Australia is famous for its unique and sometimes scary wildlife, often overshadowing other continents. But is this reputation truly deserved? Many of Australia’s creatures are more bark than bite, while others, often overlooked, pose a real threat. Let’s explore 10 Australian animals with surprisingly misplaced reputations.
10. Excessively Feared—Huntsman Spider
Huntsman spiders are large, hairy, and fast, a combination that understandably frightens many. They’re often seen as a stereotypical Australian horror, feared worldwide. However, these spiders are mostly harmless.
While their size can be intimidating, huntsman spiders prefer to flee rather than fight. Their venom is unpleasant but not dangerous. They even help by eating other pests, making them more friend than foe. So, despite their scary appearance, there’s no real reason to fear these gentle giants.[1]
9. Not Feared Enough—Saltwater Crocodile
Crocodiles are generally feared, but saltwater crocodiles deserve even more respect. Many people confuse them with alligators, which are relatively harmless in comparison.
Saltwater crocodiles are larger, more aggressive, and have a much stronger bite force than alligators. “Salties” are uniquely formidable and pose a significant threat to humans. They are among the most dangerous creatures you can encounter in Australia, so caution is essential.[2]
8. Excessively Feared—Cassowary
Cassowaries are large, prehistoric-looking birds with sharp claws and a reputation for being dangerous. They are often considered the most dangerous bird in the world, and while that might be true, it’s important to consider the context.
Birds, in general, pose very little threat to humans. The first confirmed death caused by a cassowary was nearly a century ago, and incidents are rare. They primarily show aggression when their territory is invaded. While they can be scary, they don’t quite live up to their monstrous reputation.[3]
7. Not Feared Enough—Cane Toad
Cane toads are large, poisonous toads that might not seem particularly terrifying at first glance. However, they might be the most harmful animal on this list.
While they won’t directly kill you, cane toads cause incredible environmental damage. They breed quickly, consume vast amounts of food, and threaten Australia’s native species. Considered a major pest by the Australian government, they pose a significant threat to the country’s ecosystems and future.[4]
6. Excessively Feared—Redback Spider
The redback spider, often called the “Australian black widow,” is known as one of the world’s most venomous spiders. It’s rivaled only by funnel-web spiders. Redbacks can and have killed humans.
However, since an effective antivenom was introduced in the 1950s, only one death has been attributed to their bite. While a bite would certainly result in an unpleasant hospital trip, it’s highly unlikely to be fatal.[5]
5. Not Feared Enough—Platypus
The platypus is often considered cute and charming. But despite their allure, they aren’t quite as cuddly as they appear.
While not the most dangerous animal, platypuses have some less charming traits that are often overlooked. Male platypuses are venomous, an unusual trait for mammals. Their stingers can deliver venom that, while not fatal, can cause excruciating pain. It’s best to observe them from a safe distance.[6]
4. Excessively Feared—Inland Taipan
The inland taipan is known as the most venomous snake in the world, possessing the most potent venom according to lab tests. So, how can it be excessively feared?
These snakes are incredibly shy and rare. While their venom is indeed potent, they are unlikely to be encountered. Even if you do come across one, they prefer to flee unless provoked. And even then, they often give a warning display. Bites are rare, and those who have been bitten survived thanks to quick treatment.[7]
5. Not Feared Enough—Kangaroo
Kangaroos are the symbol of Australia, known for their unique physiology and endearing appearance. But there’s more to them than meets the eye.
According to one wildlife expert, the best course of action when encountering a kangaroo is to “just get away from it as fast as you can.” Kangaroos can kick with enough force to cause severe injuries. While attacks are rare, they can be fatal. It’s best to maintain a safe distance from these powerful animals.[8]
2. Excessively Feared—Sydney Funnel-Web Spider
The Sydney funnel-web spider is possibly the most feared spider on Earth. But does it live up to the hype? Compared to other spiders, perhaps. In general, not really.
Their bite is certainly not something you want to experience, but they are not likely to be a major threat to your life if you visit Australia. They don’t jump or chase people, despite rumors. Since the introduction of antivenom, there have been no deaths attributed to their bite.[9]
1. Not Feared Enough—Eastern Brown Snake
The eastern brown snake is the snake to truly fear in Australia. While its venom is second to the inland taipan, its nervous disposition makes a bite far more likely.
They are common in human-inhabited areas, and their bite is often painless, meaning it may go unnoticed until it’s too late. The eastern brown snake is responsible for the most snake-caused deaths in Australia. Caution is advised.[10]
Australia is a wonderful and beautiful country. By keeping a safe distance from wildlife, there’s no real reason to avoid visiting this unique and incredible continent.
