After the Nazis infiltrated her network, she traveled to London to work with the Polish government in exile. Zawacka parachuted back into Poland in 1943 and helped organize the Warsaw Uprising. Arrested after the war by the communist government, she was later released and given the rank of brigadier general. She lived to the age of 99.

Yelena Mazanik worked as a maid in the household of Nazi governor Wilhelm Kube in Byelorussia. Resistance fighters tasked her with assassinating Kube. Yelena escaped and survived the war.

7. Elizabeth “Betty” Pack

Elizabeth “Betty” Pack used all available tools, including her charm, to fight the Axis powers. Working as a spy for the British in Washington, D.C., she infiltrated the French embassy representing Vichy France. When caught, they pretended to be engaged in a clandestine affair, securing the codes successfully.

4. Christine Granville

Maria Krystyna Janina Skarbek, later Christina Granville, was a Polish countess who became Britain’s first female agent. She skied over the Alps into Poland, smuggling arms and intelligence. In 1941, the Gestapo arrested Granville and her lover. She convinced the Nazis she had tuberculosis by biting her tongue, leading to their release. Winston Churchill declared her his favorite spy.

3. Pearl Witherington

Pearl Witherington: British spy who fought the Nazis

Pearl Witherington joined Britain’s Special Operations Executive and parachuted into occupied France in 1943. She worked as a courier for a resistance network, posing as a cosmetics saleswoman. When the network’s organizer was captured, Witherington took over, leading 2,600 resistance fighters. Under her leadership, the network killed approximately 1,000 Germans and facilitated the surrender of 18,000 more.
