Copyright laws eventually expire, freeing up beloved children’s characters for public use. While some celebrate this creative freedom, others reimagine these characters in ways that are, well, terrifying. Classic childhood figures and fairy tales are being transformed into psychopathic, sadistic, and revenge-seeking murderers, creating a bizarre yet captivating trend in cinematic history. Here are ten morbid examples of childhood favorites gone wrong.

Winnie the Pooh

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey Trailer #1 (2023)

Barely after the copyright expired for A.A. Milne’s honey-loving bear, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey materialized. This 2023 slasher film transforms the sweet Pooh into a snarling, axe-wielding monster. British filmmaker Rhys Frake-Waterfield capitalized on the expired copyright, envisioning a fun, old-fashioned horror flick amidst today’s serious horror offerings.

The plot involves a grown-up Christopher Robin returning to the 100 Acre Wood, only to find Pooh and his friends feral and furious after being abandoned. The trailer’s viral explosion fueled such rage among fans that petitions arose to halt its release. Ironically, the backlash amplified publicity, leading to worldwide screenings. [1]

Bambi

A Bambi horror movie is coming!...have we gone to far

The team behind Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey swiftly seized upon another expired copyright in 2023. Bambi: The Reckoning starkly contrasts Disney’s 1942 classic. Instead of embodying innocence and nature, Bambi transforms into a “vicious killing machine,” according to producer Scott Jeffrey.

While the plot remains under wraps at the time of writing, Jeffrey cites Netflix’s The Ritual as a key inspiration. It’s hard to imagine that Disney or Felix Salten, who created Bambi in his 1923 book Bambi, a Life in the Woods, would endorse this dark, twisted adaptation. [2]

Pinocchio

Brandon's Cult Movie Reviews: PINOCCHIO'S REVENGE

The 1990s foreshadowed the recent wave of horror adaptations with movies like Pinocchio’s Revenge. Released in 1996, its plot echoes the horror classic Child’s Play, questioning whether the doll truly came alive or if it’s a figment of a disturbed child’s imagination.

The child, Zoe, is the daughter of an attorney defending a serial killer. Pinocchio begins as evidence—the murdered son’s favorite toy—and gradually animates as Zoe bonds with him. The pair is present at every terrible crime until people suspect Zoe of murder. [3]

Jack Frost

A Serial Killer Transforms Into An Ugly Snowman And Goes On A Christmas Killing Spree

In 1997, this absurd holiday horror emerged, featuring a convicted serial killer transformed into a genetically modified snowman. Complete with terrible special effects and silly one-liners, the vengeful snowman hunts down his enemies, shooting icicles from his hands. Despite negative reviews, it gained a cult following among those who found it so bad it was good.

Some attribute the film’s cult status to its self-awareness of the ridiculousness of a serial-killing snowman. It doesn’t take itself seriously, appealing to audiences with a similar mindset. [4]

The Gingerbread Man

The Gingerdead Man - The Best Parts

In 2005, the fairy tale about runaway food inspired The Gingerdead Man. In this movie, magical gingerbread dough becomes animated as a sweary and sadistic killer played by Gary Busey, sticking to the horror trope of a serial killer’s soul trapped inside a childish object.

The Gingerdead Man’s victims include bakery staff inexplicably unable to escape, despite having glass windows and a door key. With a nonsensical plot and over-the-top acting, the movie faced harsh criticism but spawned sequels, crossovers, and comic book series. [5]

Humpty Dumpty

THE CURSE OF HUMPTY DUMPTY Official Trailer (2021)

It’s unlikely that all the king’s horses and men could create a sillier horror movie than Scott Jeffrey’s The Curse of Humpty Dumpty. Capitalizing on the rhyme’s ambiguity about Humpty Dumpty being an egg, Jeffrey opts for a killer clown doll with a cracked skull. Two sisters returning to their childhood home with their dementia-suffering mother purchase the doll at an antique shop.

The movie surprisingly delves into family drama, with the doll only killing four people. This positions it more as a psychological drama than a traditional slasher, contrary to the creepy promotional art. [6]

The Little Mermaid

THE LURE | 2017 | Trailer HD

Another classic Disney tale twisted into something darker is The Little Mermaid. Hans Christian Andersen’s source material also inspired the 2015 Polish horror musical The Lure. The movie follows two vampiric mermaids who want to live in America but surface in Warsaw, working as backup singers and strippers at a nightclub.

One falls for a member of the nightclub band, while the other struggles to control her vampiric urges amid a stream of admiring men. Unlike other horror adaptations, The Lure had its international release at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won an award for “unique vision and design.” [7]

The Grinch

The Mean One Trailer #1 (2022)

Stealing Christmas is one thing, but a Christmas-killing spree? Dr. Suess’s green fiend transforms into a bloodthirsty beast in 2022’s The Mean One, angered by a father and daughter flouting a town’s ban on Christmas decorations. David Howard Thornton, known for playing the clown in the Terrifier movies, stars as the gruesome Green One.

The story follows Cindy, a traumatized adult returning to the childhood home where she saw her mother murdered by the furry green monster. She and her father seek closure by selling the house. They discover the town banned Christmas after the murder, blaming Cindy for killing Christmas with her story of a green monster. History repeats itself when they decorate the house. [8]

Santa Claus

Violent Night - Official Trailer

It seems no childhood figure is safe from today’s studio executives. Even Santa received a murderous makeover in 2022, although not as a psychopathic slasher. He became a hard-drinking, hammer-wielding action hero saving a wealthy family from armed thugs led by Scrooge in Violent Night.

The film reimagines Father Christmas as a magical, centuries-old Scandinavian warrior who defeats the gang with blunt force and booby traps set by the family’s seven-year-old daughter. David Harbour of Stranger Things and Hellboy plays this ruthless Santa, whose usual Christmas bender is interrupted by a home invasion in Greenwich, Connecticut. [9]

The Banana Splits

The Banana Splits Movie - Nostalgia Critic

The beloved Hanna Barbera animal band begins butchering their live studio audience when they learn their show has been canceled in this 2019 flick. The film follows a young boy and his mother, who bought him tickets to the taping for his birthday. That day, Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper, and Snorky hear about their show’s cancellation.

The team behind this adaptation found the band’s sunglasses and permanent expressions creepy, making them perfect for horror. They were also inspired by the idea of children trusting anonymous adults in costumes. While amenable to a gory adaptation, some have said that Hanna and Barbera would have hated it, as they preferred feel-good content. [10]

These terrifying adaptations of adored children’s characters reveal a dark side to nostalgia, turning innocence into nightmare fuel. From Winnie the Pooh’s blood-soaked rampage to Santa’s violent justice, these films challenge our perceptions of childhood icons.
