1. Michelina Lewandoska: Buried Alive and Back

Imagine the sheer terror of being buried alive. Michelina Lewandoska, a Polish emigrant in the U.K., lived this nightmare in 2012. She recounted to a British court the horror of lying bound and gagged in a taped-up cardboard box, slowly running out of air. “During my time inside my shallow grave where I was buried alive, I feared that my life was at an end and I was going to die… I prayed to God to help me to survive so that I could look after my young son,” she said. Her fiancé, Marcin Kasprzak, and his friend Patryk Borys, decided to get rid of Michelina. Kasprzak attacked her with a stun gun and, with his friend, bound her before stuffing her into a box and burying her under just four inches of earth and a heavy tree branch.

In a stunning display of resourcefulness, Michelina used her engagement ring to cut herself free. Despite weeks of difficulty walking and breathing, she testified against her attackers, who were sentenced to 20 years in prison. Her story is a testament to the will to survive, even when entombed beneath the earth.

2. Holly Dunn: The Sole Survivor of the Railway Killer

On a late night in August 1997, Holly Dunn and her boyfriend Chris Maier were approached by a stranger asking for money. That man was Angel Resendiz, the infamous “Railway Killer.” At the time, he had already murdered six people and would go on to kill many more.

Resendiz found the couple near some train tracks. He tied them up and brutally attacked Chris with a 50-pound rock, killing him. Holly was then raped, stabbed, and beaten nearly beyond recognition before losing consciousness. Awakening to find her attacker gone, Holly dragged herself to a nearby house and was rushed to the hospital with severe injuries. Despite her trauma, Holly recovered and testified against Resendiz, who was eventually sentenced to death. Angel Resendiz murdered at least 15 people over 13 years. Holly Dunn is his only surviving victim.

3. Alcides Moreno: A 47-Story Fall and Lived

Alcides Moreno and his brother Edgar were seasoned window washers who worked on Manhattan’s towering skyscrapers. In December 2007, the unthinkable happened: the rig they were on disengaged and plummeted 47 stories – almost 500 feet – into an alleyway. Firefighters arrived to find Edgar dead, but Alcides was alive, conscious, and sitting up.

Investigators believe Alcides somehow managed to “ride” the platform to slow his descent. He sustained severe injuries to his spine, brain, and limbs, but he was alive. Doctors were astonished by his survival, noting that falls from three stories are difficult to survive, and above ten stories, patients rarely make it to the hospital alive. Alcides’ recovery was remarkable, and he was making talk show appearances within months. His window-washing days are over, but his survival remains a medical marvel.

4. Ken Henderson and Ed Coen: Stranded at Sea

Longtime friends Ken Henderson and Ed Coen embarked on a fishing trip in the Gulf of Mexico in March 2012 when their 30-foot boat began to sink. Despite attempts to pump the water out, the boat vanished beneath them into the icy water. For over 30 hours, they huddled together, battling fatigue, dehydration, and the bitter cold.

When it became clear that Coen was failing, Henderson made a last-ditch effort to swim toward a distant oil rig. Disoriented and hallucinating, he eventually stumbled aboard the rig and called for help. The Coast Guard discovered Ed Coen’s lifeless body shortly after. Ken Henderson’s bravery saved his own life and allowed Coen’s body to be recovered, marking a tragic yet heroic tale of survival at sea.

5. Richard Moyer: Attacked by a Black Bear in His Home

Richard Moyer’s morning of October 3, 2011, took a terrifying turn when his dog, Brindy, dashed back into the house, followed by a gigantic black bear. The bear stormed into the house after the dog, attacking Richard and waking up his wife, Angela. When Angela tried to intervene, the bear turned on her.

Richard leapt into action. He jumped onto the bear, which only made it angrier. The bear mauled him, even chewing on his head, before inexplicably stopping and sitting on the front porch. Richard required 37 staples to close the wounds on his head. Both Richard and Angela were home from the hospital by the end of the day. Their 10-year-old son slept through the entire ordeal, unaware of the ferocious battle that had unfolded.

6. Felix: Kidnapped and Tortured by a Mexican Drug Cartel

In a region controlled by Mexican drug cartels, a 20-year-old man named Felix was abducted by a police officer and handed over to the Zeta cartel. For a week, he endured beatings and torture while his family was extorted for ransom. He witnessed the brutal deaths of Gulf cartel members and was threatened with the same fate if his family didn’t pay up.

After a couple of months being shuttled between safe houses, Felix was brutally beaten and left for dead on the street. Unlike many others who disappear in Mexico, Felix survived to tell his story. His experience shines a light on the extreme violence and lack of human value demonstrated by the cartels.

7. Bahia Bakari: The Sole Survivor of a Plane Crash into the Indian Ocean

Imagine the horrifying scenario of a plane crash in the middle of the ocean. It’s a nightmare few survive. Yet, 14-year-old Bahia Bakari lived through it when Yemenia Flight 626 plunged into the Indian Ocean around 2 a.m. on June 30, 2009. Bahia was ejected from the plane and, despite not having a life jacket and being a weak swimmer, stayed afloat by clinging to debris from the fuselage.

She heard other voices after the crash, but they eventually faded away, leaving her utterly alone. Nine hours after the crash, she was discovered by a civilian vessel enlisted in the search. Bahia, suffering from fractures, was the only survivor of the 153 people on board. Her resilience in the face of unimaginable tragedy is truly remarkable.

8. Paul Lessard: Trapped in a Freezing Creek for 20 Hours

Paul Lessard, a 64-year-old snowmobiler, found himself in a life-threatening predicament in the Maine wilderness. His snowmobile overturned, pinning his head under its heavy storage rack, with most of his body submerged in a freezing creek. The temperature plummeted as night fell, and Paul faced a desperate fight for survival.

Reported missing, the search was hampered by heavy snow and wind. Temperatures dropped to near zero with the wind chill. After 20 hours trapped in these conditions, Paul was discovered by a search party. Suffering from hypothermia and frostbite, he eventually made a full recovery. His incredible endurance highlights the strength required to survive against the forces of nature.

9. Jake Finkbonner: Survived a Flesh-Eating Bacterial Infection

In February 2006, five-year-old Jake Finkbonner suffered a split lip during a basketball game. The seemingly minor injury turned deadly when the bacteria Strep A entered the wound. Within days, Jake’s parents were told he was unlikely to survive as the infection began to consume his face.

Doctors described the infection as spreading rapidly, like fire across parchment paper. Jake’s family, being Catholic, requested prayers to Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha. Miraculously, the infection slowed and stopped. Countless surgeries were required to restore Jake’s face, but he survived what is often a fatal infection. His recovery is now being considered as the miracle needed for Kateri to be recognized as a saint.

10. Timothy Brown: The First Known Person Cured of AIDS

In the early ’90s, an HIV diagnosis was practically a death sentence. Timothy Brown was diagnosed with HIV in 1995 and later developed leukemia in 2005. Chemotherapy weakened his immune system, and doctors feared it would kill him. Dr. Gero Hutter decided to try a stem cell transplant using a donor with a rare genetic mutation that makes cells resistant to HIV.

The transplant not only cured his leukemia but also eradicated the HIV. Timothy Brown became known as “The Berlin Patient,” the first person known to be cured of HIV. His case offers hope and has transformed the approach to treating HIV.
