When you’re browsing the beauty aisle, it’s easy to get drawn in by shiny packaging and promises of flawless skin. But what’s really lurking inside those bottles and tubes? The terms “non-toxic” or “toxin-free” sound reassuring, but they aren’t always strictly regulated. This means some of our go-to beauty items might carry risks we don’t even realize. Let’s dive into 10 common beauty products that could be more dangerous than you think, yet many of us continue to use them.

10. Skin Creams Containing Mercury

Mercury might be a naturally occurring metal, but it’s not something you want in your skincare. Shockingly, some skin creams, particularly those that are homemade, unlabeled, or imported illegally, can contain harmful levels of mercury. These creams are often marketed to lighten skin, fade blemishes, or treat acne. Mercury can appear on labels as mercurous chloride, calomel, mercuric, or simply mercury.

A woman applied skin lightening cream with mercury. Here is what happened next.

Exposure to mercury through skin creams can lead to serious health issues, including poisoning. Symptoms can range from tremors and memory problems to changes in vision or hearing. Children and pregnant women are especially vulnerable. Always be cautious with unsealed or unlabelled products and stick to reputable brands that clearly list their ingredients.

9. Mascara

Your favorite mascara could be a breeding ground for bacteria. Every time you dip that wand into the tube, you’re potentially introducing germs. The dark, moist environment inside a mascara tube is perfect for bacteria to thrive. While preservatives help slow down this process, they don’t stop it completely.

Using contaminated mascara can lead to nasty eye infections like pinkeye or even cysts. To stay safe, always note when you first opened your mascara and toss it after four to six months. If you notice any change in its texture, color, or smell, it’s time for a new one, no matter how much is left.

8. CC Creams

CC creams, or color-correcting creams, are popular for their multitasking abilities – offering coverage, sun protection, and moisturization all in one. They’re great for a low-maintenance look. However, some CC creams contain ingredients that raise concerns. One such ingredient is acrylamide, which has been linked to cancer and can form during the manufacturing process of certain cosmetic components.

SUNSCREEN is 40-TIMES Over the SAFETY LIMIT

Other ingredients to watch out for include oxybenzone, a sunscreen agent that can cause allergic reactions and may disrupt hormones, and retinyl palmitate (a form of vitamin A). While vitamin A is good for skin, when retinyl palmitate is used in products applied during sun exposure, it can ironically make skin more sensitive to sun damage, potentially leading to skin tumors. Always check the ingredient list before you buy.

7. Nail Polish

That strong smell when you open a bottle of nail polish or remover should be a hint that these products contain potent chemicals. Many nail polishes contain ingredients that can do more than just discolor your nails; they can make them thin and brittle. Some polishes contain styrene, a chemical used in plastics and rubber production, which can irritate the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. Long-term exposure has been linked to nervous system issues.

What Happens to Your Body After You Apply Nail Polish

Look for brands that are “five-free,” meaning they don’t contain formaldehyde, toluene, dibutyl phthalate, formaldehyde resin, and camphor. Nail polish removers aren’t much better, often containing irritants like isopropyl acetone and ethyl acetate, or even potential neurotoxins like methyl ethyl ketone. Consistent long-term use could pose more significant health risks.

6. Perfume

We’ve used perfumes for centuries, often without a second thought about what’s actually in them. Behind those beautiful bottles and captivating scents are complex mixtures of chemicals. Many perfumes are loaded with synthetic substances like coumarin, BHT, citral, benzyl salicylate, and oxybenzone. Some of these can be allergens or irritants.

One particularly concerning ingredient found in some fragrances is lilial (butylphenyl methylpropional), which has been linked to reproductive issues and was banned for use in cosmetics in the EU in March 2022. It’s always a good idea to research the ingredients in your favorite fragrance or opt for those with transparent ingredient lists.

5. Setting Powder

Setting powders are fantastic for keeping makeup in place and controlling shine. But what are we dusting onto our faces? Some popular setting powders contain ingredients like talc. While talc is a natural mineral, it can be harmful if inhaled or swallowed and has been a subject of controversy due to potential contamination with asbestos, a known carcinogen. Even pure talc can cause lung irritation.

Titanium dioxide, a UV filter, is another common ingredient that is generally safe in lotions but can be a concern in loose or pressed powders due to inhalation risk. Perhaps most surprisingly, some powders contain polytetrafluoroethylene – better known as Teflon, the non-stick coating. Maybe a little natural shine isn’t so bad after all?

4. BB Creams

BB creams, like their CC cream cousins, promise an all-in-one solution: moisturizer, primer, foundation, and sunblock. They flew off the shelves when they hit Western markets. However, not all BB creams are created equal, and some harbor potentially harmful ingredients. Besides common culprits like fragrances and oxybenzone, a preservative called methylisothiazolinone (MI) is a major one to watch for.

MI is known to cause allergic reactions and can irritate the skin, eyes, and lungs. It’s restricted in Europe for leave-on products like BB creams because you wear them all day. Lab studies have also suggested it could be a neurotoxin. Beyond specific chemicals, many BB creams use cheaper, synthesized ingredients that don’t truly nourish your skin as promised.

3. Lip Gloss

That sweet-smelling, shiny lip gloss might seem harmless, but it can pack more than just a pretty pout. Many lip glosses, especially those with enticing food-like scents, are packed with fragrances that can be drying and irritating to the lips. Some also contain citral, a natural fragrance ingredient derived from plants, which can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, leading to rashes or swollen lips.

Risky Lipstick: Dangerous Metals in Lip Products

More alarmingly, studies have found that some lip glosses can contain traces of heavy metals like lead, cadmium, chromium, and aluminum. Since lip products are easily ingested, this is a significant concern. Remember, “natural” doesn’t always mean completely safe when it comes to ingredients that can cause reactions.

2. Blush

Blush is meant to give your cheeks a healthy, rosy glow. Ironically, some blushes contain formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and skin irritant. You won’t see “formaldehyde” listed directly, but look out for ingredients like polyoxymethylene urea and quaternium-15. These act as preservatives by slowly releasing formaldehyde over time.

Polyoxymethylene urea is also used as a bulking agent and has been linked to organ system toxicity and allergic reactions. Quaternium-15 is a common cosmetic preservative notorious for releasing formaldehyde. It’s wise to steer clear of blushes, or any facial product, containing these chemicals to avoid unnecessary exposure.

1. SPF Foundation

With increased awareness about skin cancer, more and more foundations, BB creams, and concealers come with added SPF. This seems like a great way to protect your skin from harmful UV rays effortlessly. However, there’s a catch: you’re probably not getting the sun protection you think you are.

WHY YOU SHOULD NOT RELY ON SPF IN FOUNDATION! EVER!

To achieve the SPF level stated on the bottle, you’d need to apply a much thicker layer of foundation than most people typically use. The amount of makeup usually applied provides minimal actual sun protection, leaving your skin vulnerable. Furthermore, don’t assume that layering SPF products increases protection (e.g., SPF 30 sunscreen + SPF 15 foundation does not equal SPF 45). Your protection is only as strong as the highest SPF product applied correctly. For reliable sun safety, always apply a dedicated sunscreen before your makeup.

Navigating the world of beauty products can be tricky. While it’s not about fearing every product on the shelf, being an informed consumer is key. Reading ingredient lists, understanding potential risks, and choosing products from reputable brands that prioritize safety can help you enjoy the benefits of makeup and skincare without compromising your health. Your skin will thank you for it!
