10. Mesa Verde and the Anasazi

Mesa Verde's Cliffside Dwellings Show a Glimpse of History | National Geographic

Kicking off our list is a truly unique spot. Mesa Verde isn’t a bustling city today. Instead, it’s a national park that protects hundreds of native species and the incredible ruins of the Anasazi people. These ancient people lived in deep connection with their environment right here.

The Anasazi built their villages directly into the cliffs and on top of the mesa, creating striking and unforgettable sights. Like many Indigenous peoples, the Anasazi were experts at living peacefully with nature. They held a profound respect for the natural world and focused on harmonious living. They believed this path led to healthier lives—a wisdom that still resonates with us today.

9. Denver, Colorado

Nestled at the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains, Denver started as a humble mining town during the Pike’s Peak gold rush in the mid-1800s. Known as “the Mile High City” because it’s a mile above sea level, Denver has grown into Colorado’s capital and a county of its own.

Famous for its fantastic ski slopes and even its appearance in video games, Denver is also rich in green spaces. If you see an aerial shot in spring or summer, you’ll notice a lush, green landscape surrounding a compact cluster of skyscrapers. Denver boasts over two hundred parks, with City Park being the largest at a massive three hundred and fourteen acres. It’s practically a neighborhood within a giant park! Beyond the city, adventurers can explore numerous trails, national parks, and mountain peaks.

8. The Modern-Day Curwood Castle

Curwood Castle - Owosso Michigan

Curwood Castle looks as if it leaped straight out of a fairytale. This unique structure was once home to James Oliver Curwood, an action-adventure novelist from the early twentieth century who clearly had a love for the magical. The house itself is like a miniature storybook castle, complete with flagstones, towers, and turrets.

What’s perhaps even more impressive than the castle is its setting. It’s located in a small park, surrounded by trees, on the banks of the Shiawassee River in Owosso, Michigan. Imagine what a perfect retreat this would have been for an author seeking inspiration from nature! It’s been beautifully preserved and now serves as a museum and a public park for everyone to enjoy.

7. Chautauqua Lake, New York

New York's CHAUTAUQUA LAKE: From Jamestown to Mayville

The Chautauqua Lake region in New York offers a delightful mix of charming small towns and sprawling, rolling forests. Situated about an hour and a half from Niagara Falls, Chautauqua Lake has an interesting history. During the harsh winters of upstate New York, it was used for ice mining. Workers would carve large blocks of ice from the frozen lake to be shipped across New England.

Though the ice mining days are long gone, much of the area remains wonderfully unchanged. Towns are cozily nestled in forest clearings, with buildings placed wherever space allows. Summer brings special events that draw both tourists and locals out into the wilderness. And while the ice isn’t mined for trade anymore, it’s used to create stunning ice sculptures in winter. You’ll often see deer and other forest creatures wandering close to people here—it adds to the fairytale feel!

6. The Ruralization of Chicago, Illinois

Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago is the third-most populous city in the United States, and it’s still growing. The city faced a major challenge with the Great Chicago Fire but has bounced back stronger than ever.

A fantastic example of this resilience is the city’s Green Healthy Neighborhoods initiative. Over recent years, Chicago has been renovating some of its older, less safe neighborhoods. The goal? To transform them into a massive thirteen-square-mile area filled with parks, urban farms, and trails. This transformation is ongoing, and you can already see beautiful streaks of green appearing throughout the city.

5. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam is old—really old. Older than most places on this list, it was first settled by farmers thousands of years ago. From those humble beginnings, it has grown into the capital of a nation, attracting people from all over the world.

The way Amsterdam’s people coexist with nature is quite obvious. For one, many of their streets are actually waterways! Amsterdam is famous for its canal system, which was the result of careful planning as the city’s population grew. Perhaps because of this watery landscape, the streets are lined with an abundance of trees, and parks are scattered throughout the city. Vondelpark, Amsterdam’s largest green space, attracts millions of visitors each year. It’s a city truly connected to its surroundings.

4. Central Park, New York City

History of Central Park

When you think of places in the U.S. where people and nature meet, New York City’s Central Park probably springs to mind. This huge expanse of green stands in beautiful contrast to the surrounding skyscrapers and office buildings. It’s like a man-made frame of steel and glass for a stunning natural canvas.

Central Park is two and a half miles long, half a mile wide, and covers over seven hundred acres. Millions of people visit every year, making it one of the most popular tourist spots in the United States. Tucked away among the trees and lawns, you’ll find a host of attractions, including a mall, a castle, several taverns, and even a zoo. It’s truly a marvel of urban planning and a prime example of people coexisting with nature.

3. The Majesty of 25 Verde

Imagine a building that’s also a garden and a piece of art—that’s 25 Verde! Located in Milan, Italy, this incredible structure was designed by Luciano Pia, an architect known for blending natural and man-made elements. Pia’s vision was to bring the nearby hills into the city and add more green space, and he certainly succeeded.

25 Verde is a three-sided, box-shaped apartment building that wraps around a beautiful, raised park. Trees, flowers, and greenery cover its terraces and every available surface. Even the building materials, like green paints and rust-colored steel, help it blend with nature. All these plants work together to pull hundreds of liters of carbon dioxide from the air. It acts like a living filter for Milan, a city known for its industry. If well maintained, this green marvel should thrive for years to come.

2. Auckland, New Zealand

Anyone who’s a fan of The Lord of the Rings knows New Zealand is breathtakingly beautiful. Wide, sweeping grasslands roll alongside stony hills and through forests, leading right down to Auckland, the country’s largest city. Founded by the Maori, later joined by the British, and once the capital before Wellington, Auckland is now an international hub of cultures. It also serves as a fantastic gateway to New Zealand’s natural wonders.

Besides the stunning rolling hills nearby, Auckland itself was built on the Auckland Volcanic Field—a group of volcanic points that have been mostly dormant for thousands of years. The Maori used many of these volcanic cones (which they call “maunga”) as fortifications. Several of the remaining maunga have been preserved and integrated into the city as parks and monuments. It’s a truly unique way to incorporate nature into urban life.

1. The Blended Urban Forest of Singapore

Singapore | Real 8K

The island city-state of Singapore might just be the most environmentally friendly city in the world. So many places in Singapore could have made this list on their own—like its massive airport, which houses a zoo, a huge new park, and a giant man-made waterfall! Instead of listing them all, we’ll consider the entire city as one incredible example.

Everything about modern Singapore is designed to strengthen the environment. This includes decades-in-advance planning and the careful placement of its blocks, streets, and parks. Much of the new construction is covered in greenery, and there are constant efforts to increase these green spaces and protect the natural environment and wildlife. Even its farms have been reinvented as vertical, indoor structures. Few modern places are as in touch with their environment as Singapore.

These ten places show us that it’s possible for people and nature to thrive together. From ancient ruins integrated into parks to futuristic cities designed with green at their heart, the world is full of inspiration. When we respect and make space for nature, our communities become healthier, more beautiful, and more vibrant.
