10 Brunswick-Balke Collender Cup

Imagine the very first Super Bowl trophy, but for the year 1920! That’s what the Brunswick-Balke Collender Cup was. It was meant for the champions of the first National Football League season, then called the American Professional Football Association (APFA). The Akron Pros proudly took home this “silver loving trophy” after a somewhat controversial win. Other teams, like the Decatur Staleys (who later became the Chicago Bears), had tied with them.

The mystery deepens because when the Decatur Staleys won in 1921, the cup was nowhere to be found. Early NFL meeting notes don’t mention it, and incredibly, the NFL doesn’t even have a picture of it! Its location is a complete puzzle. Most historians think it was simply misplaced and eventually scrapped as its importance faded. What a loss for football history!

9 Portrait of a Young Man

Painted by the legendary Raphael between 1513 and 1514, the “Portrait of a Young Man” showed a confident young fellow gazing calmly at the viewer. Before World War II, this masterpiece was part of Prince Czartoryski’s amazing art collection in Poland. It sat alongside other treasures like Leonardo da Vinci’s “Lady With an Ermine.”

When the Nazis invaded Poland, the collection was hidden but eventually discovered by the Gestapo. The artworks were then sent to Berlin for Hitler’s personal collection. Somewhere along this journey, Raphael’s portrait vanished without a trace. Many believe the Nazis destroyed it; the movie “The Monuments Men” even shows it being burned. If found today, this painting, considered the most valuable piece lost to the Nazi regime, could be worth over a staggering one hundred million dollars.

8 Peking Man Fossils

Imagine uncovering the largest collection of Homo erectus fossils ever found! That’s exactly what the Peking Man fossils were. Discovered in the 1930s, these ancient remains, estimated to be between 250,000 and 750,000 years old, were declared national treasures in China. Their importance to understanding human evolution is immense.

In 1941, as war loomed, these precious fossils were packed into crates to be shipped to the United States for safekeeping. They left the Union Medical College in Peking on a U.S. Marine vehicle, heading for a railway station. Sadly, they were never seen again. The chaos of World War II swept through China, and the fossils vanished. Decades later, in 2010, a search was sparked by an elderly war veteran. He claimed to have buried the fossils while digging a foxhole near the Manchurian border. While his story seemed credible, the area is now heavily industrialized, making excavation nearly impossible. It’s heartbreaking to think these invaluable clues to our past might be buried under modern concrete, their rediscovery holding “immense value to science.”

7 The Magnificent Eleven Photos

Photographer Robert Capa captured some of the most iconic images of D-Day. Landing on Omaha Beach with the 16th Infantry Regiment, about an hour after the first wave, he documented the brutal reality of war. He described seeing men wading through waist-deep water, rifles ready, with smoke-filled beaches and invasion obstacles all around. It was a scene of pure chaos and courage.

Capa claimed to have taken over 100 photos that fateful morning, but only a handful, famously known as “The Magnificent Eleven,” survived. The common story is that a young darkroom assistant accidentally melted the emulsion on most of the negatives. However, this account has faced some skepticism recently. Some researchers suggest Capa might not have been under as much fire as believed and perhaps exaggerated the number of photos taken. Whatever the truth, most of those powerful images from one of modern history’s most pivotal days are lost forever, leaving us with just those haunting eleven.

6 The History of Cardenio (Lost Shakespeare Play)

Imagine a lost play by William Shakespeare! “The History of Cardenio” is believed to be just that. Records from 1613 show an actor being paid for performing in this play, co-written by Shakespeare and his collaborator John Fletcher. This was during the time Shakespeare was producing some of his most famous works. The story, filled with romance, betrayal, and seduction – classic Shakespearean themes – was reportedly inspired by Don Quixote. This influence might have come from a surge in Spanish art after England and Spain made peace.

The trail goes cold until the 18th century, when another playwright, Lewis Theobald, published a play called “Double Falsehood.” He claimed it was based on Shakespeare’s original Cardenio manuscripts. This has left experts in a bind, trying to figure out what’s truly Shakespeare and Fletcher, and what’s Theobald’s adaptation. As Shakespearean scholar James Shapiro puts it, we’re essentially “dealing with an adaptation of an adaptation,” meaning the true original work by the Bard is considered lost to time.

5 The Jules Rimet Trophy

The original World Cup trophy, the Jules Rimet Trophy, had quite an adventurous life before it vanished. Awarded to football’s world champions every four years, it even managed to evade the Nazis! Its luck seemed to run out in 1966 when it was stolen in England. Amazingly, a dog named Pickles found it wrapped in newspaper under a hedge.

After Brazil won the World Cup for the third time in 1970, they were allowed to keep the trophy permanently. But its story took a dark turn in 1983. Thieves broke into the Brazilian Football Confederation, overpowered guards, and snatched the trophy from its display case. Despite nationwide appeals, it was never seen again. The common belief is that the iconic cup was melted down and sold as gold. Tragically, some suspects in the theft died before the mystery could be fully unraveled, making its recovery even more unlikely.

4 The Honjo Masamune Sword

The Honjo Masamune was no ordinary sword. It was crafted by Masamune, a legendary Japanese swordsmith from the Kanagawa Period. His technique of blending soft and hard steels in layers made his swords incredibly strong and resistant to breaking, distinguished by a beautiful wavy pattern on the blade. Masamune’s skill was so revered that Emperor Fushimi made him Chief Swordsmith in 1287.

Named after its first owner, Honjo Shigenaga, who wielded it in the Battle of Kawanakajima in 1561, the Honjo Masamune became a treasured heirloom of Japan’s powerful Tokugawa family for 250 years. However, after Japan’s surrender at the end of World War II in 1945, the Tokugawa family, like others, had to surrender their weapons. The Honjo Masamune was handed over, destined for the United States. Tragically, it was lost in transit and has never been seen since. Some fear it was melted down, but there’s always a glimmer of hope this masterpiece of Japanese craftsmanship might one day resurface, perhaps in America.

3 Da Vinci’s Medusa Shield

One of art history’s most curious vanishes is Leonardo da Vinci’s Medusa Shield. Said to be an early work by the master, this wasn’t a typical canvas painting. Instead, it was a shield adorned with the terrifying image of Medusa, the snake-haired monster from Greek mythology. Our main source for this lost artwork is Giorgio Vasari, a 16th-century painter and historian who chronicled the lives of Renaissance artists.

Vasari wrote that the shield was so shockingly lifelike and “monstrous and horrible” that it startled Leonardo’s own father when he first saw it. Apparently, this was exactly what young Leonardo intended. He reportedly said, “This work serves the end for which it was made… this is the effect that it was meant to produce.” After this dramatic unveiling in the Da Vinci household, the Medusa Shield was never documented again. Its disappearance has led some to even question if this eerie masterpiece ever truly existed.

2 The Crown Jewels of Ireland

On July 6th, 1907, a cleaning lady at Dublin Castle made a shocking discovery: the Crown Jewels of Ireland were gone! She found the safe door open, with the keys still dangling in the lock of an inner door. This theft was a huge embarrassment, especially since King Edward VII was due to visit for the Irish International Exhibition just days later. The King was reportedly furious about the sloppy security.

These jewels, created for the Order of St. Patrick and worth an estimated $20 million today, were under 24-hour guard. However, rumors swirled that Sir Arthur Vicars, who held the keys, had been careless with them, perhaps while intoxicated. Further reports darkly hinted at a “ring of debauchery” within Dublin Castle, involving wild parties and scandalous behavior – a story King Edward VII allegedly tried to suppress. Given these circumstances, a theft, while shocking, might not have been entirely surprising. The precious Crown Jewels of Ireland have never been recovered.

1 The Florentine Diamond

The Florentine Diamond was a legendary gem – a stunning, 137-carat yellow diamond originally found in India. Its brilliance made it one of Europe’s most sought-after jewels. Its early history is debated. One tale says it adorned Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, when he died in battle in 1477, only to be picked up by a passerby from the battlefield. Another story suggests it was stolen from Goa, India, and sold to the powerful Medici family of Florence.

The diamond stayed with the Medicis for a long time before eventually moving to Vienna, where it was displayed in Hofburg Palace. Its luck ran out during World War I. As the Austro-Hungarian Empire crumbled, the diamond was smuggled out of Austria but was lost somewhere along the way. Many suspect this magnificent jewel was cut into smaller stones and sold on the black market. Despite its disappearance, the Italian government still claims legal ownership and calls for its return, should it ever surface.

The stories of these ten lost items are more than just historical footnotes; they are compelling narratives of mystery, human error, conflict, and sometimes, sheer bad luck. From legendary jewels and priceless art to crucial historical records and symbols of sporting glory, their absence leaves a void. These vanished treasures remind us that history is not just what is found, but also what is lost, continually fueling our imagination and the enduring hope that one day, some of these mysteries might be solved.
