Lists featuring famous musical instruments often spotlight the musicians who played them. But this list takes a different approach. Here, we’ll showcase ten musical instruments that have fetched the highest prices or are esteemed as the most valuable worldwide. The worth of a musical instrument is interwoven with the compelling narrative behind it.

Contents

Sometimes, the instrument is made by a masterful artisan whose secrets remain elusive. Other times, its value arises from the extraordinary talent of the musician who played it. Another recurring theme is when the instrument is among the last surviving pieces crafted by a renowned manufacturer. Finally, the instrument might have an unbelievable backstory, making it a must-see artifact.

Prepare to learn something new. Many of these instruments remain obscure to the general public, with their stories known mainly to avid fans. Let’s shed light on these ten remarkable musical instruments, most likely worth more than your current car.

Paul McCartney’s $12.6 Million Hofner Bass

The Hofner Beatle Bass: A Short History

Paul McCartney’s 1960 Hofner bass is a legendary instrument. Stolen in 1972, it was presumed lost until its miraculous recovery in late 2023. It’s valued around 10 million British pounds, or $12.6 million U.S. dollars.

The bass disappeared from a van in London but resurfaced decades later when Cathy Guest found it in her attic. Her late husband had inherited it as a film student but was unaware of its significance. The Hofner company authenticated it, and McCartney reportedly rewarded Guest handsomely. Experts are now restoring the bass to its former glory. [1]

Korg’s PS-3300: The $100,000 Synthesizer

THE MOST EXPENSIVE SYNTH KORG MAKES - KORG PS3300

The Korg PS-3300, released in 1977, was a luxury item affordable only to wealthy musicians. It has since become a rare and coveted synthesizer, with one selling for $100,000 in 2021.

Its rarity led to virtual synthesizers emulating its sound. The original PS-3300 was large and featured a semi-modular design with three independent synthesizer units. Bob Moog hailed it as “the best synthesizer for fat sounds.” Cherry Audio meticulously recreated it as a virtual instrument, capturing its unique sonic qualities and adding modern enhancements. [2]

The $73,000 Platinum Flute

The William S. Haynes handmade custom flute, crafted from platinum, is among the world’s most expensive flutes, costing around $72,799. This flute boasts a platinum body and a hand-cut headjoint with a 14-karat rose gold lip plate and riser.

Made in the USA, its components include soldered 14-karat gold tone holes and gold springs. Its unique blend of platinum and gold may offer distinct tonal qualities compared to silver flutes. In May 2019, “katieflute” showcased this flute on YouTube, garnering over 250,000 views. [3]

Joey DeFancesco’s Priceless Blonde Hammond B3 Organ

Joey DeFrancesco - Hammond organ Solo

Joey DeFrancesco (1971–2022) was a distinguished jazz organist, celebrated as a virtuoso of the Hammond B3 organ. He came from a lineage of jazz musicians. DeFrancesco collaborated with industry giants like Miles Davis and David Sanborn.

In 2003, he sold his rare “blonde” Hammond B3 organ on eBay to Geoff Williamson, with the agreement that it would be available whenever Joey performed in Australia. In 2019, Williamson honored this agreement, bringing “Blondie” out of storage for Joey’s festival performance. Now that Joey DeFrancesco is no longer with us, his blonde Hammond instrument’s value is hard to determine, but without a doubt, it’s worth a fortune. [4]

The $600,000 Piano from the Movie Casablanca

CASABLANCA PIANO SELLS FOR $602K AT AUCTION

In 2012, the piano featured in the classic film Casablanca fetched $602,500 at a Sotheby’s auction. While expected to reach $1.2 million, the final price was still impressive for a well-used, 70-year-old instrument. The seller profited significantly, having bought it for $154,000 in 1988.

This piano is the one played by Dooley Wilson, as “Sam,” who sang “As Time Goes By.” Sold to an anonymous buyer, it highlighted the auction of over 200 pieces of Hollywood memorabilia. “As Time Goes By” almost didn’t make the film, making this piano’s fame even more remarkable. [5]

Ringo Starr’s Ludwig Drum Kit

Ringo Starr Tells the story of his First Ludwig Drum Kit

Ringo Starr’s original Ludwig Oyster Black Pearl kit is considered one of the most valuable drum kits. In the early 1960s, American instruments were scarce in Britain. Ringo fell in love with the Ludwig kit in a London shop.

He insisted the Ludwig logo remain, boosting the company’s visibility during The Beatles’ performances. The kit became an integral part of The Beatles’ image. Today, his Ludwig kits are priceless pieces of music history. [6]

Charlie Parker’s Rare $144,000 Grafton Acrylic Alto Saxophone

Red Rodney on Charlie Parker

On May 15, 1953, a historic jazz concert occurred at Massey Hall in Toronto, marking the last time the founding members of bebop played together as a quintet: Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach.

Another notable aspect was that it was a documented recording of Charlie Parker playing an acrylic saxophone gifted by Grafton. A Grafton representative gave Parker the saxophone in Detroit, Michigan. Charlie Parker’s Grafton saxophone is now at the American Jazz Museum in Kansas City, Missouri, acquired in a 1994 auction for $144,000. [7]

The $45 Million Stradivarius Viola

The 'Macdonald' Viola by Antonio Stradivari

In 2014, Sotheby’s attempted to auction the rare Macdonald Stradivarius viola for $45 million. Made in 1701 by Antonio Stradivari, it’s one of only eleven surviving violas he crafted.

The viola was played by Peter Schidlof until 1987, then stored in a vault for 30 years, preserving its condition. Despite its value, the high price deterred buyers. It remains one of the few not owned by a museum. The failed auction raised questions about preserving versus playing rare instruments. [8]

The 1959 Martin D-18E he played during Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged performance sold for over $6 million in June 2020, becoming the most expensive guitar ever sold. Peter Freedman, founder of Rode Microphones, bought it with plans to exhibit it worldwide to support the arts. The guitar’s price reflects the value of instruments tied to collective memories. [9]

Hear a $15 Million Stradivarius | Now Hear This | Great Performances on PBS

Anything associated with Albert Einstein is bound to command high prices. The Stradivarius violin played by one of Einstein’s teachers sold for $15.3 million in 2022.

Crafted in 1714 by Antonio Stradivari, it belonged to Toscha Seidel, who recorded The Wizard of Oz soundtrack and played alongside Einstein during private music sessions. In 1933, they performed together to support German-Jewish scientists. This violin, from Stradivari’s “Golden Period,” was part of the Munetsugu collection in Japan. Its connection to Einstein ensures its lasting legacy. [10]

These instruments transcend their physical form, embodying stories, history, and the legacies of their owners. From guitars to violins, each has a unique tale that elevates its value far beyond its materials.
