Top 10 Metal Covers That Crushed the Originals

Cover songs are a mixed bag. Sometimes they pay great tribute to the original artists, and sometimes… not so much. But when heavy metal bands take a crack at classics, something magical often happens. The genre’s unique style lets artists tweak songs just enough to make them stand out while still honoring the source material. Here are ten metal covers that arguably eclipse the originals.

Contents
Careless Whisper – Seether (Wham/George Michael, 1984)Carry On My Wayward Son – Anthrax (Kansas, 1976)Wish You Were Here – Avenged Sevenfold (Pink Floyd, 1975)Bad Company – Five Finger Death Punch (Bad Company, 1974)Wicked Game – HIM (Chris Isaak, 1989)Heroes – Motörhead (David Bowie, 1981)The Sound Of Silence – Disturbed (Simon and Garfunkel, 1964)When A Blind Man Cries – Metallica (Deep Purple, 1972)Immigrant Song – Diamond Head (Led Zeppelin, 1970)In The Air Tonight – In This Moment (Phil Collins, 1981)

Careless Whisper – Seether (Wham/George Michael, 1984)

Seether - Careless Whisper

Seether’s cover of “Careless Whisper” started as a joke for Valentine’s Day in 2009, but it quickly became a hit. Many younger fans didn’t even realize it was a cover! Seether kept the heart of the original but amped it up with heavy power chords and replaced the saxophone with a guitar riff. Shaun Morgan’s gritty vocals add a layer of intensity that makes this version a perfect fit for the song’s themes of infidelity and betrayal.

Carry On My Wayward Son – Anthrax (Kansas, 1976)

Anthrax "Carry On Wayward Son"

Anthrax, one of the “Big 4” thrash metal bands, might seem like an odd choice to cover Kansas’s “Carry On My Wayward Son.” But in 2017, that’s exactly what they did, and they nailed it. They stayed true to the original, even bringing in Fred Mandel on keyboard. Joey Belladonna’s vocals are surprisingly effective, making this cover a standout. Even Kansas founding member Phil Ehart gave it his seal of approval.

Wish You Were Here – Avenged Sevenfold (Pink Floyd, 1975)

Avenged Sevenfold - Wish You Were Here

Avenged Sevenfold’s version of Pink Floyd’s timeless classic, “Wish You Were Here,” is a testament to their adaptability. The original has a sense of distance, but Avenged Sevenfold’s cover brings a new clarity. They emphasize David Gilmour’s interlude solo, switching from acoustic to electric guitar. M. Shadows’ unique vocal style adds a crisp feel, introducing Pink Floyd’s masterpiece to a new generation.

Bad Company – Five Finger Death Punch (Bad Company, 1974)

Five Finger Death Punch- Bad Company

Five Finger Death Punch breathed new life into Bad Company’s self-titled hit with their 2009 cover. This version is much heavier, swapping the piano for guitars and tweaking the lyrics slightly. The result is a more powerful take on the original. The music video, recorded while playing for troops in Iraq, turned their “Bad Company” cover into a tribute to the armed forces.

Wicked Game – HIM (Chris Isaak, 1989)

HIM Wicked Game Official Video

HIM, the kings of ‘love metal,’ covered Chris Isaak’s sensual “Wicked Game” in 1997 to break into the mainstream. They sped things up, added palm-muting, and included some effective lead guitar work. Ville Valo’s vocals are on par with Isaak’s, making HIM’s version darker, edgier, and just as sexy. Their music video is a must-see, too.

Heroes – Motörhead (David Bowie, 1981)

Motörhead "Heroes" (David Bowie Cover)

Motörhead’s cover of David Bowie’s “Heroes” is especially poignant, as it was one of Lemmy Kilmister’s last recordings. Lemmy didn’t try to mimic Bowie’s passionate vocals, sticking to his signature growl. With altered lyrics, Motörhead’s heavy sound, and an exceptional guitar solo, the cover honors the original while becoming something new. It’s a fitting tribute to two true heroes.

The Sound Of Silence – Disturbed (Simon and Garfunkel, 1964)

Disturbed - The Sound Of Silence (Official Music Video) [4K UPGRADE]

Disturbed’s 2015 cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” is a stunning departure from their usual nu-metal sound. They slowed the tempo, went with a symphonic arrangement, and focused on David Draiman’s powerful vocals. His performance builds to a breathtaking crescendo, making the song’s lyrics even more relevant and impactful.

When A Blind Man Cries – Metallica (Deep Purple, 1972)

Metallica - When A Blind Man Cries (2016)

Metallica’s cover of Deep Purple’s “When A Blind Man Cries” is a fitting tribute to one of their biggest musical influences. James Hetfield’s vocals shine on this track, and the contrast between the gentle intro and Kirk Hammett’s mesmerizing guitar work is top-notch. Lars Ulrich’s drumming adds depth to the song, elevating it to another level of greatness.

Immigrant Song – Diamond Head (Led Zeppelin, 1970)

Diamond Head - Immigrant Song (Official Audio)

Diamond Head’s heavier version of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” is even better suited to a Viking invasion theme than the original. Brian Tatler’s vocals are just as good as Robert Plant’s, and his Viking warcry is a decided improvement. The guitar solo before the final verse is so good, it’s hard to believe it wasn’t in the original.

In The Air Tonight – In This Moment (Phil Collins, 1981)

In This Moment - "In The Air Tonight" [Official Lyric Video]

In This Moment’s cover of Phil Collins’ “In The Air Tonight” is a prime example of their talent. Maria Brink’s voice is perfect for the song, and the heavily distorted guitar feedback creates a sense of impending drama. The percussive climax is a thing of beauty, making this one of the best metal covers in recent memory.

These metal covers prove that sometimes, a new spin on a classic can take it to even greater heights. Whether it’s adding more intensity, a unique vocal style, or a fresh instrumental approach, these bands have truly made these songs their own.
