Horror films are meant to be, well, horrific, right? But sometimes, the line between frightening and funny blurs. Filmmakers often go to great lengths to make their audiences take notice, striving to make the deaths in their horror films stand out. Some films take such delight in their over-the-top deaths that they become horror-comedies.
Either way, let’s explore ten horror movie demises so ridiculous they’re funny!
Killer Condom
When guests check into the Hotel Quickie, they usually have only one thing on their minds. Despite their desire for quick sex, they also want to make it safe. Unfortunately, in the German horror film “Killer Condom,” putting on a condom is one of the worst things you can do for your health.
A living condom with a painful-looking set of sharp teeth begins attacking the hotel’s horny tenants. Officer Luigi Mackeroni leads the hunt for the killer condom, but when he falls for a gigolo named Billy, he loses more than his heart. While the pair begin to make love, the killer condom manages to bite off Mackeroni’s right testicle.
Mackeroni survives the attack, but others are less fortunate when their penises are bitten off. The condoms don’t only attack men; one woman commits suicide by leaping into a pool of water teeming with toothy prophylactics.
Thrown CDs
The “Hellraiser” films follow people foolish enough to release the Cenobites from Hell. Cenobites are beings transformed by their perverted pleasures into demons that subject others to fiendish tortures.
In “Hellraiser 3,” Pinhead, the leader of the Cenobites, visits a nightclub, bringing all the creepy décor to life. He massacres the club’s patrons. One woman has her drink turn to ice, impaling her through the mouth. But the DJ gets the most ridiculously apt death.
CDs from his stack begin to levitate around his head before slicing into his skull, brain, and mouth. Pinhead transforms the DJ into a new Cenobite named CD, who joins the diabolical rampage, ejecting discs from his belly to kill a cab driver and a police officer.
Giant Rabbits
Rabbits aren’t usually threatening. Perhaps that’s why the studio changed the film’s title from “Rabbits” to “Night of the Lepus” before its release and omitted rabbits from promotional materials. But the villains are rabbits.
The movie begins with a rabbit being given a cocktail of hormones to control the rabbit population on a ranch. Instead, the rabbits mutate into huge, carnivorous monsters and attack the farm.
In one scene, dozens of normal-sized rabbits stampede through a model of a farm before a rabbit’s paw crashes through a window and slashes a woman’s throat.
Psychic Tyre
The 2010 movie “Rubber” focuses on Robert, a tyre that comes to life in the desert and begins killing. Unable to crush a glass bottle, he uses psychic powers to blow things up.
When Robert is run over by a truck, he makes the driver’s head explode. Soon, heads are popping all over the place, and the police track the tyre down. “Rubber” offers a meta-commentary on horror films by having an on-screen audience watching the events unfold.
Vending Machine
Stephen King is the master of modern horror, turning mundane things into creepy threats. However, “Maximum Overdrive,” written and directed by King, isn’t one of his best. When the Earth passes through a comet’s tail, machines become sentient and malevolent.
The most memorable murder involves a little league coach buying soda from a vending machine, which launches cans at him. One hits him in the groin, while another crushes his skull.
Stephen King has disowned this film and vowed never to direct again.
Eaten by Lions – The Happening
“The Happening” follows people mysteriously committing suicide. One scene shows a man walking into a lion enclosure at a zoo and reaching out his hand towards the lions, who then tear off his arms.
The gory attack could be frightening if it weren’t filmed with bad CGI.
Choke on ‘Em!
George Romero’s zombie films comment on society. “Day of the Dead” tells the story of the last humans after a zombie apocalypse. Captain Rhodes, leader of a military outpost, becomes frustrated with the scientists he protects.
When zombies penetrate the bunker, Rhodes spits defiance as they tear him apart, saying, “Choke on ‘em!”
Basket Ball
Wes Craven hoped “Deadly Friend” would be a sci-fi film. After test audiences wanted more gore, reshoots brought more blood to the screen. The story follows a genius who puts his robot’s mind into the body of his brain-dead love interest, turning her into a cyborg who goes on a killing spree.
The cyborg gets revenge on an elderly neighbor by throwing a basketball at her head, obliterating it.
Exploding Shark
“Jaws” made everyone afraid of the sea. Yet, “Jaws 4: The Revenge” has one of the most absurd shark explosions. When a great white shark attacks her family, Ellen Brody plans to shock it to death with electricity.
When the shocks make the shark jump out of the water, she drives the boat into it, causing it to explode. The scene looks like it was filmed with tiny models in a bathtub.
Oh My Gooooooodddd!
“Troll 2” is considered one of the worst films ever made. The plot revolves around vegetarian goblins who turn people into plants.
When the Goblin queen captures a girl and boy, she gives them broth to drink. The girl dissolves into goo, while Arnold stares helplessly. Arnold’s delivery of “Oh my God!” has become a meme. When a friend tries to rescue Arnold from being turned into a tree, the goblin queen returns and chainsaws him up, promising it will only tickle.
From killer condoms to exploding sharks, these horror movie deaths remind us that sometimes, the scariest thing is how ridiculous a film can be!
