Poltergeist endures.

2. The Elusive Hornet Spook Light

Mysterious orb of light, the Hornet Spook Light, on a dark country road

The Hornet Spook Light, also known by various other names like the Tri-State Spooklight, is a mysterious light phenomenon observed in an area known as the “Devil’s Promenade” spanning parts of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Sightings date back as far as 1866, with some local legends claiming it was first seen by Native Americans on the Trail of Tears.

The light is typically described as a single, basketball-sized orange ball of light that bobs and weaves along a specific 4-mile stretch of gravel road. It can appear suddenly, move erratically at high speeds, and then vanish just as quickly. Thankfully, no one has ever reported being harmed by the light. One popular explanation is that it’s a will-o’-the-wisp – a natural light caused by the decay of organic matter. However, will-o’-the-wisps are not usually so bright or dynamic. Another scientific theory suggests it’s simply the refracted headlights of cars on a distant highway. But this doesn’t explain the sightings that occurred long before automobiles were invented, leaving the Hornet Spook Light as an intriguing local enigma.

1. The Shadowy Death Of Geli Raubal

Geli Raubal and her half-uncle Adolf Hitler, whose relationship is tied to her mysterious death

Angela “Geli” Raubal was a young Austrian woman whose life was tragically cut short on September 18, 1931. Her death was officially ruled a suicide. The gun she supposedly used belonged to her half-uncle, a man who would soon become infamous: Adolf Hitler. Geli, who affectionately called him “Uncle Alfie,” became entangled with Hitler just as his Nazi party was gaining significant power in Germany.

She often traveled with Hitler and eventually moved into his Munich apartment, officially as his housekeeper, though many historians believe their relationship was far more intimate and controlling. Hitler reportedly presented Geli as an ideal Aryan woman, though privately, he was known to be possessive and jealous. Accounts suggest they had a heated argument the night before her death, possibly because Geli wished to go to Vienna to become engaged to another man.

After her death, Hitler’s associates quickly put out the story that Geli shot herself due to nerves about an upcoming music recital – an explanation widely seen as flimsy. No suicide note was ever found, and there were reports of injuries on her body, including a broken nose, that were inconsistent with a simple suicide. A journalist investigating the suspicious circumstances was arrested by the Nazis shortly before he could publish his findings and was later executed at Dachau. With potential witnesses silenced, the full truth of what happened to Geli Raubal in Hitler’s apartment may forever remain a dark secret.

These tales of the unexplained remind us that not every question has an answer. They tap into our curiosity and, sometimes, our deepest fears. The world is full of shadows and whispers, and these unsolved mysteries are a testament to that enduring enigma.
