Scary or Safe? 10 North American Animal Myths
SHARE

Movies and stories love to make things more exciting, especially when it comes to animals. Sometimes, this makes us think cute critters are dangerous, or truly risky ones are harmless. It’s easy for these ideas to stick. Let’s look at 10 North American animals and see if their scary (or not-so-scary) reputations are really true. You might be surprised by what you learn!

10. American Alligator – Excessively Feared

Why isn’t gator attacking you?!?!

American alligators often star as scary monsters in our minds, like real-life dinosaurs. They look tough with their big, armored bodies and super strong jaws that can crush a turtle shell. Plus, their sharp teeth are always showing! You’ll find them in swampy areas in the South, which adds to their fearsome image.

While they do look intimidating and you shouldn’t get close, alligators are not as dangerous as you might think. They are actually quite shy. If they see a human, they’d much rather swim away than start a fight. So, they’re more likely to be scary in movies than in your backyard.

9. Moose – Not Feared Enough

Moose Attacks Are Increasing

Moose often seem like gentle giants from the cold parts of North America, like Canada and Alaska. They are the biggest members of the deer family, sometimes taller than a grown person and weighing over 1,000 pounds! They are amazing to see.

But don’t let their calm look fool you. Moose can be unpredictable and sometimes aggressive. They cause many serious car accidents. In places like Alaska, moose injure more people each year than bears do. It’s best to admire these huge animals from a safe distance.

8. Black Widow Spider – Excessively Feared

You're WRONG About The Black Widow Spider

The black widow spider, with its shiny black body and red hourglass mark, scares a lot of people. Many think of it when they hear ‘scary spider.’ Their venom is strong, which adds to the fear.

But these spiders are much less of a threat than we think. Black widows are shy and don’t want to bite. They usually only bite if they are squished against your skin. Even if they do bite, it’s very rare for someone to die, especially healthy adults. So, while you should be careful, they aren’t the tiny monsters they’re made out to be.

7. Gila Monster – Not Feared Enough

Gila Monster BITE!

Ever heard of the Gila monster? Even with ‘monster’ in its name, this colorful lizard isn’t famous in movies. But maybe it should be! Growing up to two feet long, this tough creature is one of the few venomous lizards in the world.

Thankfully, its bite probably won’t kill you. However, its venom causes extreme pain and can mess with your nerves in very unpleasant ways. It might be slow, but the Gila monster is definitely an animal you want to avoid.

6. Cougar – Excessively Feared

How to Survive a Cougar Attack

Cougars, also known as mountain lions, are North America’s biggest wild cats. They are powerful hunters that can take down very large animals. They also make a chilling scream that sounds like a person in distress, which can be terrifying.

Because of this, many people think they are extremely dangerous. However, attacks on humans by cougars are very rare, and it’s even rarer for them to be deadly. A child alone might be at risk, but mostly, they are not a big threat to people. It’s wise to keep your distance, but don’t think of them as tigers hunting humans.

5. Alligator Snapping Turtle – Not Feared Enough

CRAZY Alligator Snapping Turtle Bite!

It’s funny that alligators are feared too much, while a turtle named after them isn’t feared enough! Most turtles seem harmless, right? Well, the alligator snapping turtle is different. These creatures look like something from prehistoric times, with heavy armor and a sharp, threatening beak.

They are the largest freshwater turtles around, often weighing about 175 pounds. Some say one found in Kansas weighed a massive 400 pounds! That beak isn’t just for looks; it can bite with enough force to break bones. It might be ‘just a turtle,’ but you wouldn’t want it snapping at you.

4. Bears (Grizzly/Black Bears) – Excessively Feared

Bear facts Just How Dangerous Are They?

Bears often look cute and cuddly, like giant teddy bears. But most people know that cuddling a wild bear is a very bad idea. And they are right – it’s always best to keep your distance from large wild animals with sharp claws and teeth.

That said, bears like grizzlies and black bears are surprisingly gentle. We hear lots of tips on how to survive a bear attack, but most bears want nothing to do with humans. Unless they feel very threatened, are starving, or a person acts in a way that triggers them, they are far more likely to run away than fight. You’re actually more likely to be harmed by a dog or lightning than by these big omnivores.

3. Polar Bear – Not Feared Enough

Wild Polar Bear Tries To Break In - BBC Earth

While most bears are more bark than bite towards humans, polar bears are a big exception. Many of us only see them as cute mascots on soda cans or in cartoons. We might forget that these huge predators live in North America, in northern Alaska and Canada.

Polar bears have paws a foot long and can run faster than any human. Because food is scarce where they live, they have a strong hunting drive. It’s lucky that most of us will never meet one in the wild. Sadly, their icy home is melting, which is a real threat to these amazing animals.

2. Brown Recluse Spider – Excessively Feared

You're WRONG About The Brown Recluse Spider

The brown recluse spider has a scary reputation, maybe even more so than the black widow. A big problem is that people often mistake other brown spiders for a brown recluse. Not many look for the key violin-shaped mark on its back.

Even if it is a real brown recluse, they are less dangerous than many think. Their bite can sometimes cause nasty skin damage, and the pictures look awful. But these serious reactions are not common, and deaths are very rare, especially in healthy adults. Plus, as their name suggests, brown recluses are very shy and prefer to hide. Getting one to bite you is actually quite difficult!

1. White-Tailed Deer – Not Feared Enough

How to Avoid a Deer Strike | Consumer Reports

When we think of white-tailed deer, we often picture cute scenes from movies. They are indeed beautiful and graceful animals. Fawns with their white spots are especially adorable. Most people think of them as harmless and friendly.

And for the most part, that’s true. Adult male deer (bucks) can be defensive with their antlers, but they aren’t usually a direct threat to people. You should still keep your distance. Yet, surprisingly, deer are considered the deadliest animal in the United States. Not because they attack people, but because they cause about 1.5 million car accidents each year, leading to around 150 human deaths. They aren’t scary in the usual way, but on our roads, they pose a significant risk.

It’s clear that what we often believe about certain animals isn’t always the full story. From the alligator that’s more shy than scary, to the deer that’s surprisingly dangerous on the roads, our perceptions can be skewed. Taking the time to learn the truth helps us appreciate and respect these creatures for what they really are, not just what we’ve been told.
