10 An Awful Keepsake

Jaime Osuna suspected of murder, again

Jaime Osuna already had a disturbing reputation. He was serving a life sentence for the horrific torture and murder of 37-year-old Yvette Pena in a California motel back in 2011. Beyond this, Osuna had a history of violence against his cellmates and was covered in tattoos, including on his face, proclaiming his devotion to Satan. He was, to put it mildly, a deeply troubled individual.

His notoriety grew on March 9, 2019. Osuna reportedly tortured and murdered his cellmate, Luis Romero, using a homemade knife. He didn’t stop there; he mutilated Romero’s body, decapitating him and carving the corners of his mouth into a grotesque smile. Shockingly, Osuna then removed one of Romero’s eyeballs, a finger, and part of a lung, crafting them into a necklace. Guards later found him wearing this horrifying creation.

After being moved to a psychiatric ward at Salinas Valley State Prison, doctors diagnosed Osuna with antisocial personality disorder. This diagnosis, while accurate, feels like a massive understatement given the extreme nature of his actions.

9 Grind(r)core

Man accused of killing and cannibalizing Kevin Bacon arraigned, heading to trial

This next case is incredibly grim. It involves Kevin Bacon, a 25-year-old from Michigan (no relation to the actor). On Christmas Eve in 2019, Bacon went on a date arranged through the Grindr app. His roommate reported him missing when he didn’t return.

Bacon had met Mark Latunski. The encounter turned tragic. Latunski murdered Bacon by stabbing him in the neck and then slitting his throat. He then hung Bacon’s body from the ceiling of his home. In a disturbing confession, Latunski described cutting Bacon’s body to let his blood drip onto dirt under a trapdoor, supposedly to “fertilize the plants outside.” He also removed Bacon’s testicles, fried them, and ate them.

Latunski claimed these horrific acts were consensual. He even revealed more gruesome plans for Bacon’s body, including using bone meal for tulips and muscles for jerky. Authorities intercepted a package containing a dehydrator addressed to Latunski after the murder was discovered. This case is a truly horrifying example of a date gone terribly wrong.

8 Heist of the Century…Or Maybe Just the Weekend

Pallets stacked high with bottles of blue WKD alcopop

Let’s take a breather with a crime that’s more baffling than brutal. In Scotland, a highly organized group of criminals pulled off a daring heist that sounds like something from a movie. They managed to make off with a very specific, and somewhat unusual, loot.

What did these masterminds steal? They used a “convoy of lorries” (trucks) to steal £280,000-worth (about $380,000) of blue WKD alcopops. This sugary alcoholic drink is popular at parties and often associated with younger crowds. So, how did they pull off such a large-scale theft of party drinks?

It wasn’t exactly a high-security operation. The thieves simply broke into Caledonian Bottlers, loaded up their trucks with the booze, and drove away. One of the stolen containers was later found burned out, but the rest of the blue WKD vanished. It certainly makes for a peculiar crime story.

7 Expensive Hairdos

Watch: Passengers arrested at Chennai airport for smuggling gold under their wigs

Customs officials in India uncovered a rather inventive smuggling technique in March 2021, though the execution wasn’t quite perfect. Five individuals – Magroob Akbarali, Syed Ahamedulla, Santhosh Selvam, Abdullah, and Zubair Hassan Rafiyutheen – were stopped before they could leave Chennai International Airport.

What made officials suspicious? They noticed that Magroob’s and Zubair’s hairstyles looked a bit…off. Their hair seemed unusually bulky. When asked to remove what turned out to be wigs, officers found packets of gold paste glued to their shaved heads. More packets containing gold and foreign currency were discovered hidden in their socks and underwear. The total value of the smuggled goods was around $380,000. It seems some people will go to great lengths, or heights, to hide their valuables.

6 Catch Me If You Can…Read

Bank robber demands money using note with his name and address on it

Bank robberies often conjure images of masked bandits and dramatic getaways. This story, however, is quite different and features a robber who made a critical, almost comical, mistake.

Michael Harrel, 54, walked into a bank in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2019. He didn’t bother with a mask, which was his first blunder. He then handed the teller a note demanding money. The teller complied, giving Harrel a modest $206. Harrel then made his escape, heading straight home.

But the note he used for the robbery held a crucial clue. On the other side of the paper were Harrel’s name and contact details. He had apparently used the same piece of paper earlier for an errand at the local Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Unsurprisingly, police had no trouble finding and arresting him. Not exactly a criminal mastermind.

5 (Fore)heading for Trouble

Florida Man With Florida Tattoo On Forehead Arrested For Misuse Of 911, Marijuana Possession

Florida often gains attention for unusual news stories, and this one fits the bill. Twenty-two-year-old Matthew Leatham’s crime wasn’t violent or elaborate, but it was certainly strange, especially considering his unique personal branding.

Leatham made two calls to 911, not for an emergency, but to ask for a ride home. When the operator informed him that this was a misuse of the emergency line, he reportedly became rude and belligerent. Police did respond to his calls, but instead of giving him a ride, they arrested him. He was charged with misusing the 911 system and possession of cannabis.

What makes this story particularly memorable is Leatham’s forehead, which is tattooed with a depiction of the state of Florida. It’s safe to say his choice of tattoo and his actions that day both drew a lot of attention.

4 Dark Deeds Done Due To a Djinn

Courtroom sketch of Shabaz Khan, defendant in a murder trial

When a murderer claims a supernatural entity forced them to commit a crime, it often sounds like a desperate attempt to avoid responsibility. Sometimes, it can be a sign of severe mental illness.

In the case of 51-year-old Shabaz Khan from Burnley, England, his excuse was particularly peculiar. He was accused of murdering Dr. Saman Mir Sacharvi, 49, and her 14-year-old daughter, Vian Mangrio. Khan claimed that two djinn (supernatural spirits in Islamic belief) made him do it. He even named these supposed spirits: “Robert” and “Rita.” After the murders, he set their house on fire.

Understandably, this defense didn’t hold up. Khan initially pleaded not guilty, citing the influence of “Robert” and “Rita.” However, he later dropped these claims and changed his plea to guilty. He mentioned in court that he was taking medication and his “brain feels slightly better.” The ordinary names he gave his alleged supernatural tormentors made his story even stranger.

3 A Different Sort of “Smash and Grab”

Man Withdraws A LOT More Than Money At ATM Machine

This next story involves some truly bizarre behavior in a public place, leading to an arrest for public intoxication. It’s one of those incidents that makes you wonder what was going through someone’s head.

Back in 2014, Lonnie J. Hutton, 49, was reportedly very intoxicated when he wandered into a bar in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Instead of ordering a drink, he approached an ATM. But he wasn’t trying to withdraw cash. Eyewitnesses reported that Hutton attempted to have sexual intercourse with the ATM machine.

When bar staff escorted him outside, Hutton’s strange behavior didn’t stop. He then proceeded to engage in sexual acts with a picnic table. Police were called, and Hutton was arrested and charged with public intoxication. It’s certainly a unique way to get kicked out of a bar.

2 Giving Too Much of a Sh*t

Mugshot of Nicholas Newhart with distinctive facial tattoos

Here’s another story of bar-related trouble, this time from Nashville, Tennessee. Police officers often face unpredictable and sometimes unpleasant situations, and this incident is a prime example.

Nicholas Newhart, 39, was reportedly heavily intoxicated at “Kid Rock’s Big Ass Honky Tonk Rock ‘N Roll Steakhouse.” Security staff had trouble removing him as he was blocking an emergency exit and acting aggressively, so they called the Metro Police.

When two officers arrived and tried to get Newhart to leave, he reacted in a shocking and unsanitary way. Newhart allegedly swung his colostomy bag at the officers, covering them with its contents. He was promptly arrested and faced several charges. Reports also noted that Newhart had tattoos associated with neo-Nazi groups, adding another disturbing layer to the incident.

1 Brushing Scam or Agroterrorism? Whatever, It’s Weird

Why is China sending packages of seeds?

During the early days of the pandemic in 2020, a strange phenomenon added to the anxiety many people were feeling. Around 187 Texans received unsolicited packages from China. These packages were often labeled as containing “jewelry,” but inside, recipients found clear plastic baggies filled with mysterious seeds.

This situation raised many questions. One theory was that it was a “brushing scam.” This is a deceptive tactic where online sellers send unsolicited items to people and then post fake positive reviews in their names to boost their ratings on e-commerce sites.

However, the Texas Department of Agriculture Commissioner, Sid Millar, issued a stern warning. He stated, “An invasive plant species might not sound threatening, but these small invaders could destroy Texas agriculture.” He urged Texans to “treat them like they’re radioactive or like kryptonite” and not to plant them. Whether it was a simple scam or something more sinister aimed at disrupting agriculture, it was undeniably weird and unsettling.

Well, there you have it – ten crimes so strange they almost sound made up. From baffling decisions to truly horrific acts, these stories show a side of human behavior that’s hard to understand. They remind us that truth can indeed be stranger than fiction, and sometimes, the weirdest stories are the ones that really happened. What makes people commit such unbelievable acts? That’s a question we might never fully answer.
