Pregnant Mummy

Pregnant mummy! The unknown Lady of Warsaw

While incredibly old mummies, like the 10,600-year-old one found in Spirit Cave, Nevada, have amazed us for years, a 2021 discovery in Poland added a new layer of mystery. A mummy donated to the University of Warsaw way back in 1826 held a surprising secret.

This mummy, on display at Warsaw’s National Museum since 1917, was thought to be a male priest from Thebes, Egypt, based on its coffin. However, recent analysis revealed something astonishing: the remains belonged to a pregnant woman. She was likely between 20 and 30 years old and was six to eight months pregnant when she passed away.

Now called the “Mysterious Lady of the National Museum in Warsaw,” she was buried with valuable amulets, hinting at a high status in society. The reason for her death is still unknown, adding to her intriguing story. [1]

Ship of Dreams

1st September 1985: Wreck of the Titanic discovered by Robert Ballard

In September 1985, Robert Ballard felt the pressure. His team had spent over a week searching the North Atlantic seafloor with no luck. Just as he was pondering the mission’s lack of success, his cook announced a find. Rushing to the control room, Ballard saw a live feed from a submersible robot: one of the Titanic’s massive boilers lay on the ocean floor.

The robot followed a trail of debris, and the next morning, the bow of the legendary Titanic appeared, seen for the first time since its sinking on April 15, 1912. Ballard’s team confirmed the ship had split in two, its stern resting about 400 meters (1,312 feet) away. Scattered nearby were china plates, broken furniture, a case of champagne, and poignant pairs of leather shoes—a sad reminder of the lives lost. Years later, it was revealed Ballard’s primary mission was to find two lost nuclear submarines, which he did. He used the remaining time to locate the Titanic. [2]

Walking with Giants: How the Easter Island Moai Moved | Nat Geo Live

On Easter Sunday in 1722, Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen landed on a remote Pacific island. He named it Paaseiland, or Easter Island. The island’s native name is Rapa Nui, and its inhabitants are also known by this name. Roggeveen was actually searching for Terra Australis, a mythical southern continent, and Davis Land, another supposed island.

Instead, his voyage led him to Easter Island, and later to Bora Bora, Maupiti, and Samoa. Easter Island is most famous for its enormous Moai statues. Interestingly, many of these have fallen over since Roggeveen’s arrival. For a long time, people thought the Moai were just giant heads. However, excavations in 2010 revealed that these heads were attached to even larger bodies buried underground. The statues were carved using stone chisels. How the islanders moved these colossal figures remains a puzzle, though it’s believed they used wooden sledges, log rollers, and ropes. [3]

A Girl’s Best Friend

The Big Hole, Kimberley Diamond Mine in South Africa - Bonus Clip | THE UNJUST & US

Diamonds, symbols of love and strength, get their name from the Greek word “adamas,” meaning “unconquerable.” The first diamond deposits were found in India in the 4th century, becoming part of ancient trade routes. People wore them as jewelry, believing they protected against evil and cured illnesses. Until the 18th century, India was the world’s main diamond source, with a small deposit found in Brazil in 1725.

When India’s supply dwindled, the search for new sources began. In 1867, a 15-year-old named Erasmus Jacobs found a shiny pebble along South Africa’s Orange River. It turned out to be a 12.25-carat diamond. Four years later, an 83.50-carat diamond was found at Colesberg Kopje. This sparked a rush of prospectors, leading to large-scale mining and the famous Kimberley Mine. [4]

The Final Frontier

Iconic First Black Hole Cygnus X-1 Reveals a Few Surprises

Outer space, often called the “final frontier,” continues to fascinate us. Astronomers have proposed amazing ideas, like planets forming from supernova explosions and theories about a Mirror Universe. Discoveries in space are equally mind-blowing, including an exoplanet called Super-Earth, ice volcanoes on distant moons, evidence of past tsunamis on Mars, water on our Moon, and the enigmatic black holes.

Albert Einstein predicted black holes in 1916 with his theory of general relativity. In 1964, astronomers spotted Cygnus X-1, a black hole 6,070 lightyears away. It took nearly 30 years for physicists Stephen Hawking and Kip Thorne to agree it was indeed a black hole. In February 2021, scientists found Cygnus X-1 to be even larger than previously thought. This discovery is making scientists rethink how stars lose mass and how stellar winds behave. [5]

Isolated Paradise

What Pre-American Hawaii Was Really Like

Hawaii, a chain of eight major islands including Kauai, Oahu, and Maui, is a dream destination known for its beauty and natural wonders like the Napali Coast. These islands are the most isolated landmass on Earth. Polynesians from the Marquesas Islands first settled Hawaii around AD 400, arriving in canoes.

For about 500 years, Hawaiian civilization developed in isolation. Then, in 1778, British explorer James Cook arrived, believed to be the first European to reach the islands. He named them the Sandwich Islands. Cook’s arrival brought immigration and diseases like smallpox, which devastated the native population. The Hawaiians initially awed Cook and his crew, perhaps seeing them as gods, which led to exploitation. However, when one of Cook’s crewmen died, the Hawaiians realized they were mortals. Cook left in February 1779 but had to return a week later. An angry crowd met his ship, and Cook was ultimately killed. [6]

A Destroyed Beacon

The Ancient Skyscraper: (Pharos) The Lighthouse of Alexandria (Part 1)

The Lighthouse of Alexandria, built during Ptolemy II’s reign on the island of Pharos in Egypt, was a marvel of the ancient world. It guided ships safely into Alexandria’s busy harbor. Sadly, a series of earthquakes between 956 and 1323 AD gradually destroyed this magnificent structure. For a long time, its appearance was known only from depictions on ancient coins.

These coins suggested a three-tiered tower, possibly topped with a huge statue of Alexander the Great or Ptolemy II. In 1480, the Sultan of Egypt used the lighthouse’s last remains to build a medieval fort on the site. In 1968, archaeologists found the lighthouse’s ruins underwater in the Mediterranean Sea. However, exploration was halted as it was a military zone. In 1994, photos of the ruins revealed columns, statues, obelisks, and sphinxes. Efforts are now ongoing to preserve this historic site. [7]

An Accidental Discovery

What Are the Dead Sea Scrolls?

In early 1947, Bedouin teenagers tending their goats and sheep near Qumran, by the Dead Sea, made an astonishing find. One boy threw a rock into a cliff opening and heard pottery shatter. Curious, they entered the cave and found several clay jars. Seven of these jars held leather and papyrus scrolls, later estimated to be around 2,000 years old.

This discovery, known as the Dead Sea Scrolls, sparked a frenzy of archaeological digs and treasure hunts. More scrolls and fragments were found, totaling about 900 manuscripts. In 1954, four of the original scrolls were advertised in the Wall Street Journal and bought by Israeli archaeologist Yigael Yadin. The authors of the scrolls remain unknown, though many believe they were written by a Jewish community in Qumran. One manuscript, the Copper Scroll, even lists hidden treasures, none of which have been found yet. [8]

Challenger Deep

Mariana Trench | In Pursuit of the Abyss

As of 2021, we’ve explored only about 5% of the world’s oceans. This means countless intriguing, perhaps even startling, discoveries still await us. The Mariana Trench is one of the ocean’s most fascinating and deepest points. Only a handful of people, including filmmaker James Cameron, have ever explored its depths.

The trench was first sounded in 1875 and named after the nearby Mariana Islands. The HMS Challenger expedition (1872-1876) discovered around 4,700 new species. Decades later, in 1960, Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh reached the trench’s deepest point, Challenger Deep, in a special deep-sea vessel. James Cameron was the first to capture photographs of this extreme environment. In 2009, the Mariana Trench was designated a U.S. national monument. Some still speculate that giant creatures, perhaps even a megalodon, might lurk in its dark waters. [9]

Eve’s Footprints

Eve's footprints in South Africa

In 1995, geologist David Roberts announced a stunning find: three fossilized footprints on the shore of Langebaan Lagoon in South Africa. These footprints were dated to about 117,000 years ago, making them the oldest known footprints of a modern human. The woman who left them, nicknamed “Eve,” would have lived around the time modern Homo sapiens first emerged.

Researchers later found evidence of stone tool use in the same area. A book about the discovery imagines Eve walking across dunes, perhaps in the rain, leaving deep prints in the wet sand. These prints were then covered by dry sand, and over millennia, hardened into stone, preserving them. Thousands of years later, erosion exposed these ancient tracks, leading to Roberts’s remarkable discovery. [10]

These ten discoveries, spanning ancient tombs to the deepest oceans and distant galaxies, remind us of the endless mysteries our world holds. Each story, whether of accidental finds or painstaking exploration, highlights humanity’s unceasing curiosity and the thrill of uncovering the unknown. The Earth and the cosmos still have many secrets to reveal, promising more amazing tales for generations to come.
