Artists often push boundaries, but brain-powered sperm? That’s a concept that truly stands out. Ani Lui, an artist and researcher at MIT, has turned this wild idea into reality using amazing technology. Lui is celebrated for her research-driven art that mixes science, culture, and new tech. One of her most talked-about works, ‘Mind-Controlled Spermatozoa,’ is an installation where she uses her own brain activity to control the movement of live human sperm.

How does it work? An EEG headpiece reads the electrical signals from her brain. These signals are then converted into digital pulses that change the electronic charge around a sample of live sperm. A fascinating and bizarre fact about human sperm is its tendency to change direction to align with the surrounding electromagnetic field. This reaction is called galvanotaxis, and it’s true for all mammal sperm. Lui’s art explores this unique property in a visually striking way.

And her artistic explorations don’t stop there. Another of her pieces, ‘Botany of Desire,’ involved plants bio-engineered to react to chemicals in her lipstick. By simply kissing them, Lui could make these plants bloom, showcasing another blend of art, science, and personal interaction.

9 Sperm Can Withstand Zero Gravity

Imagine a future where new planets are populated with the help of a space-traveling sperm bank. This sci-fi scenario might be closer than we think, thanks to a study on sperm in zero gravity. In 2019, researchers made a groundbreaking discovery: frozen human sperm samples can survive microgravity conditions – the kind of weightlessness astronauts experience in space.

For the study, scientists exposed sperm from ten healthy donors to microgravity using a special aerobatic aircraft that simulates space conditions. They found no significant differences in quality or motility between the samples exposed to microgravity and those kept under normal gravity on Earth. This suggests that establishing an off-world sperm bank could be a real possibility for future space colonization.

This isn’t the first time the idea of all-female space missions has surfaced. In 2017, British astronaut Helen Sharman mentioned an unreleased NASA document reportedly advising same-gender crews for long-haul missions. The thinking was that it might reduce interpersonal issues related to sexual dynamics, helping teams cooperate better on extended journeys through space.

8 Record-Breaking Ancient Sperm

"Scientists find the world’s oldest sperm fossil" (100-million-years old).

In 2020, the science world buzzed with news of an incredible find: 100-million-year-old sperm, the oldest ever discovered! Scientists from the Chinese Academy of Science unearthed these prehistoric reproductive cells perfectly preserved inside a piece of amber from northern Myanmar. This discovery offers a stunning glimpse into ancient life.

The sperm belonged to an ancient, previously unknown species of ostracod. Ostracods are tiny crustaceans, often called ‘seed shrimp,’ because they look a bit like shrimp enclosed in a clam-like shell. While most ostracods are tiny—around 2.54 millimeters (0.1 inches) long—their sperm can be astonishingly large, sometimes growing up to 11.8 millimeters (0.46 inches) in length.

The team found 39 ostracods in their amber sample, with most belonging to this newly identified species. Each tiny seed shrimp measured about 0.59 millimeters (0.02 inches). Inside one female ostracod, researcher He Wang found not only four eggs but also a coiled mass of protein – an ostracod sperm cell dating back to the Cretaceous period. This amazing find surpassed the previous record holder, a 50-million-year-old worm sperm found in Antarctica.

7 Big Sperm and the Semen Crisis

The Global Spermageddon | Explorer

We’ve all heard of Big Tech and Big Pharma. But what about ‘Big Sperm’? It might sound like a joke, but several startup companies believe they have the answers to a growing concern: falling sperm counts. Yes, there’s actual scientific evidence suggesting a global ‘semen crisis’.

A 2017 study revealed that sperm counts in men from North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand have plummeted by a staggering 59.3% since 1973. Scientists are still trying to figure out the exact reasons for this drastic decline. Furthermore, NHS statistics in Britain indicate that when couples face difficulties conceiving, issues with male fertility are a factor about 40% of the time.

This is where companies like ExSeed, Yo, Trak, and Legacy step in. These ambitious startups are offering high-tech solutions to tackle this trend of declining male fertility. Trak, for instance, provides services for sperm testing, sperm freezing, and even ‘sperm training.’ Greg Sommer, Trak’s chief science officer, notes, “In the past, men have mostly shrugged off fertility as a women’s issue. Today, men and women recognize the role that men play.”

6 The Driving Factor behind Supersized Animal Sperm

The Big Sperm Paradox

Sperm size varies dramatically across the animal kingdom. Consider the male parasitoid wasp: its sperm cells are less than one-thousandth of a centimeter long. In stark contrast, the fruit fly produces sperm with a tail that can reach 6 centimeters (2.3 inches) long – so enormous it has to coil up just to fit inside the tiny fly!

Why this huge difference? What makes some animals produce sperm over 20 times their own body length? Researchers from Stockholm University set out to find answers. They studied the reproductive cells of 3,200 different species and discovered a surprising pattern: sperm size seems to be strongly influenced by the length of the female’s reproductive tract.

Species where females have a shorter reproductive tract tend to have larger sperm. The logic is that a shallower tract means sperm don’t need to spread out as much to reach the egg, so bigger, more competitive sperm might have an advantage. Conversely, small sperm are common among external fertilizers, like fish and sea urchins. These creatures release their sex cells into the water, so males produce huge quantities of tiny sperm to increase the chances of some reaching the eggs.

5 Fotie Photenhauer, the Semen Chef

Believe it or not, semen is more nutritious than many people imagine. For adventurous foodies looking to experiment, chef Fotie Photenhauer offers a unique culinary guide. His 2008 cookbook, Natural Harvest: A Collection of Semen-Based Recipes, provides a selection of dishes featuring this unconventional ingredient.

The book’s description boldly claims, “Semen is not only nutritious, but it also has a wonderful texture and amazing cooking properties. Like fine wine and cheeses, the taste of semen is complex and dynamic.” It goes on to state that semen is inexpensive to produce and readily available in most homes and even some restaurants. The author hopes the book will help semen gain acceptance as a food ingredient.

The cookbook encourages readers to overcome any initial reluctance, promising that they’ll be “surprised to learn how wonderful semen is in the kitchen.” It positions semen as an exciting ingredient that can add an “interesting twist” to various dishes. If you’re curious about these sperm-filled culinary adventures, Photenhauer’s book is available online.

4 Sperm-Inspired Drug Delivery Robots

Rocket ship-like ‘micro-robots’ inspired by sperm can deliver drugs inside the human body

In 2018, British researchers unveiled a futuristic vision for delivering medicine: tiny, sperm-like robots. Scientists at the University of Exeter proposed developing miniature swimming drones, detailed in the journal Physics of Fluids. These bots would mimic sperm’s tadpole-like structure, featuring a magnetic head and a flexible, elastic tail.

The idea is that these microscopic robots could be deployed inside the human body. Guided by electromagnetic currents, they could navigate through blood vessels to deliver drugs directly to targeted areas, like tumors or specific organs. This targeted approach could make treatments more effective and reduce side effects on healthy tissues.

While the concept of sperm-inspired microrobots isn’t entirely new, the Exeter team claimed their design was the most cost-effective and efficient developed so far. They even created several prototypes to demonstrate, in theory, how their innovative drug delivery system would operate. This research opens doors to new possibilities in medical treatment.

3 Fertility Doctor Fathers 49 Children with Own Sperm

Dutch fertility doctor secretly used his sperm to father 49 children

A shocking case came to light in 2019 when DNA evidence confirmed that a Dutch fertility doctor, Jan Karbaat, had secretly used his own sperm to father at least 49 children. Karbaat abused his position of trust, deceiving numerous women who sought fertility treatment at his clinic near Rotterdam, primarily during the 1980s. His clinic was eventually closed in 2009 amid a storm of allegations.

Legal representatives noted “serious suspicions that Mr. Karbaat used his own sperm in the clinic.” The deception began to unravel when some of the children conceived through his clinic started questioning their true parentage. A court case was initiated in 2017. Karbaat passed away the same year at age 89, but authorities had managed to secure items from his home containing his DNA.

DNA tests were conducted in 2017, but legal procedures kept the results confidential for two years. Finally, in 2019, the donor-conceived children received official confirmation. One of the 49 children, known as Joey, expressed his relief at “finally close the chapter” on his parentage, stating, “After a search of 11 years, I can continue my life. I am glad that I finally have clarity.”

2 British Spies Used Semen as Invisible Ink

That Time MI6 Spymaster Captain MANsfield Cumming Ordered His Spies to Use Semen as Invisible Ink

Invisible ink is a classic tool of espionage, allowing spies to smuggle secret messages that only become readable when treated with a special chemical. This clever trick dates back to ancient Greek and Roman times. During World War I, Allied forces initially favored lemon juice as their invisible ink of choice.

However, lemon juice had its drawbacks. It could only be used on paper, required iodine to reveal the message, and crucially, enemy forces eventually caught on and began sniffing out letters with a tell-tale citrus scent. This compromised its effectiveness, leading to a search for a more reliable alternative. One of the most bizarre facts in espionage history is what they found next.

In 1915, MI6, Britain’s secret intelligence service, reportedly instructed its operatives to use semen as invisible ink. Mansfield Smith-Cumming, an early head of MI6, is said to have consulted experts at London University on this unusual matter. There were even stories of a spy in Copenhagen who kept a bottle of semen for this purpose, but this led to his letters having a very strong, unpleasant odor. Following this, Cumming apparently had to remind his agents that a “fresh operation was necessary for each letter.”

1 The Online Crypto Clamor over Unvaccinated Sperm

Anti-Vaxxers Trading 'Unvaxxed Sperm'?!

The period following the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020 has seen some truly strange developments. Among the more peculiar is the emergence of sperm-based cryptocurrency, a testament to the wild times we live in. In certain online communities, unvaccinated sperm has bizarrely become a sought-after commodity.

This peculiar trend stems from conspiracy theories alleging that COVID-19 vaccines harm fertility. Capitalizing on this belief, a group of tech enthusiasts launched a digital coin called ‘Unvaxxed Sperm’ in December 2021. They told Vice magazine their goal was to “ensure the continuity of objective scientific inquiry and the freedom of discourse.”

The idea gained surprising traction. At an anti-vaccine rally in Melbourne, Australia, one protester was even seen holding a sign declaring, “Unvaxxed sperm is the next Bitcoin.” The anonymous creators of this crypto are reportedly exploring other anti-vaccine ventures, such as a cryogenically frozen unvaccinated sperm project and an anti-vaccine dating app. Interestingly, the founders themselves seemed a bit unsure about their exact stance, with one developer stating they weren’t anti-vaccine, only to later clarify, “To a degree, I’d say we are anti-vaccine.”

From the microscopic world of cellular biology to the vastness of space, and from historical espionage to modern-day tech trends, sperm and semen continue to surprise and fascinate. These ten facts offer just a glimpse into their often-overlooked but incredibly diverse roles and perceptions. It’s clear that these tiny life-givers are much more than just a biological necessity; they’re a source of scientific wonder, artistic inspiration, and sometimes, downright bizarre headlines.
